A relação entre adoração e ética fica evidente em Provérbios 21:3: Fazer justiça e juízo é mais aceitável a Jeová do que oferecer-lhe sacrifícios (v. 3). Este versículo se insere em uma longa lista de passagens do Antigo Testamento que subordinam o ritual à obediência ética.
Samuel disse a Saul: Eis que o obedecer é melhor do que o sacrifício, e o atender, do que a gordura de carneiros (1 Samuel 15:22). Oseias escreveu: Pois misericórdia quero e não sacrifício; e o conhecimento de Deus, mais do que holocaustos (Oseias 6:6). Isaías registrou o cansaço do Senhor diante das ofertas multiplicadas de um povo cujas mãos estavam cheias de sangue derramado (Isaías 1:11-17). Salomão resume a mesma verdade em um provérbio: Deus prefere uma vida justa a uma performance religiosa.
O sacrifício não é abolido aqui; ele é colocado em seu devido lugar. A adoração importa, mas o louvor oferecido por mãos e lábios que praticam a injustiça não é o que Deus procura.
