O orgulho é mencionado em dois níveis em Provérbios 21:4: O olhar altivo e o coração soberbo, esta lâmpada dos perversos, é pecado (v. 4). O versículo menciona duas faces do orgulho: os olhos altivos (o que os outros veem) e o coração orgulhoso (o que Deus vê).
A expressão lâmpada dos perversos é impactante. A imagem da lâmpada em Provérbios geralmente significa vida, prosperidade ou orientação (Provérbios 13:9; 20:20; 20:27). Aqui, Salomão diz que aquilo que parece ser a lâmpada do perverso, aquilo que ele acredita iluminar seu caminho e lhe trazer sucesso é, na verdade, o seu pecado.
Ele está se guiando por uma chama que o trairá. A luz em que confia é justamente o que o conduz à escuridão.
