Uma advertência econômica sóbria surge em Provérbios 21:6: A aquisição de tesouros por meio de uma língua mentirosa é uma vaidade fugitiva; os que os buscam buscam a morte (v. 6). A palavra hebraica traduzida como vaidade fugitiva é hebel, a mesma palavra que Eclesiastes usa trinta e oito vezes para descrever a natureza fugaz e efêmera da vida debaixo do sol.
O que se ganha com mentiras tem a substância de um sopro no ar frio, você consegue ver por um instante e depois não consegue mais. Pior ainda, o que parece ser uma busca por tesouros é, na verdade, a busca pela morte. O homem pensa que está perseguindo riquezas; na realidade, está perseguindo a própria destruição.
O versículo se recusa a romantizar a desonestidade bem-sucedida.
