Døving emigrated to America in 1890, graduated from Luther Seminary in 1896, and from Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, in 1903. He served as pastor in Lutheran churches in Red Wing and Montevideo, Minnesota, and Brooklyn, New York. He is best known as a translator of German and Scandinavian hymns; over 30 of his translations appear in the 1913 Lutheran Hymnary.
