Born: September 28, 1824, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England.

Died: October 24, 1897.

Francis Turner Palgrave (1824-1897)

Palgrave was educated at the Charterhouse (1838-1843) and at Oxford, where he graduated in first class Classical Honors. He was a scholar of Balliol (1842) and Fellow of Exeter (1846). He worked in the Education Department of the Privy Council until 1884, being also Private Secretary to Lord Granville (then Lord President). In 1885, he was elected Professor of Poetry at Oxford. His works include:

  • Idylls and Songs, 1854
  • Golden Treasury of English Lyrics (editor), 1861
  • Art Catalogue of the Great Exhibition, 1862
  • Essays on Art, 1866
  • Sir Walter Scott’s Poems, with Life (editor), 1867
  • Hymns (1st edition, 1867; 2nd edition, 1870)
  • Lyrical Poems, 1871
  • Chrysomela, a selection from Herrick, 1877
