Overcoming the World

1 Everyone ^G3956 who believes ^G4100 that Jesus ^G2424 is the [fn]Christ ^G5547 has been [fn]born ^G1080 of God ^G2316, and everyone ^G3956 who loves ^G25 the [fn]One who gives new birth ^G1080 loves ^G25 also ^G2532 the one who has been [fn]born ^G1080 of Him.

2 By this ^G3778 we know ^G1097 that we love ^G25 the children ^G5043 of God ^G2316, when ^G3752 we love ^G25 God ^G2316 and do ^G4160 His commandments ^G1785. 3 For this ^G3778 is the love ^G26 of God ^G2316, that we keep ^G5083 His commandments ^G1785; and His commandments ^G1785 are not burdensome ^G926. 4 For everything ^G3956 that has been [fn]born ^G1080 of God ^G2316 overcomes ^G3528 the world ^G2889; and this ^G3778 is the overcoming ^G3529 that has overcome ^G3528 the world ^G2889—our faith ^G4102.

5 Who ^G5101 is the one who overcomes ^G3528 the world ^G2889, but he who believes ^G4100 that Jesus ^G2424 is the Son ^G5207 of God ^G2316? 6 This ^G3778 is the One who came ^G2064 by water ^G5204 and blood ^G129, Jesus ^G2424 Christ ^G5547; not [fn]with the water ^G5204 only ^G3440, but [fn]with the water ^G5204 and [fn]with the blood ^G129. It is the Spirit ^G4151 who bears ^G3140 witness ^G3140, because ^G3754 the Spirit ^G4151 is the truth ^G225. 7 For there ^G1510 are three ^G5140 that bear ^G3140 witness ^G3140: 8 [fn]the Spirit ^G4151 and the water ^G5204 and the blood ^G129; and the three ^G5140 are [fn]in agreement ^G1520. 9 If ^G1487 we receive ^G2983 the witness ^G3141 of men ^G444, the witness ^G3141 of God ^G2316 is greater ^G3173; for the witness ^G3141 of God ^G2316 is this ^G3778, that He has borne ^G3140 witness ^G3140 about ^G4012 His Son ^G5207. 10 The one who believes ^G4100 in the Son ^G5207 of God ^G2316 has ^G2192 this witness ^G3141 in himself ^G846. The one who does not believe ^G4100 God ^G2316 has made ^G4160 Him a liar ^G5583, because ^G3754 he has not believed ^G4100 in the witness ^G3141 which God ^G2316 has borne ^G3140 witness ^G3140 about ^G4012 His Son ^G5207. 11 And the witness ^G3141 is this ^G3778, that God ^G2316 gave ^G1325 us eternal ^G166 life ^G2222, and this ^G3778 life ^G2222 is in His Son ^G5207. 12 He who has ^G2192 the Son ^G5207 has ^G2192 the life ^G2222; he who does not have ^G2192 the Son ^G5207 of God ^G2316 does not have ^G2192 that life ^G2222.

That You May Know

13 These ^G3778 things ^G3778 I have written ^G1125 to you who believe ^G4100 in the name ^G3686 of the Son ^G5207 of God ^G2316, so ^G2443 that you may know ^G6063 that you have ^G2192 eternal ^G166 life ^G2222.

14 And this ^G3778 is the confidence ^G3954 which ^G3739 we have ^G2192 [fn]before ^G4314 Him, that, if ^G1437 we ask ^G154 anything ^G5100 according ^G2596 to His will ^G2307, He hears ^G191 us. 15 And if ^G1437 we know ^G6063 that He hears ^G191 us in whatever ^G3739 G1437 we ask ^G154, we know ^G6063 that we have ^G2192 the requests ^G155 which ^G3739 we have asked ^G154 from Him.

16 If ^G1437 anyone ^G5100 sees ^G3708 his brother ^G80 [fn]committing ^G264 a sin ^G266 not leading to death ^G2288, he shall ask ^G154 and [fn]God will for him give ^G1325 life ^G2222 to those ^G3588 who commit ^G264 sin ^G264 not leading to death ^G2288. There is a sin ^G266 leading to death ^G2288; I do not say ^G3004 that he should make ^G2065 request ^G2065 for this ^G1565. 17 All ^G3956 unrighteousness ^G93 is sin ^G266, and there is a sin ^G266 not leading to death ^G2288.

18 We know ^G6063 that no ^G3956 G3756 one ^G3956 who has been [fn]born ^G1080 of God ^G2316 sins ^G264; but He who was [fn]begotten ^G1080 of God ^G2316 keeps ^G5083 him, and the evil ^G4190 one ^G4190 does not touch ^G681 him. 19 We know ^G6063 that we are of God ^G2316, and that the whole ^G3650 world ^G2889 lies ^G2749 in the power of the evil ^G4190 one ^G4190. 20 And we know ^G6063 that the Son ^G5207 of God ^G2316 has ^G2240 come ^G2240, and has given ^G1325 us understanding ^G1271 so ^G2443 that we may know ^G1097 Him who ^G3558 is true ^G228; and we are in Him who ^G3558 is true ^G228, in His Son ^G5207 Jesus ^G2424 Christ ^G5547. This ^G3778 is the true ^G228 God ^G2316 and eternal ^G166 life ^G2222.

21 Little ^G5040 children ^G5040, guard ^G5442 yourselves ^G1438 from idols ^G1497.
