The Altar Shall Be Torn Apart

1 Now behold ^H2009, there came ^H935 a man ^H376 of God ^H430 from Judah ^H3063 to Bethel ^H1008 by the word ^H1697 of Yahweh ^H3068, while Jeroboam ^H3379 was standing ^H5975 by the altar ^H4196 to burn ^H6999 incense ^H6999.

2 And he cried ^H7121 against ^H5921 the altar ^H4196 by the word ^H1697 of Yahweh ^H3068, and said ^H559, “O altar ^H4196, altar ^H4196, thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068, ‘Behold ^H2009, a son ^H1121 shall be born ^H3205 to the house ^H1004 of David ^H1732, Josiah ^H2977 is his name ^H8034; and on you he shall sacrifice ^H2076 the priests ^H3548 of the high ^H1116 places ^H1116 who burn ^H6999 incense ^H6999 on you, and human ^H120 bones ^H6106 shall be burned ^H8313 on you.’” 3 Then he gave ^H5414 a miraculous ^H4159 sign ^H4159 the same ^H1931 day ^H3117, saying ^H559, “This ^H2088 is the miraculous ^H4159 sign ^H4159 which ^H834 Yahweh ^H3068 has spoken ^H1696, ‘Behold ^H2009, the altar ^H4196 shall be torn ^H7167 apart ^H7167 and the [fn]ashes ^H1880 which ^H834 are on it shall be poured ^H8210 out ^H8210.’” 4 Now it happened that when the king ^H4428 heard ^H8085 the word ^H1697 of the man ^H376 of God ^H430, which ^H834 he cried ^H7121 against ^H5921 the altar ^H4196 in Bethel ^H1008, Jeroboam ^H3379 stretched ^H7971 out ^H7971 his hand ^H3027 from the altar ^H4196, saying ^H559, “Seize ^H8610 him.” But his hand ^H3027 which ^H834 he stretched ^H7971 out ^H7971 against ^H5921 him dried ^H3001 up ^H3001, so that he could ^H3201 not draw ^H7725 it back ^H7725 to himself. 5 The altar ^H4196 also was torn ^H7167 apart ^H7167 and the [fn]ashes ^H1880 were poured ^H8210 out from the altar ^H4196, according to the miraculous ^H4159 sign ^H4159 which ^H834 the man ^H376 of God ^H430 had given ^H5414 by the word ^H1697 of Yahweh ^H3068. 6 Then the king ^H4428 answered ^H6030 and said ^H559 to the man ^H376 of God ^H430, “Please ^H4994 [fn]entreat ^H2470 Yahweh ^H3068 your God ^H430, and pray ^H6419 for me, that my hand ^H3027 may be restored ^H7725 to me.” So the man ^H376 of God ^H430 [fn]entreated ^H2470 Yahweh ^H3068, and the king’s ^H4428 hand ^H3027 was restored ^H7725 to him, and it became ^H1961 as it was before ^H7223. 7 Then the king ^H4428 said ^H1696 to the man ^H376 of God ^H430, “Come ^H935 home ^H1004 with me and refresh ^H5582 yourself, and I will give ^H5414 you a gift ^H4991.” 8 But the man ^H376 of God ^H430 said ^H559 to the king ^H4428, “If ^H518 you were to give ^H5414 me half ^H2677 your house ^H1004, I would not go ^H935 with you, nor ^H3808 would I eat ^H398 bread ^H3899 or drink ^H8354 water ^H4325 in this ^H2088 place ^H4725. 9 For so ^H3651 [fn]it was commanded ^H6680 me by the word ^H1697 of Yahweh ^H3068, saying ^H559, ‘You shall eat ^H398 no ^H3808 bread ^H3899, nor ^H3808 drink ^H8354 water ^H4325, nor ^H3808 return ^H7725 by the way ^H1870 which ^H834 you came ^H1980.’” 10 So he went ^H1980 another ^H312 way ^H1870 and did not return ^H7725 by the way ^H1870 which ^H834 he came ^H935 to Bethel ^H1008.

The Prophet Rebels Against Yahweh

11 Now an old ^H2205 prophet ^H5030 was living ^H3427 in Bethel ^H1008; and his [fn]sons ^H1121 came ^H935 and recounted ^H5608 to him all ^H3605 the work ^H4639 which ^H834 the man ^H376 of God ^H430 had done ^H6213 that day ^H3117 in Bethel ^H1008; the words ^H1697 which ^H834 he had spoken ^H1696 to the king ^H4428, these also they recounted ^H5608 to their father ^H1.

12 And their father ^H1 said ^H1696 to them, “[fn]Which ^H335 H2088 way ^H1870 did he go ^H1980?” And his sons ^H1121 [fn]had seen ^H7200 the way ^H1870 which ^H834 the man ^H376 of God ^H430 who ^H834 came ^H935 from Judah ^H3063 had gone ^H1980. 13 Then he said ^H559 to his sons ^H1121, “Saddle ^H2280 the donkey ^H2543 for me.” So they saddled ^H2280 the donkey ^H2543 for him and he rode ^H7392 away on it. 14 So he went ^H1980 after ^H310 the man ^H376 of God ^H430 and found ^H4672 him sitting ^H3427 under ^H8478 [fn]an oak ^H424; and he said ^H559 to him, “Are you the man ^H376 of God ^H430 who ^H834 came ^H935 from Judah ^H3063?” And he said ^H559, “I am.” 15 Then he said ^H559 to him, “Come ^H1980 home ^H1004 with me and eat ^H398 bread ^H3899.” 16 And he said ^H559, “I cannot ^H3201 H3808 return ^H7725 with you, nor ^H3808 go ^H935 with you, nor ^H3808 will I eat ^H398 bread ^H3899 or drink ^H8354 water ^H4325 with you in this ^H2088 place ^H4725. 17 For a word ^H1697 came to me by the word ^H1697 of Yahweh ^H3068, ‘You shall eat ^H398 no ^H3808 bread ^H3899, nor ^H3808 drink ^H8354 water ^H4325 there ^H8033; do not return ^H7725 by going ^H1980 the way ^H1870 which ^H834 you came ^H1980.’” 18 And he said ^H559 to him, “I also ^H1571 am a prophet ^H5030 like ^H3644 you, and an angel ^H4397 spoke ^H1696 to me by the word ^H1697 of Yahweh ^H3068, saying ^H559, ‘Bring ^H7725 him back ^H7725 with you to your house ^H1004, that he may eat ^H398 bread ^H3899 and drink ^H8354 water ^H4325.’” But he dealt ^H3584 falsely ^H3584 with him. 19 So he went ^H7725 back ^H7725 with him, and ate ^H398 bread ^H3899 in his house ^H1004 and drank ^H8354 water ^H4325.

20 Now it happened ^H1961 as they were sitting ^H3427 down ^H3427 at the table ^H7979, that the word ^H1697 of Yahweh ^H3068 came ^H1961 to the prophet ^H5030 who ^H834 had brought ^H7725 him back ^H7725; 21 and he called ^H7121 out ^H7121 to the man ^H376 of God ^H430 who ^H834 came ^H935 from Judah ^H3063, saying ^H559, “Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068, ‘Because ^H3282 H3588 you have rebelled ^H4784 against the [fn]word ^H6310 of Yahweh ^H3068, and have not kept ^H8104 the commandment ^H4687 which ^H834 Yahweh ^H3068 your God ^H430 commanded ^H6680 you, 22 but have returned ^H7725 and eaten ^H398 bread ^H3899 and drunk ^H8354 water ^H4325 in the place ^H4725 of which ^H834 He said ^H1696 to you, “Eat ^H398 no ^H408 bread ^H3899 and drink ^H8354 no ^H408 water ^H4325”; your body ^H5038 shall not come ^H935 to the grave ^H6913 of your fathers ^H1.’” 23 Now it happened ^H1961 after ^H310 he had eaten ^H398 bread ^H3899 and after ^H310 he had drunk ^H8354, that he saddled ^H2280 the donkey ^H2543 for him, for the prophet ^H5030 whom ^H834 he had brought ^H7725 back ^H7725. 24 Then he went ^H1980 and on the way ^H1870 a lion ^H738 met ^H4672 him and put ^H4191 him to ^H4191 death ^H4191, and his body ^H5038 was thrown ^H7993 on the road ^H1870, with the donkey ^H2543 standing ^H5975 beside ^H681 it; the lion ^H738 also was standing ^H5975 beside ^H681 the body ^H5038. 25 And behold ^H2009, men ^H376 passed ^H5674 by ^H5674 and saw ^H7200 the body ^H5038 thrown ^H7993 on the road ^H1870, and the lion ^H738 standing ^H5975 beside ^H681 the body ^H5038; so they came ^H935 and spoke ^H1696 about it in the city ^H5892 where ^H834 the old ^H2205 prophet ^H5030 lived ^H3427.

26 Then the prophet ^H5030, who ^H834 brought ^H7725 him back ^H7725 from the way ^H1870, heard ^H8085 it and said ^H559, “It is the man ^H376 of God ^H430, who ^H834 rebelled ^H4784 against the [fn]command ^H6310 of Yahweh ^H3068; therefore Yahweh ^H3068 has given ^H5414 him to the lion ^H738, which has mauled ^H7665 him and put ^H4191 him to ^H4191 death ^H4191, according to the word ^H1697 of Yahweh ^H3068 which ^H834 He spoke ^H1696 to him.” 27 Then he spoke ^H1696 to his sons ^H1121, saying ^H559, “Saddle ^H2280 the donkey ^H2543 for me.” And they saddled ^H2280 it. 28 And he went ^H1980 and found ^H4672 his body ^H5038 thrown ^H7993 on the road ^H1870 with the donkey ^H2543 and the lion ^H738 standing ^H5975 beside ^H681 the body ^H5038; the lion ^H738 had not eaten ^H398 the body ^H5038 nor ^H3808 mauled ^H7665 the donkey ^H2543. 29 So the prophet ^H5030 took ^H5375 up ^H5375 the body ^H5038 of the man ^H376 of God ^H430 and laid ^H5117 it on the donkey ^H2543 and brought ^H7725 it back ^H7725, and he came ^H935 to the city ^H5892 of the old ^H2205 prophet ^H5030 to mourn ^H5594 and to bury ^H6912 him. 30 He laid ^H5117 his body ^H5038 in his own grave ^H6913, and they mourned ^H5594 over ^H5921 him, saying, “Alas ^H1945, my brother ^H251!” 31 Now it happened after ^H310 he had buried ^H6912 him, that he spoke ^H559 to his sons ^H1121, saying ^H559, “When I die ^H4191, you shall bury ^H6912 me in the grave ^H6913 in which ^H834 the man ^H376 of God ^H430 is buried ^H6912; lay ^H5117 my bones ^H6106 beside ^H681 his bones ^H6106. 32 For the word ^H1697 shall surely ^H1961 happen ^H1961 which ^H834 he cried ^H7121 by the word ^H1697 of Yahweh ^H3068 against ^H5921 the altar ^H4196 in Bethel ^H1008 and against ^H5921 all ^H3605 the houses ^H1004 of the high ^H1116 places ^H1116 which ^H834 are in the cities ^H5892 of Samaria ^H8111.”

33 After ^H310 this ^H2088 event ^H1697 Jeroboam ^H3379 did not return ^H7725 from his evil ^H7451 way ^H1870, but he returned ^H7725 and made ^H6213 priests ^H3548 of the high ^H1116 places ^H1116 from among [fn]all ^H7098 the people ^H5971; any who delighted ^H2655 to be so, he ordained ^H4390 H3027. So [fn]they became priests ^H3548 of the high ^H1116 places ^H1116. 34 [fn]And this ^H2088 event ^H1697 became ^H1961 sin ^H2403 to the house ^H1004 of Jeroboam ^H3379, even to blot ^H3582 it out ^H3582 and destroy ^H8045 it from off ^H5921 the face ^H6440 of the earth ^H127.
