Hannah’s Song of Thanksgiving

1 Then Hannah ^H2584 prayed ^H6419 and said ^H559,

“My heart ^H3820 exults ^H5970 in Yahweh ^H3068;

My [fn]horn ^H7161 is exalted ^H7311 in Yahweh ^H3068;

My mouth ^H6310 [fn]speaks ^H7337 boldly ^H7337 against ^H5921 my enemies ^H340,

Because ^H3588 I am glad ^H8055 in Your salvation ^H3444.

2 “There ^H369 is ^H369 no ^H369 one ^H369 holy ^H6918 like Yahweh ^H3068;

Indeed ^H3588, there ^H369 is ^H369 no ^H369 one ^H369 besides ^H1115 You,

Nor ^H369 is ^H369 there ^H369 any rock ^H6697 like our God ^H430.

3 “Do not ^H408 multiply ^H7235 speaking ^H1696 so very ^H1364 proudly ^H1364;

Let arrogance ^H6277 not come ^H3318 out ^H3318 of your mouth ^H6310;

For Yahweh ^H3068 is a God ^H410 of knowledge ^H1844,

And with Him actions ^H5949 are weighed ^H8505.

4 “The bows ^H7198 of the mighty ^H1368 are shattered ^H2844,

But those who stumble ^H3782 gird ^H247 on ^H247 strength ^H2428.

5 “Those who were full ^H7649 hire ^H7936 themselves out ^H7936 for bread ^H3899,

But those who were hungry ^H7457 cease ^H2308 to hunger.

Even ^H5704 the barren ^H6135 gives ^H3205 birth ^H3205 to seven ^H7651,

But she who has many ^H7227 children ^H1121 languishes ^H535.

6 “Yahweh ^H3068 puts ^H4191 to death ^H4191 and makes ^H2421 alive ^H2421;

He brings ^H3381 down ^H3381 to Sheol ^H7585 and raises ^H5927 up ^H5927.

7 “Yahweh ^H3068 makes ^H3423 poor ^H3423 and rich ^H6238;

He brings ^H8213 low ^H8213; He also ^H637 exalts ^H7311.

8 “He raises ^H6965 the poor ^H1800 from the dust ^H6083;

He exalts ^H7311 the needy ^H34 from the ash ^H830 heap ^H6083

To make them sit ^H3427 with nobles ^H5081,

And inherit ^H5157 a seat ^H3678 of glory ^H3519;

For the pillars ^H4690 of the earth ^H776 are Yahweh’s ^H3068,

And He set ^H7896 the world ^H8398 on them.

9 “He keeps ^H8104 the feet ^H7272 of His holy ^H2623 ones ^H2623,

But the wicked ^H7563 ones ^H7563 are ^H1826 silenced ^H1826 in darkness ^H2822,

For not by power ^H3581 shall a man ^H376 prevail ^H1396.

10 “Those who contend ^H7378 with Yahweh ^H3068 will be dismayed ^H2865;

Against ^H5921 them He will thunder ^H7481 in the heavens ^H8064;

Yahweh ^H3068 will render ^H1777 justice ^H1777 to the ends ^H657 of the earth ^H776,

And He will give ^H5414 strength ^H5797 to His king ^H4428,

And He will exalt ^H7311 the [fn]horn ^H7161 of His anointed ^H4899.”

11 Then Elkanah ^H511 went ^H1980 to his home ^H1004 at Ramah ^H7414. But the young ^H5288 boy ^H5288 ministered ^H8334 to Yahweh ^H3068 before ^H6440 Eli ^H5941 the priest ^H3548.

The Sin of Eli’s Sons

12 Now the sons ^H1121 of Eli ^H5941 were [fn]vile ^H1100 men ^H1121; they did not know ^H3045 Yahweh ^H3068.

13 And this was the legal judgment ^H4941 for the priests ^H3548 with the people ^H5971: when any ^H3605 man ^H376 was offering ^H2076 a sacrifice ^H2077, the priest’s ^H3548 young ^H5288 man ^H5288 would come ^H935 while the meat ^H1320 was boiling ^H1310, with a three-pronged ^H7969 H8127 fork ^H4207 in his hand ^H3027. 14 Then he would thrust ^H5221 it into the pan ^H3595 or ^H176 kettle ^H1731 or ^H176 caldron ^H7037 or ^H176 pot ^H6517; all ^H3605 that the fork ^H4207 would bring ^H5927 up ^H5927 the priest ^H3548 would take ^H3947 for himself. Thus ^H3602 they would do ^H6213 in Shiloh ^H7887 to all ^H3605 the Israelites ^H3478 who came ^H935 there ^H8033. 15 Also ^H1571, before ^H2962 they offered ^H6999 up ^H6999 the fat ^H2459 in ^H6999 smoke ^H6999, the priest’s ^H3548 young ^H5288 man ^H5288 would come ^H935 and say ^H559 to the man ^H376 who was sacrificing ^H2076, “Give ^H5414 the priest ^H3548 meat ^H1320 for roasting ^H6740; he will not take ^H3947 boiled ^H1310 meat ^H1320 from you, only ^H3588 H518 raw ^H2416.” 16 Then the man ^H376 would say ^H559 to him, “They must surely ^H6999 offer ^H6999 up ^H6999 the fat ^H2459 in ^H6999 smoke ^H6999 [fn]first ^H3117, and then take ^H3947 as much ^H834 as your soul ^H5315 desires ^H183,” then he would say ^H559, “No ^H3808, you shall give ^H5414 it now ^H6258; and if ^H518 not, I will take ^H3947 it by force ^H2394.” 17 Thus the sin ^H2403 of the young ^H5288 men ^H5288 was very ^H3966 great ^H1419 before ^H6440 Yahweh ^H3068, for the men ^H376 spurned ^H5006 the offering ^H4503 of Yahweh ^H3068.

Samuel Before Yahweh as a Boy

18 Now Samuel ^H8050 was ministering ^H8334 before ^H6440 Yahweh ^H3068, as a [fn]young ^H5288 boy ^H5288 girded ^H2296 with a linen ^H906 ephod ^H646.

19 And his mother ^H517 would make ^H6213 him a little ^H6996 robe ^H4598 and bring ^H5927 it to him from year ^H3117 to year ^H3117 when she would come ^H5927 up ^H5927 with her husband ^H376 to offer ^H2076 the yearly ^H3117 sacrifice ^H2077. 20 Then Eli ^H5941 would bless ^H1288 Elkanah ^H511 and his wife ^H802 and say ^H559, “May Yahweh ^H3068 establish ^H7760 for you a seed ^H2233 from this ^H2088 woman ^H802 in ^H8478 place ^H8478 of ^H8478 [fn]the one ^H7596 she dedicated ^H7596 H7592 to Yahweh ^H3068.” And they went ^H1980 to their own [fn]home ^H4725.

21 Yahweh ^H3068 indeed visited ^H6485 Hannah ^H2584; and she conceived ^H2029 and gave ^H3205 birth ^H3205 to three ^H7969 sons ^H1121 and two ^H8147 daughters ^H1323. And the young ^H5288 boy ^H5288 Samuel ^H8050 grew ^H1431 before ^H5973 Yahweh ^H3068.

Eli Hears About His Sons’ Evils

22 Now Eli ^H5941 was ^H2204 very ^H3966 old ^H2204; and he heard ^H8085 all ^H3605 that his sons ^H1121 were doing ^H6213 to all ^H3605 Israel ^H3478, and how ^H854 H834 they lay ^H7901 with the women ^H802 who served ^H6633 at the doorway ^H6607 of the tent ^H168 of meeting ^H4150.

23 So he said ^H559 to them, “Why ^H4100 do you do ^H6213 such ^H428 things ^H1697, the evil ^H7451 things ^H1697 that I hear ^H8085 from all ^H3605 these ^H428 people ^H5971? 24 No ^H408, my sons ^H1121; for the report ^H8052 is not good ^H2896 which ^H834 I hear ^H8085 the people ^H5971 of Yahweh ^H3068 [fn]passing ^H5674 about ^H5674. 25 If ^H518 one man ^H376 sins ^H2398 against another ^H376, God ^H430 will mediate ^H6419 for him; but if ^H518 a man ^H376 sins ^H2398 against Yahweh ^H3068, who ^H4310 can pray ^H6419 for him?” But they would not listen ^H8085 to the voice ^H6963 of their father ^H1, for Yahweh ^H3068 desired ^H2654 to put ^H4191 them to ^H4191 death ^H4191.

26 Now the young ^H5288 boy ^H5288 Samuel ^H8050 [fn]was growing ^H1980 H1432 in stature ^H1432 and in favor ^H2896 both ^H1571 with Yahweh ^H3068 and with men ^H376.

Eli Honors His Sons Above Yahweh

27 Then a man ^H376 of God ^H430 came ^H935 to Eli ^H5941 and said ^H559 to him, “Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068, ‘Did I not indeed ^H1540 reveal ^H1540 Myself to the house ^H1004 of your father ^H1 when they were in Egypt ^H4714, enslaved to Pharaoh’s ^H6547 house ^H1004?

28 And did I not choose ^H977 them from all ^H3605 the tribes ^H7626 of Israel ^H3478 to be My priests ^H3548, to go ^H5927 up ^H5927 to My altar ^H4196, to burn ^H6999 incense ^H7004, to carry ^H5375 an ephod ^H646 before ^H6440 Me; and did I not give ^H5414 to the house ^H1004 of your father ^H1 all ^H3605 the fire ^H801 offerings of the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478? 29 Why ^H4100 do you kick ^H1163 at My sacrifice ^H2077 and at My offering ^H4503 which ^H834 I have commanded ^H6680 in My habitation ^H4583, and honor ^H3513 your sons ^H1121 above ^H4480 Me, by making ^H1254 yourselves fat ^H1254 with the [fn]choicest ^H7225 of every ^H3605 offering ^H4503 of My people ^H5971 Israel ^H3478?’ 30 Therefore ^H3651 Yahweh ^H3068, the God ^H430 of Israel ^H3478, declares ^H5002, ‘I did indeed ^H559 say ^H559 that your house ^H1004 and the house ^H1004 of your father ^H1 should walk ^H1980 before ^H6440 Me forever ^H5704 H5769’; but now ^H6258 Yahweh ^H3068 declares ^H5002, ‘Far ^H2486 be it from Me—for those who honor ^H3513 Me I will honor ^H3513, and those who despise ^H959 Me will be ^H7043 cursed ^H7043. 31 Behold ^H2009, the days ^H3117 are coming ^H935, and I will break ^H1438 your [fn]strength ^H2220 and the [fn]strength ^H2220 of your father’s ^H1 house ^H1004 so ^H4480 that ^H4480 there will not ^H4480 be an old ^H2205 man ^H2205 in your house ^H1004. 32 And you will look ^H5027 upon the distress ^H6862 of My habitation ^H4583, in spite of all ^H3605 the good ^H3190 that [fn]I do ^H3190 for Israel ^H3478; and an old ^H2205 man ^H2205 will not be in your house ^H1004 all ^H3605 the days ^H3117. 33 Yet I will not cut ^H3772 off ^H3772 every ^H376 man ^H376 of yours from My altar ^H4196 [fn]so that your eyes ^H5869 will fail ^H3615 from weeping and your soul ^H5315 grieve ^H109, and all ^H3605 the increase ^H4768 of your house ^H1004 will be put ^H4191 to ^H4191 death ^H4191 [fn]in the prime ^H376 of life ^H376. 34 Now this ^H2088 will be the sign ^H226 to you which ^H834 will come ^H935 concerning ^H413 your two ^H8147 sons ^H1121, Hophni ^H2652 and Phinehas ^H6372: on the same ^H259 day ^H3117 both ^H8147 of them will be put ^H4191 to ^H4191 death ^H4191. 35 But I will raise ^H6965 up ^H6965 for Myself a faithful ^H539 priest ^H3548 who will do ^H6213 according to what ^H834 is in My heart ^H3824 and in My soul ^H5315; and I will build ^H1129 him a faithful ^H539 house ^H1004, and he will walk ^H1980 before ^H6440 My anointed ^H4899 always ^H3605 H3117. 36 And it will be ^H1961 that everyone ^H3605 who is left ^H3498 in your house ^H1004 will come ^H935 and bow ^H2331 down ^H2331 to him for a [fn]piece ^H95 of silver ^H3701 or a loaf ^H3603 of bread ^H3899 and say ^H559, “Please ^H4994 [fn]assign ^H5596 me to one ^H259 of the priest’s ^H3550 offices ^H3550 so that I may eat ^H398 a piece ^H6595 of bread ^H3899.”’”
