Sennacherib Invades Judah

1 After ^H310 these ^H428 [fn]acts ^H1697 of faithfulness ^H571 Sennacherib ^H5576 king ^H4428 of Assyria ^H804 came ^H935 and invaded ^H935 Judah ^H3063 and encamped ^H2583 H5921 against the fortified ^H1219 cities ^H5892, and [fn]thought ^H559 to break ^H1234 into them for himself.

2 Then Hezekiah ^H2396 saw ^H7200 that Sennacherib ^H5576 had come ^H935 and that he had set his face ^H6440 to make war ^H4421 on Jerusalem ^H3389, 3 and he took ^H3289 counsel ^H3289 with his commanders ^H8269 and his warriors ^H1368 to stop ^H5640 up ^H5640 the supply of water ^H4325 from the springs ^H5869 which ^H834 were outside ^H4480 H2351 the city ^H5892, and they helped ^H5826 him. 4 So many ^H7227 people ^H5971 gathered ^H6908 and stopped ^H5640 up ^H5640 all ^H3605 the springs ^H4599 and the stream ^H5158 which flowed ^H7857 in the midst ^H8432 of the land ^H776, saying ^H559, “Why ^H4100 should the kings ^H4428 of Assyria ^H804 come ^H935 and find ^H4672 abundant ^H7227 water ^H4325?” 5 And he strengthened ^H2388 himself and rebuilt ^H1129 all ^H3605 the wall ^H2346 that had been broken ^H6555 down ^H6555 and [fn]erected ^H5927 towers ^H4026 on it, and built another ^H312 outside ^H2351 wall ^H2346 and strengthened ^H2388 the [fn]Millo ^H4407 in the city ^H5892 of David ^H1732, and made ^H6213 weapons ^H7973 and shields ^H4043 in great ^H7230 number ^H7230. 6 He also put ^H5414 military ^H4421 commanders ^H8269 over ^H5921 the people ^H5971 and gathered ^H6908 them to him in the square ^H7339 at the city ^H5892 gate ^H8179, and spoke ^H1696 to their hearts ^H3824, saying ^H559, 7 “Be strong ^H2388 and courageous ^H553. Do not fear ^H3372 or be dismayed ^H2865 because ^H4480 H6440 of the king ^H4428 of Assyria ^H804 nor because ^H4480 H6440 of all ^H3605 the multitude ^H1995 that is with him; for the one with us is greater ^H7227 than ^H4480 the one with him. 8 With him is only an arm ^H2220 of flesh ^H1320, but with us is Yahweh ^H3068 our God ^H430 to help ^H5826 us and to fight ^H3898 our battles ^H4421.” And the people ^H5971 were sustained ^H5564 by the words ^H1697 of Hezekiah ^H2396 king ^H4428 of Judah ^H3063.

Sennacherib Reproaches Yahweh

9 After ^H310 this ^H2088 Sennacherib ^H5576 king ^H4428 of Assyria ^H804 sent ^H7971 his servants ^H5650 to Jerusalem ^H3389 while he was [fn]besieging ^H5921 Lachish ^H3923 with all ^H3605 his forces ^H4475 with him, against ^H5921 Hezekiah ^H2396 king ^H4428 of Judah ^H3063 and against ^H5921 all ^H3605 Judah ^H3063 who ^H834 were at Jerusalem ^H3389, saying ^H559,

10 “Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Sennacherib ^H5576 king ^H4428 of Assyria ^H804, ‘On what ^H4100 are you trusting ^H982 that you are remaining ^H3427 in Jerusalem ^H3389 under siege ^H4692? 11 Is not Hezekiah ^H2396 inciting ^H5496 you to give ^H5414 yourselves over to die ^H4191 by hunger ^H7458 and by thirst ^H6772, saying ^H559, “Yahweh ^H3068 our God ^H430 will deliver ^H5337 us from the [fn]hand ^H3709 of the king ^H4428 of Assyria ^H804”? 12 Has not the same ^H1931 Hezekiah ^H2396 taken ^H5493 away ^H5493 His high ^H1116 places ^H1116 and His altars ^H4196, and said ^H559 to Judah ^H3063 and [fn]Jerusalem ^H3389, “You shall worship ^H2331 before ^H6440 one ^H259 altar ^H4196, and on it you shall offer ^H6999 offerings up ^H6999 in ^H6999 smoke ^H6999”? 13 Do you not know ^H3045 what ^H4100 I and my fathers ^H1 have done ^H6213 to all ^H3605 the peoples ^H5971 of the lands ^H776? Were ^H3201 the gods ^H430 of the nations ^H1471 of the lands ^H776 able ^H3201 at ^H3201 all ^H3201 to deliver ^H5337 their land ^H776 from my hand ^H3027? 14 Who ^H4310 was there among all ^H3605 the gods ^H430 of these ^H428 nations ^H1471 which ^H834 my fathers ^H1 devoted ^H2763 to destruction ^H2763, who ^H834 could ^H3201 deliver ^H5337 his people ^H5971 from my hand ^H3027, that your God ^H430 should be ^H3201 able ^H3201 to deliver ^H5337 you from my hand ^H3027? 15 So now ^H6258, do not let Hezekiah ^H2396 deceive ^H5378 you or incite ^H5496 you like this ^H2088, and do not believe ^H539 him, for no ^H3808 H3605 god ^H433 of any ^H3605 nation ^H1471 or kingdom ^H4467 was ^H3201 able ^H3201 to deliver ^H5337 his people ^H5971 from my hand ^H3027 or from the hand ^H3027 of my fathers ^H1. How ^H637 much ^H637 H3588 less ^H637 will your God ^H430 deliver ^H5337 you from my hand ^H3027?’”

16 His servants ^H5650 spoke ^H1696 further ^H5750 against ^H5921 Yahweh ^H3068 God ^H430 and against ^H5921 His servant ^H5650 Hezekiah ^H2396. 17 He also wrote ^H3789 letters ^H5612 to [fn]reproach ^H2778 Yahweh ^H3068, the God ^H430 of Israel ^H3478, and to speak ^H559 against ^H5921 Him, saying ^H559, “As the gods ^H430 of the nations ^H1471 of the lands ^H776 [fn]have not delivered ^H5337 their people ^H5971 from my hand ^H3027, so ^H3651 the God ^H430 of Hezekiah ^H2396 will not deliver ^H5337 His people ^H5971 from my hand ^H3027.” 18 And they called ^H7121 this out ^H7121 with a loud ^H1419 voice ^H6963 in the language ^H3066 of ^H3066 Judah ^H3066 to the people ^H5971 of Jerusalem ^H3389 who ^H834 were on the wall ^H2346, to instill fear ^H3372 and terrify ^H926 them, so ^H4616 that they might capture ^H3920 the city ^H5892. 19 And they spoke ^H1696 [fn]of the God ^H430 of Jerusalem ^H3389 as of the gods ^H430 of the peoples ^H5971 of the earth ^H776, the work ^H4639 of men’s ^H120 hands ^H3027.

Yahweh Wipes Out the Men of Assyria

20 But King ^H4428 Hezekiah ^H2396 and Isaiah ^H3470 the prophet ^H5030, the son ^H1121 of Amoz ^H531, prayed ^H6419 about ^H5921 this ^H2088 and cried ^H2199 out ^H2199 to heaven ^H8064.

21 And Yahweh ^H3068 sent ^H7971 an angel ^H4397 who wiped ^H3582 out ^H3582 every ^H3605 mighty ^H1368 man ^H1368 of valor ^H2428, ruler ^H5057, and commander ^H8269 in the camp ^H4264 of the king ^H4428 of Assyria ^H804. So he returned ^H7725 [fn]in shame ^H1322 H6440 to his own land ^H776. And he entered ^H935 the house ^H1004 of his god ^H430, and some ^H4480 of [fn]his own ^H4578 children ^H3329 H4578 caused him to fall ^H5307 there ^H8033 by the sword ^H2719. 22 So Yahweh ^H3068 saved ^H3467 Hezekiah ^H2396 and the inhabitants ^H3427 of Jerusalem ^H3389 from the hand ^H3027 of Sennacherib ^H5576 the king ^H4428 of Assyria ^H804 and from the hand ^H3027 of all ^H3605 others, and He [fn]guided ^H5095 them on every ^H5439 side ^H5439. 23 And many ^H7227 were bringing ^H935 presents ^H4503 to Yahweh ^H3068 at Jerusalem ^H3389 and precious ^H4030 things ^H4030 to Hezekiah ^H2396 king ^H4428 of Judah ^H3063, so that he was lifted ^H5375 up ^H5375 in the sight ^H5869 of all ^H3605 nations ^H1471 thereafter ^{H4480 H310 H3651}.

24 In those ^H1992 days ^H3117 Hezekiah ^H2396 became ^H2470 sick ^H2470 to the point of death ^H4191; and he prayed ^H6419 to Yahweh ^H3068, and [fn]Yahweh spoke ^H559 to him and gave ^H5414 him a miraculous ^H4159 sign ^H4159. 25 But Hezekiah ^H2396 gave ^H7725 no ^H3808 return ^H7725 for the benefit ^H1576 [fn]he received ^H5921, because ^H3588 his heart ^H3820 was ^H1361 [fn]proud ^H1361; therefore wrath ^H7110 came ^H1961 on him and on Judah ^H3063 and Jerusalem ^H3389. 26 However, Hezekiah ^H2396 [fn]humbled ^H3665 the pride ^H1363 of his heart ^H3820, both he and the inhabitants ^H3427 of Jerusalem ^H3389, so that the wrath ^H7110 of Yahweh ^H3068 did not come ^H935 on them in the days ^H3117 of Hezekiah ^H2396.

27 Now Hezekiah ^H2396 had ^H1961 abundant ^H3966 riches ^H6239 and honor ^H3519; and he made ^H6213 for himself treasuries ^H214 for silver ^H3701, gold ^H2091, precious ^H3368 stones ^H68, spices ^H1314, shields ^H4043, and all ^H3605 kinds of desirable ^H2532 articles ^H3627, 28 storehouses ^H4543 also for the produce ^H8393 of grain ^H1715, wine ^H8492, and oil ^H3323, stalls ^H723 for all ^H3605 kinds ^H929 of ^H929 cattle ^H929, and [fn]sheepfolds ^H723 for the flocks ^H5739. 29 He also made ^H6213 cities ^H5892 for himself and acquired ^H4735 flocks ^H6629 and herds ^H1241 in abundance ^H7230, for God ^H430 had given ^H5414 him exceedingly ^H7227 abundant ^H3966 [fn]wealth ^H7399. 30 And it was Hezekiah ^H2396 who stopped ^H5640 the upper ^H5945 outlet ^H4161 of the waters ^H4325 of Gihon ^H1521 and directed ^H3474 them to the west ^H4628 side ^H4628 of the city ^H5892 of David ^H1732. And Hezekiah ^H2396 succeeded ^H6743 in all ^H3605 that he did ^H4639. 31 Even ^H3651 in the matter of the envoys ^H3887 of the rulers ^H8269 of Babylon ^H894, who sent ^H7971 to him to inquire ^H1875 of the miraculous ^H4159 sign ^H4159 that had happened ^H1961 in the land ^H776, God ^H430 left ^H5800 him alone only to test ^H5254 him, that He might know ^H3045 all ^H3605 that was in his heart ^H3824.

32 Now the rest ^H3499 of the acts ^H1697 of Hezekiah ^H2396 and his deeds ^H2617 of ^H2617 lovingkindness ^H2617, behold ^H2009, they are written ^H3789 in the vision ^H2377 of Isaiah ^H3470 the prophet ^H5030, the son ^H1121 of Amoz ^H531, in the Book ^H5612 of the Kings ^H4428 of Judah ^H3063 and Israel ^H3478. 33 So Hezekiah ^H2396 slept ^H7901 with his fathers ^H1, and they buried ^H6912 him in the [fn]upper ^H4608 section ^H4608 of the tombs ^H6913 of the sons ^H1121 of David ^H1732; and all ^H3605 Judah ^H3063 and the inhabitants ^H3427 of Jerusalem ^H3389 honored ^H3519 him at his death ^H4194. And Manasseh ^H4519 his son ^H1121 became ^H4427 king ^H4427 in ^H8478 his place ^H8478.
