Jehoahaz Reigns over Israel

1 In the twenty-third ^H6242 H7969 year ^H8141 of Joash ^H3060 the son ^H1121 of Ahaziah ^H274, king ^H4428 of Judah ^H3063, Jehoahaz ^H3059 the son ^H1121 of Jehu ^H3058 became ^H4427 king ^H4427 over ^H5921 Israel ^H3478 at Samaria ^H8111, and he reigned seventeen ^H7651 H6240 years ^H8141.

2 And he did ^H6213 what ^H7451 was evil ^H7451 in the sight ^H5869 of Yahweh ^H3068 and followed ^H1980 H310 the sins ^H2403 of Jeroboam ^H3379 the son ^H1121 of Nebat ^H5028, with which ^H834 he made Israel ^H3478 sin ^H2398; he did not depart ^H5493 from them. 3 So the anger ^H639 of Yahweh ^H3068 burned ^H2734 against Israel ^H3478, and He gave ^H5414 them continually ^H3605 H3117 into the hand ^H3027 of Hazael ^H2371 king ^H4428 of Aram ^H758, and into the hand ^H3027 of Ben-hadad ^H1130 the son ^H1121 of Hazael ^H2371. 4 Then Jehoahaz ^H3059 entreated ^H2470 the face ^H6440 of Yahweh ^H3068, and Yahweh ^H3068 listened ^H8085 to him; for He saw ^H7200 the oppression ^H3906 of Israel ^H3478, how ^H3588 the king ^H4428 of Aram ^H758 oppressed ^H3905 them. 5 And Yahweh ^H3068 gave ^H5414 Israel ^H3478 a savior ^H3467, so that they came ^H3318 out ^H3318 from under ^H8478 the hand ^H3027 of the Arameans ^H758; and the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 lived ^H3427 in their tents ^H168 as formerly ^H8032 H8543. 6 Nevertheless ^H389 they did not depart ^H5493 from the sins ^H2403 of the house ^H1004 of Jeroboam ^H3379, with which ^H834 he made Israel ^H3478 sin ^H2398, but walked ^H1980 in [fn]them; and the Asherah ^H842 also ^H1571 remained standing ^H5975 in Samaria ^H8111. 7 For he did not leave ^H7604 to Jehoahaz ^H3059 any people ^H5971 for the army except ^H3588 H518 50 ^H2572 horsemen ^H6571 and 10 ^H6235 chariots ^H7393 and 10,000 ^H6235 H505 foot soldiers ^H7273, for the king ^H4428 of Aram ^H758 had caused ^H6 them to ^H6 perish ^H6 and made ^H7760 them like the dust ^H6083 at threshing ^H1758. 8 Now the rest ^H3499 of the acts ^H1697 of Jehoahaz ^H3059, and all ^H3605 that he did ^H6213 and his might ^H1369, are they not written ^H3789 in the Book ^H5612 of the Chronicles ^H1697 H3117 of the Kings ^H4428 of Israel ^H3478? 9 And Jehoahaz ^H3059 slept ^H7901 with his fathers ^H1, and they buried ^H6912 him in Samaria ^H8111; and Joash ^H3060 his son ^H1121 became ^H4427 king ^H4427 in ^H8478 his place ^H8478.

Jehoash Reigns over Israel

10 In the thirty-seventh ^H7970 H7651 year ^H8141 of Joash ^H3060 king ^H4428 of Judah ^H3063, Jehoash ^H3060 the son ^H1121 of Jehoahaz ^H3059 became ^H4427 king ^H4427 over ^H5921 Israel ^H3478 in Samaria ^H8111 and reigned sixteen ^H8337 H6240 years ^H8141.

The Death of Elisha

14 Now Elisha ^H477 [fn]became ^H2470 sick ^H2470 with the illness ^H2483 of which ^H834 he was to die ^H4191. So Joash ^H3060 the king ^H4428 of Israel ^H3478 came ^H3381 down ^H3381 to him and wept ^H1058 over ^H5921 [fn]him and said ^H559, “My father ^H1, my father ^H1, the chariots ^H7393 of Israel ^H3478 and its horsemen ^H6571!”

15 And Elisha ^H477 said ^H559 to him, “Take ^H3947 a bow ^H7198 and arrows ^H2671.” So he [fn]took ^H3947 a bow ^H7198 and arrows ^H2671. 16 Then he said ^H559 to the king ^H4428 of Israel ^H3478, “Put ^H7392 your hand ^H3027 on the bow ^H7198.” And he put ^H7392 his hand ^H3027 on it, then Elisha ^H477 placed ^H7760 his hands ^H3027 on the king’s ^H4428 hands ^H3027. 17 And he said ^H559, “Open ^H6605 the window ^H2474 toward the east ^H6924,” and he opened ^H6605 it. Then Elisha ^H477 said ^H559, “Shoot ^H3384!” And he shot ^H3384. And he said ^H559, “Yahweh’s ^H3068 arrow ^H2671 of salvation ^H8668, even the arrow ^H2671 of salvation ^H8668 over Aram ^H758; for you will strike ^H5221 the Arameans ^H758 at Aphek ^H663 until ^H5704 you have consumed ^H3615 them.” 18 Then he said ^H559, “Take ^H3947 the arrows ^H2671,” and he took ^H3947 them. And he said ^H559 to the king ^H4428 of Israel ^H3478, “Strike ^H5221 the ground ^H776,” and he struck ^H5221 it three ^H7969 times ^H6471 and stood ^H5975 still. 19 So the man ^H376 of God ^H430 was angry ^H7107 with him and said ^H559, “You should have struck ^H5221 five ^H2568 or ^H176 six ^H8337 times ^H6471, then ^H227 you would have struck ^H5221 Aram ^H758 until ^H5704 you would have consumed ^H3615 it. But now ^H6258 you shall strike ^H5221 Aram ^H758 only three ^H7969 times ^H6471.”

20 And Elisha ^H477 died ^H4191, and they buried ^H6912 him. Now the marauding ^H1416 bands ^H1416 of the Moabites ^H4124 would enter ^H935 into the land ^H776 in the spring ^H935 of the year ^H8141. 21 Now it happened that they were burying ^H6912 a man ^H376, and behold ^H2009, they saw ^H7200 a marauding ^H1416 band ^H1416; and they cast ^H7993 the man ^H376 into the grave ^H6913 of Elisha ^H477. And when the man ^H376 [fn]touched ^H5060 the bones ^H6106 of Elisha ^H477 he became alive ^H2421 and stood ^H6965 up ^H6965 on his feet ^H7272.

22 Now Hazael ^H2371 king ^H4428 of Aram ^H758 had oppressed ^H3905 Israel ^H3478 all ^H3605 the days ^H3117 of Jehoahaz ^H3059. 23 But Yahweh ^H3068 was ^H2603 gracious ^H2603 to them and had ^H7355 compassion ^H7355 on ^H7355 them and turned ^H6437 to them because ^H4616 of His covenant ^H1285 with Abraham ^H85, Isaac ^H3327, and Jacob ^H3290, and would ^H14 not bring ^H7843 them to ruin ^H7843 or cast ^H7993 them from His presence ^H6440 until ^H5704 now ^H6258.

24 Then Hazael ^H2371 king ^H4428 of Aram ^H758 died ^H4191, and Ben-hadad ^H1130 his son ^H1121 became ^H4427 king ^H4427 in ^H8478 his place ^H8478. 25 Then Jehoash ^H3060 the son ^H1121 of Jehoahaz ^H3059 took ^H3947 again ^H7725 from the hand ^H3027 of Ben-hadad ^H1130 the son ^H1121 of Hazael ^H2371 the cities ^H5892 which ^H834 he had taken ^H3947 in war ^H4421 from the hand ^H3027 of Jehoahaz ^H3059 his father ^H1. Three ^H7969 times ^H6471 Joash ^H3060 struck ^H5221 him and recovered ^H7725 the cities ^H5892 of Israel ^H3478.
