The Ammonites Dishonor David’s Men
1 Now it happened H1961 afterwards H310 H3651, that the king H4428 of the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983 died H4191, and Hanun H2586 his son H1121 became H4427 king H4427 in H8478 his place H8478.
2 So David H1732 said H559, “I will show H6213 lovingkindness H2617 to Hanun H2586 the son H1121 of Nahash H5176, just H834 as his father H1 showed H6213 lovingkindness H2617 to me.” So David H1732 sent H7971 to comfort H5162 him concerning H413 his father H1 by the hand H3027 of his servants H5650. And David’s H1732 servants H5650 came H935 to the land H776 of the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983. 3 But the princes H8269 of the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983 said H559 to Hanun H2586 their lord H113, “In your eyes H5869, is David H1732 honoring H3513 your father H1 because H3588 he has sent H7971 comforters H5162 to you? Has David H1732 not sent H7971 his servants H5650 to you in order H5668 to search H2713 the city H5892, to spy H7270 it out H7270 and overthrow H2015 it?” 4 So Hanun H2586 took H3947 David’s H1732 servants H5650 and shaved H1548 off H1548 half H2677 of their beards H2206, and cut H3772 off H3772 their garments H4063 in the middle H2677 as far H5704 as their hips H8351, and sent H7971 them away H7971. 5 Then they told H5046 it to David H1732. And he sent H7971 to meet H7122 them, for the men H376 were greatly H3966 dishonored H3637. And the king H4428 said H559, “[fn]Stay H3427 at Jericho H3405 until H5704 your beards H2206 grow H6779, and then return H7725.”
6 Then the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983 saw H7200 that they had become H887 odious H887 to David H1732. So the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983 sent H7971 and hired H7936 the Arameans H758 of Beth-rehob H1050 and the Arameans H758 of Zobah H6678, 20,000 H6242 H505 foot H7273 soldiers H7273, and the king H4428 of Maacah H4601 with 1,000 H505 men H376, and the men H382 of H382 Tob H382 with 12,000 H8147 H6240 H505 men H376. 7 Then David H1732 heard H8085 of it and sent H7971 Joab H3097 and all H3605 the army H6635, the mighty H1368 men H1368. 8 And the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983 came H3318 out H3318 and arranged H6186 themselves for battle H4421 at the entrance H6607 of the gate H8179 of the city. But the Arameans H758 of Zobah H6678 and of Rehob H7340 and the men H382 of H382 Tob H382 and Maacah H4601 were by H905 themselves H905 in the field H7704.
David Defeats Ammon and Aram
9 Then Joab H3097 saw H7200 that [fn]the battle H6440 H4421 was set against H413 him from the front H6440 and from the rear H268. So he chose H977 from all H3605 the choice H977 men of Israel H3478, and they arranged H6186 themselves to meet H7122 the Arameans H758.
10 But the remainder H3499 of the people H5971 he put H5414 in the hand H3027 of Abishai H52 his brother H251; and he arranged H6186 them to meet H7122 the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983. 11 And he said H559, “If H518 the Arameans H758 are too H4480 strong H2388 for me, then you shall save H3444 me, but if H518 the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983 are too H4480 strong H2388 for you, then I will come H1980 to save H3467 you. 12 Be strong H2388, and let us show H2388 strength H2388 for the sake H1157 of our people H5971 and for the cities H5892 of our God H430; and may Yahweh H3068 do H6213 what H2896 is H2896 good H2896 in His sight H5869.” 13 So Joab H3097 and the people H5971 who H834 were with him drew H5066 near H5066 for the battle H4421 against the Arameans H758, and they fled H5127 before H4480 H6440 him. 14 Now the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983 saw H7200 that the Arameans H758 fled H5127. So they also fled H5127 before H4480 H6440 Abishai H52 and came H935 into the city H5892. Then Joab H3097 returned H7725 from fighting against H5921 the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983 and came H935 to Jerusalem H3389.
15 Then the Arameans H758 saw H7200 that they had been [fn]defeated H5062 by Israel H3478. So they gathered H622 themselves together H3162. 16 And Hadadezer H1909 sent H7971 and brought H3318 out H3318 the Arameans H758 who H834 were beyond H4480 H5676 the [fn]River H5104, and they came H935 to Helam H2431; and Shobach H7731 the commander H8269 of the army H6635 of Hadadezer H1909 [fn]led H6440 them. 17 And it was told H5046 to David H1732, so he gathered H622 all H3605 Israel H3478 together and crossed H5674 the Jordan H3383, and came H935 to Helam H2431. And the Arameans H758 arranged H6186 themselves to meet H7122 David H1732 and fought H3898 against H5973 him. 18 But the Arameans H758 fled H5127 before H4480 H6440 Israel H3478, and David H1732 killed H2026 of the Arameans H758 700 H7651 H3967 charioteers H7393 and 40,000 H705 H505 horsemen H6571 and struck H5221 down H5221 Shobach H7731 the commander H8269 of their army H6635, and he died H4191 there H8033. 19 Then all H3605 the kings H4428, the servants H5650 of Hadadezer H1909, saw H7200 that they were [fn]defeated H5062 by Israel H3478. So they made H7999 peace H7999 with Israel H3478 and served H5647 them. And the Arameans H758 were H3372 afraid H3372 to save H3467 the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983 anymore H5750.
