The Ark of God Inhabits a Tent

1 Now it happened ^H1961 when ^H3588 the king ^H4428 inhabited ^H3427 his house ^H1004, and Yahweh ^H3068 had given ^H5117 him rest ^H5117 on every ^H5439 side ^H5439 from all ^H3605 his enemies ^H340,

2 that the king ^H4428 said ^H559 to Nathan ^H5416 the prophet ^H5030, “See ^H7200 now ^H4994, I inhabit ^H3427 H8432 a house ^H1004 of cedar ^H730, but the ark ^H727 of God ^H430 inhabits ^H3427 H8432 tent curtains ^H3407.” 3 So Nathan ^H5416 said ^H559 to the king ^H4428, “Go ^H1980, do ^H6213 all ^H3605 that is in your heart ^H3824, for Yahweh ^H3068 is with you.”

4 Now it happened in the same ^H1931 night ^H3915, that the word ^H1697 of Yahweh ^H3068 came ^H1961 to Nathan ^H5416, saying ^H559, 5 “Go ^H1980 and say ^H559 to My servant ^H5650 David ^H1732, ‘Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068, “Are you the one who would build ^H1129 Me a house ^H1004 to inhabit ^H3427? 6 For I have not inhabited ^H3427 a house ^H1004 since ^H4480 the day ^H3117 I brought ^H5927 up ^H5927 the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 from Egypt ^H4714, even to this ^H2088 day ^H3117; but I have been ^H1961 going ^H1980 about ^H1980 in a tent ^H168, even in a [fn]tabernacle ^H4908. 7 Wherever ^H3605 H834 I have gone ^H1980 about ^H1980 with all ^H3605 the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478, did I speak ^H1696 a word ^H1697 with one ^H259 of the tribes ^H7626 of Israel ^H3478, which ^H834 I commanded ^H6680 to shepherd ^H7462 My people ^H5971 Israel ^H3478, saying ^H559, ‘Why ^H4100 have you not built ^H1129 Me a house ^H1004 of cedar ^H730?’”’

David’s House Will Be Established Forever

8 So now ^H6258, thus ^H3541 you shall say ^H559 to My servant ^H5650 David ^H1732, ‘Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068 of hosts ^H6635, “I Myself took ^H3947 you from the pasture ^H5116, from following ^H310 the sheep ^H6629, to be ruler ^H5057 over ^H5921 My people ^H5971 Israel ^H3478. 9 And I have been ^H1961 with you wherever ^H3605 H834 you have gone ^H1980 and have cut ^H3772 off ^H3772 all ^H3605 your enemies ^H340 from before ^H6440 you; and I will make ^H6213 you a great ^H1419 name ^H8034, like the name ^H8034 of the great ^H1419 men ^H1419 who ^H834 are on the earth ^H776. 10 And I will appoint ^H7760 a place ^H4725 for My people ^H5971 Israel ^H3478 and will plant ^H5193 them, that they may dwell ^H7931 in ^H7931 their own place ^H8478 and not be disturbed ^H7264 again ^H5750; and ^H3808 the [fn]unrighteous ^H5766 H1121 will not afflict ^H6031 them any ^H3254 more ^H3254 as formerly ^H7223, 11 even from the day ^H3117 that I commanded ^H6680 judges ^H8199 to be over ^H5921 My people ^H5971 Israel ^H3478; and I will give ^H5117 you rest ^H5117 from all ^H3605 your enemies ^H340. Yahweh ^H3068 also declares ^H5046 to you that Yahweh ^H3068 will make ^H6213 a house ^H1004 for you. 12 When ^H3588 your days ^H3117 are fulfilled ^H4390 and you lie ^H7901 down ^H7901 with your fathers ^H1, I will raise ^H6965 up ^H6965 one of your seed ^H2233 after ^H310 you, who ^H834 will come ^H3318 forth ^H3318 from [fn]your own body ^H4578, and I will establish ^H3559 his kingdom ^H4467. 13 He shall build ^H1129 a house ^H1004 for My name ^H8034, and I will establish ^H3559 the throne ^H3678 of his kingdom ^H4467 forever ^H5704 H5769. 14 I will be a father ^H1 to him and he will be a son ^H1121 to Me; when ^H834 he commits ^H5753 iniquity ^H5753, I will reprove ^H3198 him with the rod ^H7626 of men ^H376 and the strikes ^H5061 from the sons ^H1121 of men ^H120, 15 but My lovingkindness ^H2617 shall not be removed ^H5493 from him, as I removed ^H5493 it from Saul ^H7586, whom ^H834 I removed ^H5493 from before ^H6440 you. 16 And your house ^H1004 and your kingdom ^H4467 shall [fn]endure ^H539 before ^H6440 [fn]Me forever ^H5704 H5769; your throne ^H3678 shall be established ^H3559 forever ^H5704 H5769.”’” 17 According to all ^H3605 these ^H428 words ^H1697 and according to all ^H3605 this ^H2088 vision ^H2384, so ^H3651 Nathan ^H5416 spoke ^H1696 to David ^H1732.

David Magnifies Yahweh’s Name

18 Then David ^H1732 the king ^H4428 went ^H935 in ^H935 and sat ^H3427 before ^H6440 Yahweh ^H3068, and he said ^H559, “Who ^H4310 am I, O Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068, and what ^H4310 is my house ^H1004, that You have brought ^H935 me this ^H1988 far ^H1988?

19 And yet ^H5750 this ^H2088 was ^H6994 a ^H6994 small ^H6994 thing ^H6994 in Your eyes ^H5869, O Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068, for You have spoken ^H1696 also ^H1571 of the house ^H1004 of Your slave ^H5650 concerning the distant ^H7350 future ^H7350. And this ^H2088 is the law ^H8451 of man ^H120, O Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068. 20 And again ^H5750 what ^H4100 more ^H5750 can David ^H1732 say ^H1696 to You? And You know ^H3045 Your slave ^H5650, O Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068! 21 For the sake ^H5668 of Your word ^H1697, and according to Your own heart ^H3820, You have done ^H6213 all ^H3605 this ^H2088 greatness ^H1420 to let Your slave ^H5650 know ^H3045. 22 For ^H5921 this ^H5921 H3651 reason ^H5921 H3651 You are ^H1431 great ^H1431, O Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068; for there ^H369 is ^H369 none ^H369 like ^H3644 You, and there ^H369 is no ^H369 God ^H430 besides ^H2108 You, according to all ^H3605 that we have heard ^H8085 with our ears ^H241. 23 And what ^H4310 one ^H259 nation ^H1471 on the earth ^H776 is like Your people ^H5971 Israel ^H3478, whom ^H834 God ^H430 went ^H1980 to redeem ^H6299 for Himself as a people ^H5971 and to make ^H7760 a name ^H8034 for Himself, and to do ^H6213 a great ^H1420 thing ^H1420 for You and awesome ^H3372 things ^H3372 for Your land ^H776, before ^H4480 H6440 Your people ^H5971 whom ^H834 You have redeemed ^H6299 for Yourself from Egypt ^H4714, from nations ^H1471 and their gods ^H430? 24 Yet You have established ^H3559 for Yourself Your people ^H5971 Israel ^H3478 as Your own people ^H5971 forever ^H5704 H5769, and You, O Yahweh ^H3068, have become ^H1961 their God ^H430. 25 So now ^H6258, O Yahweh ^H3068 God ^H430, the word ^H1697 that You have spoken ^H1696 concerning ^H5921 Your slave ^H5650 and concerning his house ^H1004, establish ^H6965 it forever ^H5704 H5769, and do ^H6213 as You have spoken ^H1696, 26 that Your name ^H8034 may be ^H1431 magnified ^H1431 forever ^H5704 H5769, by saying ^H559, ‘Yahweh ^H3068 of hosts ^H6635 is God ^H430 over ^H5921 Israel ^H3478’; and the house ^H1004 of Your [fn]servant ^H5650 David ^H1732 shall be established ^H3559 before ^H6440 You. 27 For You, O Yahweh ^H3068 of hosts ^H6635, the God ^H430 of Israel ^H3478, have revealed ^H1540 in the hearing ^H241 of Your slave ^H5650, saying ^H559, ‘I will build ^H1129 you a house ^H1004’; therefore ^H5921 H3651 Your slave ^H5650 has found ^H4672 courage in his heart ^H3820 to pray ^H6419 this ^H2088 prayer ^H8605 to You. 28 So now ^H6258, O Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068, You are God ^H430, and Your words ^H1697 are truth ^H571, and You have [fn]promised ^H1696 this ^H2088 good ^H2896 thing ^H2896 to Your slave ^H5650. 29 So now ^H6258, be pleased ^H2974 and bless ^H1288 the house ^H1004 of Your slave ^H5650, that it may be ^H1961 forever ^H5769 before ^H6440 You. For You, O Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068, have spoken ^H1696; and with Your blessing ^H1293 may the house ^H1004 of Your slave ^H5650 be blessed ^H1288 forever ^H5769.”
