Yahweh Cuts a Covenant with Abram

1 After ^H310 these ^H428 things ^H1697 the word ^H1697 of Yahweh ^H3068 came ^H1961 to Abram ^H87 in a vision ^H4236, saying ^H559,

“Do not fear ^H3372, Abram ^H87,

I am a shield ^H4043 to you;

[fn]Your reward ^H7939 shall be ^H7235 very ^H3966 great ^H7235.”

2 And Abram ^H87 said ^H559, “O Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068, what ^H4100 will You give ^H5414 me, as I go on ^H1980 being childless ^H6185, and the [fn]heir ^H1121 H4943 of my house ^H1004 is Eliezer ^H461 of Damascus ^H1834?”

3 And Abram ^H87 said ^H559, “[fn]Since ^H2005 You have given ^H5414 no ^H3808 seed ^H2233 to me, behold ^H2009, [fn]one ^H1121 born ^H1121 in my house ^H1004 is ^H3423 my heir ^H3423.” 4 Then behold ^H2009, the word ^H1697 of Yahweh ^H3068 came to him, saying ^H559, “This ^H2088 one will not be ^H3423 your heir ^H3423; but one who ^H834 will come ^H3318 forth ^H3318 from your own [fn]body ^H4578, he shall be ^H3423 your heir ^H3423.” 5 And He brought ^H3318 him outside ^H2351 and said ^H559, “Now ^H4994 look ^H5027 toward the heavens ^H8064, and number ^H5608 the stars ^H3556, if ^H518 you are ^H3201 able ^H3201 to number ^H5608 them.” And He said ^H559 to him, “So ^H3541 shall your seed ^H2233 be.” 6 Then he believed ^H539 in Yahweh ^H3068; and He counted ^H2803 it to him as righteousness ^H6666. 7 And He said ^H559 to him, “I am Yahweh ^H3068 who ^H834 brought ^H3318 you out ^H3318 of Ur ^H218 of the Chaldeans ^H3778, to give ^H5414 you this ^H2088 land ^H776 to [fn]possess ^H3423 it.” 8 And he said ^H559, “O Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068, how ^H4100 may I know ^H3045 that I will [fn]possess ^H3423 it?” 9 So He said ^H559 to him, “[fn]Bring ^H3947 Me a three ^H8027 year ^H8027 old ^H8027 heifer ^H5697, and a three ^H8027 year ^H8027 old ^H8027 female ^H5795 goat ^H5795, and a three ^H8027 year ^H8027 old ^H8027 ram ^H352, and a turtledove ^H8449, and a young ^H1469 pigeon ^H1469.” 10 Then he [fn]brought ^H3947 all ^H3605 these ^H428 to Him and split ^H1334 them into parts ^H1334 [fn]down ^H8432 the middle ^H8432 and laid ^H5414 each ^H376 part ^H1335 opposite ^H7122 the other ^H7453; but he did not split ^H1334 apart ^H1334 the birds ^H6833. 11 Then the birds ^H5861 of ^H5861 prey ^H5861 came ^H3381 down ^H3381 upon the carcasses ^H6297, and Abram ^H87 drove ^H5380 them away ^H5380.

12 Now it happened that when the sun ^H8121 was going ^H935 down, a deep ^H8639 sleep ^H8639 fell ^H5307 upon Abram ^H87; and behold ^H2009, [fn]terror ^H367 and great ^H1419 darkness ^H2825 fell ^H5307 upon him. 13 Then God said ^H559 to Abram ^H87, “Know ^H3045 for ^H3045 certain ^H3045 that your seed ^H2233 will be sojourners ^H1616 in a land ^H776 that is not theirs ^H1992, [fn]and they will be enslaved ^H5647 and mistreated ^H6031 four ^H702 hundred ^H3967 years ^H8141. 14 But I will also ^H1571 judge ^H1777 the nation ^H1471 to whom ^H834 they are enslaved ^H5647, and afterward ^H310 H3651 they will come ^H3318 out ^H3318 with [fn]many ^H1419 possessions ^H7399. 15 As for you, you shall go ^H935 to your fathers ^H1 in peace ^H7965; you will be buried ^H6912 at a good ^H2896 old ^H7872 age ^H7872. 16 Then in the fourth ^H7243 generation ^H1755 they will return ^H7725 here ^H2008, for the iniquity ^H5771 of the Amorite ^H567 is not yet ^H5704 H2008 complete ^H8003.”

17 Now it happened ^H1961 that the sun ^H8121 had set ^H935, and it was very ^H5939 dark ^H5939, and behold ^H2009, there appeared a smoking ^H6227 oven ^H8574 and a flaming ^H784 torch ^H3940 which ^H834 passed ^H5674 between ^H996 these ^H428 pieces ^H1506. 18 On that day ^H3117 Yahweh ^H3068 cut ^H3772 a covenant ^H1285 with Abram ^H87, saying ^H559,

“To your seed ^H2233 I have given ^H5414 this ^H2088 land ^H776,

From the river ^H5104 of Egypt ^H4714 as far ^H5704 as the great ^H1419 river ^H5104, the river ^H5104 Euphrates ^H6578:

19 the Kenite ^H7017 and the Kenizzite ^H7074 and the Kadmonite ^H6935 20 and the Hittite ^H2850 and the Perizzite ^H6522 and the Rephaim ^H7497 21 and the Amorite ^H567 and the Canaanite ^H3669 and the Girgashite ^H1622 and the Jebusite ^H2983.”
