Jacob Is Sent to Laban

1 So Isaac ^H3327 called ^H7121 Jacob ^H3290 and blessed ^H1288 him and commanded ^H6680 him and said ^H559 to him, “You shall not take ^H3947 a wife ^H802 from the daughters ^H1323 of Canaan ^H3667.

2 Arise ^H6965, go ^H1980 to Paddan-aram ^H6307, to the house ^H1004 of Bethuel ^H1328 your mother’s ^H517 father ^H1; and from there ^H8033 take ^H3947 to yourself a wife ^H802 from the daughters ^H1323 of Laban ^H3837 your mother’s ^H517 brother ^H251. 3 May [fn]God ^H410 Almighty ^H7706 bless ^H1288 you and make ^H6509 you fruitful ^H6509 and multiply ^H7235 you, that you may become ^H1961 an assembly ^H6951 of peoples ^H5971. 4 May He also give ^H5414 you the blessing ^H1293 of Abraham ^H85, to you and to your seed ^H2233 with you, that you may possess ^H3423 the land ^H776 of your sojournings ^H4033, which ^H834 God ^H430 gave ^H5414 to Abraham ^H85.” 5 Then Isaac ^H3327 sent ^H7971 Jacob ^H3290 away ^H7971, and he went ^H1980 to Paddan-aram ^H6307 to Laban ^H3837, son ^H1121 of Bethuel ^H1328 the Aramean ^H761, the brother ^H251 of Rebekah ^H7259, the mother ^H517 of Jacob ^H3290 and Esau ^H6215.

6 And Esau ^H6215 saw ^H7200 that Isaac ^H3327 had blessed ^H1288 Jacob ^H3290 and sent ^H7971 him away ^H7971 to Paddan-aram ^H6307 to take ^H3947 for himself a wife ^H802 from there ^H8033, and that when he blessed ^H1288 him he commanded ^H6680 him, saying ^H559, “You shall not take ^H3947 a wife ^H802 from the daughters ^H1323 of Canaan ^H3667,” 7 and that Jacob ^H3290 had listened ^H8085 to his father ^H1 and his mother ^H517 and had gone ^H1980 to Paddan-aram ^H6307. 8 So Esau ^H6215 saw ^H7200 that the daughters ^H1323 of Canaan ^H3667 were displeasing ^H7451 in the [fn]sight ^H5869 of his father ^H1 Isaac ^H3327; 9 and Esau ^H6215 went ^H1980 to Ishmael ^H3458 and took ^H3947 Mahalath ^H4258, the daughter ^H1323 of Ishmael ^H3458, Abraham’s ^H85 son ^H1121, the sister ^H269 of Nebaioth ^H5032, to be his wife ^H802, besides ^H5921 the wives ^H802 that he had.

Jacob’s Dream

10 Then Jacob ^H3290 departed ^H3318 from Beersheba ^H884 and went ^H1980 toward Haran ^H2771.

11 And he reached ^H6293 [fn]a certain place ^H4725 and spent ^H3885 the ^H3885 night ^H3885 there ^H8033 because ^H3588 the sun ^H8121 had set ^H935; and he took ^H3947 one of the stones ^H68 of the place ^H4725 and put ^H7760 it [fn]under ^H4763 his head ^H4763 and lay ^H7901 down ^H7901 in that place ^H4725. 12 Then he had ^H2492 a ^H2492 dream ^H2492, and behold ^H2009, a [fn]ladder ^H5551 stood ^H5324 on the earth ^H776 with its top ^H7218 touching ^H5060 heaven ^H8064; and behold ^H2009, the angels ^H4397 of God ^H430 were ascending ^H5927 and descending ^H3381 on it. 13 And behold ^H2009, Yahweh ^H3068 stood ^H5324 [fn]above ^H5921 it and said ^H559, “I am Yahweh ^H3068, the God ^H430 of your father ^H1 Abraham ^H85 and the God ^H430 of Isaac ^H3327; the land ^H776 on which ^H834 you lie ^H7901, I will give ^H5414 it to you and to your seed ^H2233. 14 And your seed ^H2233 will also be like the dust ^H6083 of the earth ^H776, and you will [fn]spread ^H6555 out ^H6555 to the west ^H3220 and to the east ^H6924 and to the north ^H6828 and to the south ^H5045; and in you and in your seed ^H2233 all ^H3605 the families ^H4940 of the earth ^H127 shall be blessed ^H1288. 15 Behold ^H2009, I am with you and will keep ^H8104 you wherever ^H3605 H834 you go ^H1980. And I will bring ^H7725 you back ^H7725 to this ^H2088 land ^H127; for I will not forsake ^H5800 you until ^H5704 H834 I have done ^H6213 what ^H834 I have [fn]promised ^H1696 you.” 16 Then Jacob ^H3290 awoke ^H3364 from his sleep ^H8142 and said ^H559, “Surely ^H403 Yahweh ^H3068 is in this ^H2088 place ^H4725, and I did not know ^H3045 it.” 17 And he was ^H3372 afraid ^H3372 and said ^H559, “How ^H4100 fearsome ^H3372 is this ^H2088 place ^H4725! This ^H2088 is none ^H369 other ^H369 than ^H3588 H518 the house ^H1004 of God ^H430, and this ^H2088 is the gate ^H8179 of heaven ^H8064.”

18 So Jacob ^H3290 rose ^H7925 early ^H7925 in the morning ^H1242 and took ^H3947 the stone ^H68 that he had put ^H7760 [fn]under ^H4763 his head ^H4763 and set ^H7760 it up as a pillar ^H4676 and poured ^H3332 oil ^H8081 on its top ^H7218. 19 And he called ^H7121 the name ^H8034 of that place ^H4725 [fn]Bethel ^H1008; however ^H199, [fn]previously ^H7223 the name ^H8034 of the city ^H5892 had been Luz ^H3870. 20 Then Jacob ^H3290 made ^H5087 a vow ^H5088, saying ^H559, “If ^H518 God ^H430 will be with me and will keep ^H8104 me on this ^H2088 journey ^H1870 on which I am going ^H1980, and will give ^H5414 me [fn]food ^H3899 to eat ^H398 and garments ^H899 to wear ^H3847, 21 and I return ^H7725 to my father’s ^H1 house ^H1004 in peace ^H7965, then Yahweh ^H3068 will be my God ^H430. 22 Now this ^H2088 stone ^H68, which ^H834 I have set ^H7760 up ^H7760 as a pillar ^H4676, will be God’s ^H430 house ^H1004, and of all ^H3605 that You give ^H5414 me I will surely ^H6237 give ^H6237 a ^H6237 tenth ^H6237 to You.”
