Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of Faith

1 Therefore ^G5105, since we have ^G2192 so ^G5118 great ^G5118 a cloud ^G3509 of witnesses ^G3144 surrounding ^G4029 us, laying ^G659 aside ^G659 every ^G3956 weight ^G3591 and the sin ^G266 which so easily ^G2139 entangles ^G2139 us, let us run ^G5143 with endurance ^G5281 the race ^G73 that is set ^G4295 before ^G4295 us,

2 [fn]fixing ^G872 our eyes ^G872 on Jesus ^G2424, the [fn]author ^G747 and perfecter ^G5051 of faith ^G4102, who ^G3739 for the joy ^G5479 set ^G4295 before ^G4295 Him endured ^G5278 the cross ^G4716, despising ^G2706 the shame ^G152, and has sat ^G2523 down ^G2523 at the right ^G1188 hand ^G1188 of the throne ^G2362 of God ^G2316.

3 For consider ^G357 Him who has endured ^G5278 such ^G5108 hostility ^G485 by sinners ^G268 against ^G1519 Himself ^G1438, so ^G2443 that you will not grow ^G2577 weary ^G2577, fainting ^G1590 [fn]in heart ^G5590.

The Father’s Discipline

4 You have not yet ^G3768 resisted ^G478 [fn]to the point ^G3360 of shedding blood ^G129 in your striving ^G464 against ^G4314 sin ^G266. 5 And you have forgotten ^G1585 the exhortation ^G3874 which ^G3748 is addressed ^G1256 to you as sons ^G5207,

“MY SON ^G5207, DO NOT REGARD ^G3643 LIGHTLY ^G3643 THE DISCIPLINE ^G3809 OF THE [fn]LORD ^G2962,

NOR ^G3366 FAINT ^G1590 WHEN YOU ARE REPROVED ^G1651 BY HIM;

6 FOR THOSE WHOM ^G3739 THE [fn]LORD ^G2962 LOVES ^G25 HE DISCIPLINES ^G3811,

AND HE FLOGS ^G3146 EVERY ^G3956 SON ^G5207 WHOM ^G3739 HE RECEIVES ^G3858.”

7 It is for discipline ^G3809 that you endure ^G5278; God ^G2316 deals ^G4374 with you as with sons ^G5207; for what ^G5101 son ^G5207 is there whom ^G3739 his father ^G3962 does not discipline ^G3811? 8 But if ^G1487 you are without ^G5565 discipline ^G3809, of which ^G3739 all ^G3956 have become ^G1096 partakers ^G3353, then ^G686 you are illegitimate ^G3541 children ^G3541 and not sons ^G5207. 9 Furthermore ^G1534, we [fn]had ^G2192 [fn]earthly ^G4561 fathers ^G3962 to discipline ^G3810 us, and we respected ^G1788 them. Shall we not much ^G4183 rather ^G3123 be subject ^G5293 to the Father ^G3962 of [fn]spirits ^G4151, and live ^G2198? 10 For they disciplined ^G3811 us for a short ^G3641 time ^G2250 as seemed ^G1380 best ^G1380 to them, but He disciplines us for our benefit ^G4851, so ^G1519 that we may share ^G3335 His holiness ^G41. 11 And all ^G3956 discipline ^G3809 for the moment ^G3918 seems ^G1380 not to be joyful ^G5479, but sorrowful ^G3077, but ^G1161 to those ^G3588 who have been trained ^G1128 by it, afterwards ^G5305 it yields ^G591 the peaceful ^G1516 fruit ^G2590 of righteousness ^G1343.

Contrast of Sinai and Zion

18 For you have not come ^G4334 to a mountain that can be touched ^G5584 and to a blazing ^G2545 fire ^G4442, and to darkness ^G1105 and gloom ^G2217 and whirlwind ^G2366,

19 and to the blast ^G2279 of a trumpet ^G4536 and the sound ^G5456 of words ^G4487 which ^G3739 was such that those ^G3588 who heard ^G191 begged ^G3868 that no ^G3361 further ^G4369 word ^G3056 be spoken ^G4369 to them. 20 For they could not bear ^G5342 what was being commanded ^G1291, “IF ^G2579 EVEN ^G2579 A BEAST ^G2342 TOUCHES ^G2345 THE MOUNTAIN ^G3735, IT WILL BE STONED ^G3036.” 21 And so ^G3779 terrible ^G5398 was what appeared ^G5324, that Moses ^G3475 said ^G3004, “I AM ^G1510 FULL ^G1630 OF FEAR ^G1630 and trembling ^G1790.” 22 But you have come ^G4334 to Mount ^G3735 Zion ^G4622 and to the city ^G4172 of the living ^G2198 God ^G2316, the heavenly ^G2032 Jerusalem ^G2419, and to myriads ^G3461 of [fn]angels ^G32, 23 to the festal ^G3831 gathering ^G3831 and assembly ^G1577 of the firstborn ^G4416 who are enrolled ^G583 in heaven ^G3772, and to God ^G2316, the Judge ^G2923 of all ^G3956, and to the spirits ^G4151 of the righteous ^G1342 made ^G5048 perfect ^G5048, 24 and to Jesus ^G2424, the mediator ^G3316 of a new ^G3501 covenant ^G1242, and to the sprinkled ^G4473 blood ^G129, which speaks ^G2980 better ^G2909 than ^G3844 the blood of Abel ^G6.

An Unshakable Kingdom

25 See ^G991 to it that you do not refuse ^G3868 Him who is speaking ^G2980. For if ^G1487 those ^G1565 did not escape ^G1628 when they refused ^G3868 him who warned ^G5537 them on earth ^G1093, [fn]much ^G4183 less ^G3123 will we escape who turn ^G654 away ^G654 from Him who warns from heaven ^G3772.

26 And His voice ^G5456 shook ^G4531 the earth ^G1093 then ^G5119, but now ^G3568 He has promised ^G1861, saying ^G3004, “YET ^G2089 ONCE ^G530 MORE ^G530 I WILL SHAKE ^G4579 NOT ONLY ^G3440 THE EARTH ^G1093, BUT ALSO ^G2532 THE HEAVEN ^G3772.” 27 Now this ^G3588 expression, “Yet ^G2089 once ^G530 more ^G530,” indicates ^G1213 the removing ^G3331 of those ^G3588 things which can be shaken ^G4531, as of created ^G4160 things ^G4160, so ^G2443 that those ^G3588 things which cannot ^G3361 be shaken ^G4531 may remain ^G3306. 28 Therefore ^G1352, since we are receiving ^G3880 a kingdom ^G932 which cannot ^G761 be ^G761 shaken ^G761, let us [fn]show ^G2192 gratitude ^G5485, by which ^G3739 we may offer ^G3000 to God ^G2316 an acceptable ^G2102 service ^G3000 with reverence ^G2124 and awe ^G6015; 29 for OUR GOD ^G2316 IS A CONSUMING ^G2654 FIRE ^G4442.
