Isaiah 49 – Legacy Standard Bible (LSB)

I Will Give You as a Light of the Nations

1 Listen ^H8085 to Me, O coastlands ^H339,

And pay ^H7181 attention ^H7181, you peoples ^H3816 from afar ^H7350.

Yahweh ^H3068 called ^H7121 Me from the womb ^H990;

From the [fn]body ^H4578 of My mother ^H517 He made My name ^H8034 to be remembered ^H2142.

2 He has set ^H7760 My mouth ^H6310 like a sharp ^H2299 sword ^H2719;

In the shadow ^H6738 of His hand ^H3027 He has concealed ^H2244 Me;

And He has also set ^H7760 Me as a [fn]select ^H1305 arrow ^H2671;

He has hidden ^H5641 Me in His quiver ^H827.

3 He said ^H559 to Me, “You are My Servant ^H5650, Israel ^H3478,

In Whom ^H834 I will [fn]show ^H6286 forth My beautiful ^H6286 glory ^H6286.”

4 But I said ^H559, “I have toiled ^H3021 in vain ^H7385;

I have spent ^H3615 My might ^H3581 for [fn]nothing ^H8414 and vanity ^H1892;

Yet surely ^H403 the justice ^H4941 due to Me is with Yahweh ^H3068,

And My reward ^H6468 with My God ^H430.”

5 So now ^H6258 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068, who formed ^H3335 Me from the womb ^H990 to be His Servant ^H5650,

To return ^H7725 Jacob ^H3290 back ^H7725 to Him, so that Israel ^H3478 might be gathered ^H622 to Him

(For I am glorified ^H3513 in the sight ^H5869 of Yahweh ^H3068,

And My God ^H430 is My strength ^H5797),

6 He says ^H559, “It is too ^H4480 [fn]small ^H7043 a ^H7043 thing ^H7043 that You should be My Servant ^H5650

To raise ^H6965 up ^H6965 the tribes ^H7626 of Jacob ^H3290 and to cause ^H7725 the preserved ^H5336 ones of Israel ^H3478 to return ^H7725;

I will also give ^H5414 You as a light ^H216 [fn]of the nations ^H1471

So that My salvation ^H3444 may [fn]reach ^H1961 to the end ^H7097 of the earth ^H776.”

7 Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068, the Redeemer ^H1350 of Israel ^H3478 and its Holy ^H6918 One ^H6918,

To the despised ^H960 One,

To the One abhorred ^H8581 by the nation ^H1471,

To the Servant ^H5650 of rulers ^H4910,

“Kings ^H4428 will see ^H7200 and arise ^H6965,

Princes ^H8269 will also bow ^H2331 down ^H2331,

Because ^H4616 of Yahweh ^H3068 who ^H834 is faithful ^H539, the Holy ^H6918 One ^H6918 of Israel ^H3478 who has chosen ^H977 You.”

8 Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068,

“In an acceptable ^H7522 time ^H6256 I have answered ^H6030 You,

And in a day ^H3117 of salvation ^H3444 I have helped ^H5826 You;

And I will guard ^H5341 You and give ^H5414 You for a covenant ^H1285 of the people ^H5971,

To establish ^H6965 the land ^H776, to make ^H5157 them inherit ^H5157 the desolate ^H8074 [fn]inheritance ^H5159;

9 Saying ^H559 to those who are bound ^H631, ‘Go ^H3318 forth ^H3318,’

To those who ^H834 are in darkness ^H2822, ‘[fn]Show ^H1540 yourselves.’

Along ^H5921 the roads ^H1870 they will [fn]feed ^H7462,

And their pasture ^H4830 will be on all ^H3605 bare ^H8205 heights ^H8205.

10 “They will not hunger ^H7456 or thirst ^H6770,

Nor ^H3808 will the scorching ^H8273 heat ^H8273 or sun ^H8121 strike ^H5221 them down ^H5221;

For He who has ^H7355 compassion ^H7355 on ^H7355 them will guide ^H5090 them

And will lead ^H5095 them to springs ^H4002 of water ^H4325.

11 “I will set ^H7760 all ^H3605 My mountains ^H2022 as a road ^H1870,

And My highways ^H4546 will be raised ^H7311 up ^H7311.

12 “Behold ^H2009, these ^H428 will come ^H935 from afar ^H7350;

And behold ^H2009, these ^H428 will come from the north ^H6828 and from the west ^H3220,

And these ^H428 from the land ^H776 of Sinim ^H5515.”

13 Shout ^H7442 for ^H7442 joy ^H7442, O heavens ^H8064! And rejoice ^H1523, O earth ^H776!

Break ^H6476 forth ^H6476 into joyful ^H7440 shouting ^H7440, O mountains ^H2022!

For Yahweh ^H3068 has comforted ^H5162 His people ^H5971

And will have ^H7355 compassion ^H7355 on ^H7355 His afflicted ^H6041.

Promise to Zion

14 But Zion ^H6726 said ^H559, “Yahweh ^H3068 has forsaken ^H5800 me,

And the Lord ^H136 has forgotten ^H7911 me.”

15 “Can a woman ^H802 forget ^H7911 her infant ^H5764

And have ^H7355 no ^H4480 compassion ^H7355 on ^H7355 the son ^H1121 of her womb ^H990?

Even ^H1571 these ^H428 may forget ^H7911, but I will not forget ^H7911 you.

16 “Behold ^H2005, I have inscribed ^H2710 you on the palms ^H3709 of My hands;

Your walls ^H2346 are continually ^H8548 before ^H5048 Me.

17 “Your [fn]builders ^H1121 hurry ^H4116;

Your destroyers ^H2040 and devastators ^H2717

Will depart ^H3318 from you.

18 “Lift ^H5375 up ^H5375 your eyes ^H5869 and look ^H7200 around ^H5439;

All ^H3605 of them gather ^H6908 together; they come ^H935 to you.

As I live ^H2416,” declares ^H5002 Yahweh ^H3068,

“You will surely ^H3588 put ^H3847 on ^H3847 all ^H3605 of them as [fn]jewels ^H5716 and bind ^H7194 them on as a bride ^H3618.

19 “For your [fn]devastated ^H2723 and desolate ^H8074 places and your destroyed ^H2035 land ^H776—

Surely ^H3588 now ^H6258 you will be ^H6887 too ^H4480 cramped ^H6887 for the inhabitants ^H3427,

And those who swallowed ^H1104 you will be ^H7368 far ^H7368 away ^H7368.

20 “The children ^H1121 of [fn]whom you were bereaved ^H7923 will yet ^H5750 say ^H559 in your ears ^H241,

‘The place ^H4725 is too cramped ^H6862 for me;

Make ^H5066 room ^H5066 for me that I may live ^H3427 here.’

21 “Then you will say ^H559 in your heart ^H3824,

‘Who ^H4310 has borne ^H3205 these ^H428 for me?

Indeed, I have been ^H7921 bereaved ^H7909 of ^H7909 my children ^H7909

And am barren ^H1565, an exile ^H1540 and a wanderer ^H5493.

And who ^H4310 has reared ^H1431 these ^H428?

Behold ^H2005, I remained ^H7604 alone ^H905;

[fn]From where ^H375 did these ^H428 come?’”

22 Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Lord ^H136 Yahweh ^H3068,

“Behold ^H2009, I will lift ^H5375 up ^H5375 My hand ^H3027 to the nations ^H1471

And make high ^H7311 My standard ^H5251 to the peoples ^H5971;

And they will bring ^H935 your sons ^H1121 in their bosom ^H2684,

And your daughters ^H1323 will be lifted ^H5375 up ^H5375 on their shoulders ^H3802.

23 “Kings ^H4428 will be your guardians ^H539,

And their princesses ^H8282 your nurses ^H3243.

They will bow ^H2331 down ^H2331 to you with their [fn]faces ^H639 to the earth ^H776

And lick ^H3897 the dust ^H6083 of your feet ^H7272;

And you will know ^H3045 that I am Yahweh ^H3068;

Those who ^H834 hope ^H6960 in Me will not be put ^H954 to ^H954 shame ^H954.

24 “Can the prey ^H4455 be taken ^H3947 from the mighty ^H1368 man ^H1368,

Or ^H518 the captives ^H7628 of the [fn]righteous be granted escape ^H4422?”

25 Surely ^H3588, thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068,

“Even ^H1571 the captives ^H7628 of the mighty ^H1368 man ^H1368 will be taken ^H3947 away,

And the prey ^H4455 of the tyrant ^H6184 will be granted escape ^H4422;

For I will contend ^H7378 with the one ^H3401 who ^H3401 contends ^H3401 with you,

And I will save ^H3467 your sons ^H1121.

26 “I will feed ^H398 those who mistreat ^H3238 you with their own flesh ^H1320,

And they will become ^H7937 drunk ^H7937 with their own blood ^H1818 as with sweet ^H6071 wine ^H6071;

And all ^H3605 flesh ^H1320 will know ^H3045 that I, Yahweh ^H3068, am your Savior ^H3467

And your Redeemer ^H1350, the Mighty ^H46 One ^H46 of Jacob ^H3290.”
