Satan Strikes Job’s Flesh
1 Again it was the day H3117 that the sons H1121 of God H430 came H935 to stand H3320 before H5921 Yahweh H3068, and Satan H7854 also H1571 came H935 among H8432 them to stand H3320 himself before H5921 Yahweh H3068.
2 And Yahweh H3068 said H559 to Satan H7854, “Where H335 do you come H935 from?” Then Satan H7854 answered H6030 Yahweh H3068 and said H559, “From roaming H7751 about H7751 on the earth H776 and walking H1980 around H1980 on it.” 3 And Yahweh H3068 said H559 to Satan H7854, “Have you set H7760 your heart H3820 upon H5921 My servant H5650 Job H347? For there H369 is H369 no H369 one H369 like H3644 him on the earth H776, a blameless H8535 and upright H3477 man H376, [fn]fearing H3372 God H430 and turning H5493 away H5493 from evil H7451. And he still H5750 holds H2388 fast H2388 his integrity H8538. So you incited H5496 Me against him to swallow H1104 him up in H2600 vain H2600.” 4 Satan H7854 answered H6030 Yahweh H3068 and said H559, “Skin H5785 for skin H5785! Yes, all H3605 that a man H376 has he will give H5414 for his life H5315. 5 However H199, send H7971 forth H7971 Your hand H3027 now H4994, and touch H5060 his bone H6106 and his flesh H1320; he will curse H1288 You in Your face H6440.” 6 So Yahweh H3068 said H559 to Satan H7854, “Behold H2009, he is in your hand H3027, only H389 spare H8104 his life H5315.”
7 Then Satan H7854 went H3318 out H3318 from the presence H6440 of Yahweh H3068 and struck H5221 Job H347 with terrible H7451 boils H7822 from the sole H3709 of his foot H7272 to the top H6936 of H6936 his head H6936. 8 And he took H3947 a potsherd H2789 to scrape H1623 himself while he was sitting H3427 among H8432 the ashes H665.
9 Then his wife H802 said H559 to him, “Do you still H5750 hold H2388 fast H2388 your integrity H8538? Curse H1288 God H430 and die H4191!” 10 But he said H559 to her, “You speak H1696 as one H259 of the wickedly H5036 foolish H5036 women H5036 speaks H1696. Shall we indeed H1571 accept H6901 good H2896 from God H430 and not accept H6901 calamity H7451?” In all H3605 this H2088 Job H347 did not sin H2398 with his lips H8193.
Job’s Three Friends
11 Then Job’s H347 three H7969 friends H7453 heard H8085 of all H3605 this H2088 calamity H7451 that had come H935 upon him. So they came H935 each H376 one H376 from his own place H4725, Eliphaz H464 the Temanite H8489, Bildad H1085 the Shuhite H7747, and Zophar H6691 the Naamathite H5284; and they made H3259 an H3259 appointment H3259 together H3162 to come H935 to console H5110 him and comfort H5162 him.
12 Then they lifted H5375 up H5375 their eyes H5869 at a distance H7350 and did not recognize H5234 him, and they lifted H5375 up H5375 their voices H6963 and wept H1058. And each H376 of them tore H7167 his robe H4598, and they threw H2236 dust H6083 over H5921 their heads H7218 toward the sky H8064. 13 Then they sat H3427 down H3427 on the ground H776 with him for seven H7651 days H3117 and seven H7651 nights H3915 with no H369 one H369 speaking H1696 a word H1697 to him, for they saw H7200 that his pain H3511 was H1431 very H3966 great H1431.
