An Adulteress Forgiven

1 But Jesus ^G2424 went ^G4198 to the Mount ^G3735 of Olives ^G1636.

2 Early ^G3722 in ^G3722 the ^G3722 morning ^G3722 He came ^G3854 again ^G3825 into the temple ^G2413, and all ^G3956 the people ^G2992 were coming ^G2064 to Him; and He sat ^G2523 down ^G2523 and began to teach ^G1321 them. 3 The scribes ^G1122 and the Pharisees ^G5330 *brought ^G71 a woman ^G1135 caught ^G2638 in adultery ^G3430, and having set ^G2476 her in the center ^G3319 of the court, 4 they *said ^G3004 to Him, “Teacher ^G1320, this ^G3778 woman ^G1135 has been caught ^G2638 in adultery ^G3431, in the very ^G1888 act ^G1888. 5 Now ^G1161 in the Law ^G3551 Moses ^G3475 commanded ^G1781 us to stone ^G3034 such ^G5108 women ^G5108; what ^G5101 then ^G3767 do You say ^G3004?” 6 They were saying ^G3004 this ^G3778, testing ^G3985 Him, so ^G2443 that they might have ^G2192 evidence to accuse ^G2723 Him. But Jesus ^G2424 stooped ^G2955 down ^G2736 and with His finger ^G1147 wrote ^G6047 on the ground ^G1093. 7 But when ^G5613 they persisted ^G1961 in asking ^G2065 Him, He straightened ^G352 up ^G352 and said ^G3004 to them, “Let him who is without ^G361 sin ^G361 among you be the first ^G4413 to throw ^G906 a stone ^G3037 at her.” 8 Again ^G3825 He stooped ^G6049 down ^G6049 and wrote ^G1125 on the ground ^G1093. 9 When they heard ^G191 it, they began ^G756 to go ^G1831 out ^G1831 one ^G1520 by one ^G1520, beginning ^G757 with the older ^G4245 ones ^G4245, and He was left ^G2641 alone ^G3441, and the woman ^G1135, where she was, in the center ^G3319 of the court. 10 Straightening ^G352 up ^G352, Jesus ^G2424 said ^G3004 to her, “Woman ^G1135, where ^G4226 are they? I Am the Light of the World

12 Then ^G3767 Jesus ^G2424 again ^G3825 spoke ^G2980 to them, saying ^G3004, “I am ^G1510 the Light ^G5457 of the world ^G2889; he who follows ^G190 Me will never walk ^G4043 in the darkness ^G4653, but will have ^G2192 the Light ^G5457 of life ^G2222.”

13 So ^G3767 the Pharisees ^G5330 said ^G3004 to Him, “You are bearing ^G3140 witness ^G3140 about ^G4012 Yourself ^G4572; Your witness ^G3141 is not [fn]true ^G227.” 14 Jesus ^G2424 answered ^G611 and said ^G3004 to them, “Even ^G2579 if ^G2579 I bear ^G3140 witness ^G3140 about ^G4012 Myself ^G1683, My witness ^G3141 is [fn]true ^G227, for I know ^G6063 where ^G4159 I came ^G2064 from and where ^G4226 I am going ^G5217; but you do not know ^G6063 where ^G4159 I come ^G2064 from or ^G2228 where ^G4226 I am going ^G5217. 15 You judge ^G2919 [fn]according ^G2596 to the flesh ^G4561; I am not judging ^G2919 anyone ^G3762. 16 But even ^G2532 if ^G1437 I do judge ^G2919, My judgment ^G2920 is true ^G228; for I am ^G1510 not alone ^G3441 in it, but I and the Father who sent ^G3992 Me. 17 Even ^G2532 in your law ^G3551 it has been written ^G1125 that the witness ^G3141 of two ^G1417 men ^G444 is [fn]true ^G227. 18 I am ^G1510 He who bears ^G3140 witness ^G3140 about ^G4012 Myself ^G1683, and the Father ^G3962 who sent ^G3992 Me bears ^G3140 witness ^G3140 about ^G4012 Me.” 19 So ^G3767 they were saying ^G3004 to Him, “Where ^G4226 is Your Father ^G3962?” Jesus ^G2424 answered ^G611, “You know ^G6063 neither ^G3777 Me nor ^G3777 My Father ^G3962; if ^G1487 you knew ^G6063 Me, you would know ^G6063 My Father ^G3962 also ^G2532.” 20 These ^G3778 words ^G4487 He spoke ^G2980 in the treasury ^G1049, as He was teaching ^G1321 in the temple ^G2413; and no ^G3762 one ^G3762 seized ^G4084 Him, because ^G3754 His hour ^G5610 had not yet ^G3768 come ^G2064.

21 Then ^G3767 He said ^G3004 again ^G3825 to them, “I am going ^G5217 away ^G5217, and you will seek ^G2212 Me, and will die ^G599 in your sin ^G266. Where ^G3699 I am going ^G5217, you cannot ^G1410 G3756 come ^G2064.” 22 So ^G3767 the Jews ^G2453 were saying ^G3004, “Surely ^G3385 He will not kill ^G615 Himself ^G1438, since ^G3754 He says ^G3004, ‘Where ^G3699 I am going ^G5217, you cannot ^G1410 G3756 come ^G2064’?” 23 And He was saying ^G3004 to them, “You are from below ^G2736, I am ^G1510 from above ^G507. You are of this ^G3778 world ^G2889, I am ^G1510 not of this ^G3778 world ^G2889. 24 Therefore ^G3767 I said ^G3004 to you that you will die ^G599 in your sins ^G266. For unless ^G1437 G3361 you believe ^G4100 that [fn]I am ^G1510 He, you will die ^G599 in your sins ^G266.” 25 So ^G3767 they were saying ^G3004 to Him, “Who ^G5101 are You?” Jesus ^G2424 said ^G3004 to them, “[fn]What ^G3739 G5101 have I been saying ^G2980 to you from the beginning ^G746? 26 I have ^G2192 many ^G4183 things ^G4183 to say ^G2980 and to judge ^G2919 concerning ^G4012 you, but He who sent ^G3992 Me is true ^G227; and the things which ^G3739 I heard ^G191 from Him, these ^G3778 I am saying ^G2980 to the world ^G2889.” 27 They did not know ^G1097 that He had been speaking ^G3004 to them about the Father ^G3962. 28 So ^G3767 Jesus ^G2424 said ^G3004, “When ^G3752 you lift ^G5312 up ^G5312 the Son ^G5207 of Man ^G444, then ^G5119 you will know ^G1097 that [fn]I am ^G1510 He, and I do ^G4160 nothing ^G3762 from Myself ^G1683, but I speak ^G2980 these ^G3778 things ^G3778 as the Father ^G3962 taught ^G1321 Me. 29 And He who sent ^G3992 Me is with Me; He [fn]has not left ^G863 Me alone ^G3441, for I always ^G3842 do ^G4160 the things ^G701 that ^G701 are ^G701 pleasing ^G701 to Him.” 30 As He was speaking ^G2980 these ^G3778 things ^G3778, many ^G4183 believed ^G4100 in Him.

The Son Will Make You Free

31 So ^G3767 Jesus ^G2424 was saying ^G3004 to those ^G3588 Jews ^G2453 who had believed ^G4100 Him, “If ^G1437 you abide ^G3306 in ^G1437 My word ^G3056, then you are truly ^G230 My ^G1473 disciples ^G3101;

32 and you will know ^G1097 the truth ^G225, and the truth ^G225 will make ^G1659 you free ^G1659.” 33 They answered ^G611 Him, “We are Abraham’s ^G11 seed ^G4690 and have never ^G3762 G4455 yet ^G4455 been enslaved ^G1398 to anyone ^G3762. How ^G4459 is it that You say ^G3004, ‘You will become ^G1096 free ^G1658’?”

34 Jesus ^G2424 answered ^G611 them, “Truly ^G281, truly ^G281, I say ^G3004 to you, everyone ^G3956 who commits ^G4160 sin ^G266 is the slave ^G1401 of sin ^G266. 35 And the slave ^G1401 does not remain ^G3306 in the house ^G3614 forever ^G165; the son ^G5207 does remain ^G3306 forever ^G165. 36 So ^G3767 if ^G1437 the Son ^G5207 makes ^G1659 you free ^G1659, you will be free ^G1658 indeed ^G3689. 37 I know ^G6063 that you are Abraham’s ^G11 seed ^G4690; yet ^G235 you are seeking ^G2212 to kill ^G615 Me, because ^G3754 My word ^G3056 [fn]has ^G5562 no ^G3756 place ^G5562 in you. 38 I speak ^G2980 the things which ^G3739 I have seen ^G3708 [fn]with My Father ^G3962; therefore ^G3767 you also ^G2532 do ^G4160 the things which ^G3739 you heard ^G191 from your father ^G3962.”

39 They answered ^G611 and said ^G3004 to Him, “Abraham ^G11 is our father ^G3962.” Jesus ^G2424 *said ^G3004 to them, “If ^G1487 you are Abraham’s ^G11 children ^G5043, you would do ^G4160 the deeds ^G2041 of Abraham ^G11. 40 But now you are seeking ^G2212 to kill ^G615 Me, a man ^G444 who ^G3739 has told ^G2980 you the truth ^G225, which ^G3739 I heard ^G191 from God ^G2316. This ^G3778 Abraham ^G11 did not do ^G4160. 41 You are doing ^G4160 the deeds ^G2041 of your father ^G3962.” They said ^G3004 to Him, “We were not born ^G1080 of sexual ^G4202 immorality ^G4202; we have ^G2192 one ^G1520 Father ^G3962: God ^G2316.” 42 Jesus ^G2424 said ^G3004 to them, “If ^G1487 God ^G2316 were your Father ^G3962, you would love ^G25 Me, for I proceeded ^G1831 forth ^G1831 and have ^G2240 come ^G2240 from God ^G2316, for I have not even ^G3761 come ^G2064 of Myself ^G1683, but [fn]He sent ^G649 Me. 43 Why ^G1223 G5101 do you not understand ^G1097 [fn]what ^G2981 I am saying ^G2981? It is because ^G3754 you cannot ^G1410 G3756 hear ^G191 My word ^G3056. 44 You are of your father ^G3962 the devil ^G1228, and you want ^G2309 to do ^G4160 the desires ^G1939 of your father ^G3962. He was a murderer ^G443 from the beginning ^G746, and does not stand ^G4739 in the truth ^G225 because ^G3754 there is no ^G3756 truth ^G225 in him. Whenever ^G3752 he speaks ^G2980 [fn]a lie ^G5579, he speaks ^G2980 from his own ^G2398 nature, for he is a liar ^G5583 and the father ^G3962 of [fn]lies ^G846. 45 But because ^G3754 I speak ^G3004 the truth ^G225, you do not believe ^G4100 Me. 46 Which ^G5101 one ^G5101 of you convicts ^G1651 Me of sin ^G266? If ^G1487 I speak ^G3004 truth ^G225, why ^G1223 G5101 do you not believe ^G4100 Me? 47 He who is of God ^G2316 hears ^G191 the words ^G4487 of God ^G2316; for this ^G3778 reason ^G1223 you do not hear ^G191 them, because ^G3754 you are not of God ^G2316.”

48 The Jews ^G2453 answered ^G611 and said ^G3004 to Him, “Do we not say ^G3004 rightly ^G2573 that You are a Samaritan ^G4541 and have ^G2192 a demon ^G1140?” 49 Jesus ^G2424 answered ^G611, “I do not have ^G2192 a demon ^G1140, but I honor ^G5091 My Father ^G3962, and you dishonor ^G818 Me. 50 But I do not seek ^G2212 My glory ^G1391; there is One who seeks ^G2212 and judges ^G2919. 51 Truly ^G281, truly ^G281, I say ^G3004 to you, if ^G1437 anyone ^G5100 keeps ^G5083 My word ^G3056 he will never ^G3756 G3361 see ^G2334 death ^G2288—ever ^{G1519 G3588 G165}.” 52 The Jews ^G2453 said ^G3004 to Him, “Now ^G3568 we know ^G1097 that You have ^G2192 a demon ^G1140. Abraham ^G11 died ^G599, and the prophets ^G4396 also; and You say ^G3004, ‘If ^G1437 anyone ^G5100 keeps ^G5083 My word ^G3056, he will never ^G3756 G3361 taste ^G1089 of death ^G2288—ever ^{G1519 G3588 G165}.’ 53 Surely ^G3361 You are not greater ^G3173 than our father ^G3962 Abraham ^G11 who ^G3748 died ^G599? The prophets ^G4396 died ^G599 too ^G2532; whom ^G5101 do You make ^G4160 Yourself ^G4572 out ^G4160 to be?” 54 Jesus ^G2424 answered ^G611, “If ^G1437 I glorify ^G1392 Myself ^G1683, My glory ^G1391 is nothing ^G3762; it is My Father ^G3962 who glorifies ^G1392 Me, of whom ^G3739 you say ^G3004, ‘He is our God ^G2316’; 55 and you have not known ^G1097 Him, but I know ^G6063 Him; and if ^G2579 I say ^G3004 that I do not know ^G6063 Him, I will be a liar ^G5583 like ^G3664 you, but I do know ^G6063 Him and keep ^G5083 His word ^G3056. 56 Your father ^G3962 Abraham ^G11 rejoiced ^G21 [fn]to see ^G3708 My day ^G2250, and he saw ^G3708 it and was glad ^G5463.” 57 So ^G3767 the Jews ^G2453 said ^G3004 to Him, “You are not yet ^G3768 fifty ^G4004 years ^G2094 old, and have You seen ^G3708 Abraham ^G11?” 58 Jesus ^G2424 said ^G3004 to them, “Truly ^G281, truly ^G281, I say ^G3004 to you, before ^G4250 Abraham ^G11 was ^G1096, I am ^G1510.” 59 Therefore ^G3767 they picked ^G142 up ^G142 stones ^G3037 to throw ^G906 at Him, but Jesus ^G2424 [fn]hid ^G2928 Himself and went ^G1831 out ^G1831 of the temple ^G2413.
