Joshua Gathers Israel

1 Then Joshua ^H3091 gathered ^H622 all ^H3605 the tribes ^H7626 of Israel ^H3478 to Shechem ^H7927 and called ^H7121 for the elders ^H2205 of Israel ^H3478 and for their heads ^H7218 and their judges ^H8199 and their officers ^H7860; and they presented ^H3320 themselves before ^H6440 God ^H430.

2 And Joshua ^H3091 said ^H559 to all ^H3605 the people ^H5971, “Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068, the God ^H430 of Israel ^H3478, ‘From ancient ^H5769 times ^H5769 your fathers ^H1 lived ^H3427 beyond ^H5676 the [fn]River ^H5104, namely, Terah ^H8646, the father ^H1 of Abraham ^H85 and the father ^H1 of Nahor ^H5152, and they served ^H5647 other ^H312 gods ^H430. 3 Then I took ^H3947 your father ^H1 Abraham ^H85 from beyond ^H4480 H5676 the [fn]River ^H5104 and led ^H1980 him through all ^H3605 the land ^H776 of Canaan ^H3667 and multiplied ^H7235 his seed ^H2233 and gave ^H5414 him Isaac ^H3327. 4 To Isaac ^H3327 I gave ^H5414 Jacob ^H3290 and Esau ^H6215, and to Esau ^H6215 I gave ^H5414 Mount ^H2022 Seir ^H8165 to possess ^H3423 it; but Jacob ^H3290 and his sons ^H1121 went ^H3381 down ^H3381 to Egypt ^H4714. 5 Then I sent ^H7971 Moses ^H4872 and Aaron ^H175, and I smote ^H5062 Egypt ^H4714 [fn]by what ^H834 I did ^H6213 in its midst ^H7130; and afterward ^H310 I brought ^H3318 you out ^H3318. 6 And I brought ^H3318 your fathers ^H1 out ^H3318 of Egypt ^H4714, and you came ^H935 to the sea ^H3220; and Egypt ^H4714 pursued ^H7291 your fathers ^H1 with chariots ^H7393 and horsemen ^H6571 to the [fn]Red ^H5488 Sea ^H3220. 7 Then they cried ^H6817 out ^H6817 to Yahweh ^H3068; He put ^H7760 darkness ^H3990 between ^H996 you and the Egyptians ^H4713 and brought ^H935 the sea ^H3220 upon them and covered ^H3680 them; and your own eyes ^H5869 saw ^H7200 what ^H834 I did ^H6213 in Egypt ^H4714. And you lived ^H3427 in the wilderness ^H4057 for many ^H7227 days ^H3117. 8 Then I brought ^H935 you into the land ^H776 of the Amorites ^H567 who lived ^H3427 beyond ^H5676 the Jordan ^H3383, and they fought ^H3898 with you; and I gave ^H5414 them into your hand ^H3027, and you took ^H3423 possession ^H3423 of their land ^H776, and I destroyed ^H8045 them before ^H6440 you. 9 Then Balak ^H1111 the son ^H1121 of Zippor ^H6834, king ^H4428 of Moab ^H4124, arose ^H6965 and fought ^H3898 against Israel ^H3478, and he sent ^H7971 and summoned ^H7121 Balaam ^H1109 the son ^H1121 of Beor ^H1160 to curse ^H7043 you. 10 But I was ^H14 not willing ^H14 to listen ^H8085 to Balaam ^H1109. So he blessed ^H1288 you repeatedly ^H1288, and I delivered ^H5337 you from his hand ^H3027. 11 And you crossed ^H5674 the Jordan ^H3383 and came ^H935 to Jericho ^H3405; and the citizens ^H1167 of Jericho ^H3405 fought ^H3898 against you, and the Amorite ^H567 and the Perizzite ^H6522 and the Canaanite ^H3669 and the Hittite ^H2850 and the Girgashite ^H1622, the Hivite ^H2340 and the Jebusite ^H2983. Thus I gave ^H5414 them into your hand ^H3027. 12 Then I sent ^H7971 the hornet ^H6880 before ^H6440 you, and it [fn]drove ^H1644 out ^H1644 the two ^H8147 kings ^H4428 of the Amorites ^H567 from before ^H4480 H6440 you, but not by your sword ^H2719 or your bow ^H7198. 13 And I gave ^H5414 you a land ^H776 on which ^H834 you had not labored ^H3021 and cities ^H5892 which ^H834 you had not built ^H1129, and you have lived ^H3427 in them; you are eating ^H398 of vineyards ^H3754 and olive ^H2132 groves ^H2132 which ^H834 you did not plant ^H5193.’

We Will Serve Yahweh Our God

14 “So now ^H6258, [fn]fear ^H3372 Yahweh ^H3068 and serve ^H5647 Him in integrity ^H8549 and [fn]truth ^H571; and put ^H5493 away ^H5493 the gods ^H430 which ^H834 your fathers ^H1 served ^H5647 beyond ^H5676 the [fn]River ^H5104 and in Egypt ^H4714, and serve ^H5647 Yahweh ^H3068.

15 If ^H518 it is evil ^H7451 in your sight ^H5869 to serve ^H5647 Yahweh ^H3068, choose ^H977 for yourselves today ^H3117 whom ^H4310 you will serve ^H5647: whether ^H518 the gods ^H430 which ^H834 your fathers ^H1 served ^H5647 which ^H834 were beyond ^H5676 the River ^H5104 or the gods ^H430 of the Amorites ^H567 in whose ^H834 land ^H776 you are living ^H3427; but as for me and my house ^H1004, we will serve ^H5647 Yahweh ^H3068.”

16 And the people ^H5971 answered ^H6030 and said ^H559, “Far ^H2486 be it from us that we should forsake ^H5800 Yahweh ^H3068 to serve ^H5647 other ^H312 gods ^H430; 17 for Yahweh ^H3068 our God ^H430 is He who brought ^H5927 us and our fathers ^H1 up ^H5927 out of the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714, from the house ^H1004 of slavery ^H5650, and who ^H834 did ^H6213 these ^H428 great ^H1419 signs ^H226 in our sight ^H5869 and kept ^H8104 us through all ^H3605 the way ^H1870 in which ^H834 we went ^H1980 and among all ^H3605 the peoples ^H5971 through whose ^H834 midst ^H7130 we passed ^H5674. 18 And Yahweh ^H3068 drove ^H1644 out ^H1644 from before ^H6440 us all ^H3605 the peoples ^H5971, even the Amorites ^H567 who lived ^H3427 in the land ^H776. We also ^H1571 will serve ^H5647 Yahweh ^H3068, for He is our God ^H430.”

19 Then Joshua ^H3091 said ^H559 to the people ^H5971, “You will not be ^H3201 able ^H3201 to serve ^H5647 Yahweh ^H3068, for He is a holy ^H6918 God ^H430. He is a jealous ^H7072 God ^H410; He will not forgive ^H5375 your transgression ^H6588 or your sins ^H2403. 20 If ^H3588 you forsake ^H5800 Yahweh ^H3068 and serve ^H5647 foreign ^H5236 gods ^H430, then He will turn ^H7725 and do ^H7489 you harm ^H7489 and consume ^H3615 you after ^H310 He has done ^H3190 good ^H3190 to you.” 21 And the people ^H5971 said ^H559 to Joshua ^H3091, “No ^H3808, but we will serve ^H5647 Yahweh ^H3068.” 22 And Joshua ^H3091 said ^H559 to the people ^H5971, “You are witnesses ^H5707 against yourselves that you have chosen ^H977 for yourselves Yahweh ^H3068, to serve ^H5647 Him.” And they said ^H559, “We are witnesses ^H5707.” 23 “So now ^H6258, put ^H5493 away ^H5493 the foreign ^H5236 gods ^H430 which ^H834 are in your midst ^H7130, and incline ^H5186 your hearts ^H3824 to Yahweh ^H3068, the God ^H430 of Israel ^H3478.” 24 And the people ^H5971 said ^H559 to Joshua ^H3091, “We will serve ^H5647 Yahweh ^H3068 our God ^H430, and we will listen ^H8085 to His voice ^H6963.” 25 So Joshua ^H3091 cut ^H3772 a covenant ^H1285 with the people ^H5971 that day ^H3117 and made ^H7760 for them a statute ^H2706 and a judgment ^H4941 in Shechem ^H7927. 26 And Joshua ^H3091 wrote ^H3789 these ^H428 words ^H1697 in the book ^H5612 of the law ^H8451 of God ^H430; and he took ^H3947 a large ^H1419 stone ^H68 and set ^H6965 it up ^H6965 there ^H8033 under ^H8478 the oak ^H427 that was by the sanctuary ^H4720 of Yahweh ^H3068. 27 And Joshua ^H3091 said ^H559 to all ^H3605 the people ^H5971, “Behold ^H2009, this ^H2088 stone ^H68 shall be for a witness ^H5713 against us, for it has heard ^H8085 all ^H3605 the words ^H561 of Yahweh ^H3068 which ^H834 He spoke ^H1696 [fn]to us; thus it shall be for a witness ^H5713 against you, lest ^H6435 you deny ^H3584 your God ^H430.” 28 Then Joshua ^H3091 dismissed ^H7971 the people ^H5971, each ^H376 to his inheritance ^H5159.

Joshua’s Death and Burial

29 Now it happened ^H1961 that after ^H310 these ^H428 things ^H1697, Joshua ^H3091 the son ^H1121 of Nun ^H5126, the servant ^H5650 of Yahweh ^H3068, died ^H4191, being 110 ^H3967 H6235 years ^H8141 old ^H1121.

30 And they buried ^H6912 him in the territory ^H1366 of his inheritance ^H5159 in Timnath-serah ^H8556, which ^H834 is in the hill ^H2022 country ^H2022 of Ephraim ^H669, on the north ^H6828 of Mount ^H2022 Gaash ^H1608.

31 And Israel ^H3478 served ^H5647 Yahweh ^H3068 all ^H3605 the days ^H3117 of Joshua ^H3091 and all ^H3605 the days ^H3117 of the elders ^H2205 who ^H834 [fn]survived ^{H748 H3117 H310} Joshua ^H3091, who knew ^H3045 all ^H3605 the work ^H4639 of Yahweh ^H3068 which ^H834 He had done ^H6213 for Israel ^H3478.

32 Now they buried ^H6912 the bones ^H6106 of Joseph ^H3130, which ^H834 the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 brought ^H5927 up ^H5927 from Egypt ^H4714, at Shechem ^H7927, in the portion ^H2513 of the field ^H7704 which ^H834 Jacob ^H3290 had bought ^H7069 from the sons ^H1121 of Hamor ^H2544 the father ^H1 of Shechem ^H7927 for one hundred ^H3967 [fn]qesitah ^H7192; and they became ^H1961 the inheritance ^H5159 of Joseph’s ^H3130 sons ^H1121. 33 And Eleazar ^H499 the son ^H1121 of Aaron ^H175 died ^H4191; and they buried ^H6912 him [fn]at Gibeah ^H1390 of Phinehas ^H6372 his son ^H1121, which ^H834 was given ^H5414 him in the hill ^H2022 country ^H2022 of Ephraim ^H669.
