John the Baptist’s Birth Foretold

5 In the days ^G2250 of Herod ^G2264, king ^G935 of Judea ^G2449, there was a priest ^G2409 named ^G3686 Zechariah ^G2197, of the division ^G2183 of [fn]Abijah ^G7, and he had a wife ^G1135 [fn]from the daughters ^G2364 of Aaron ^G2, and her name ^G3686 was Elizabeth ^G1665.

18 And Zechariah ^G2197 said ^G3004 to the angel ^G32, “How ^G2596 G5101 will I know ^G1097 this ^G3778? For I am ^G1510 an old ^G4246 man ^G4246 and my wife ^G1135 is advanced ^G4260 in [fn]years ^G2250.” 19 And the angel ^G32 answered ^G611 and said ^G3004 to him, “I am ^G1510 Gabriel ^G1043, who stands ^G3936 before ^G1799 God ^G2316, and I was sent ^G649 to speak ^G2980 to you and to bring ^G2097 you this ^G3778 good ^G2097 news ^G2097. 20 And behold ^G2400, you shall be silent ^G4623 and unable ^G3361 G1410 to speak ^G2980 until ^G891 the day ^G2250 when ^G3739 these ^G3778 things ^G3778 take ^G1096 place ^G1096, because ^G473 G3739 you did not believe ^G4100 my words ^G3056, which ^G3748 will be fulfilled ^G4137 in their proper ^G2540 time ^G2540.”

21 And the people ^G2992 were waiting ^G4328 for ^G4328 Zechariah ^G2197, and were ^G2296 wondering ^G2296 at his delay ^G5549 in the sanctuary ^G3485. 22 But when he came ^G1831 out ^G1831, he was unable ^G3756 G1410 to speak ^G2980 to them, and they realized ^G1921 that he had seen ^G3708 a vision ^G3701 in the sanctuary ^G3485. And he kept [fn]making ^G1269 signs ^G1269 to them, and remained ^G1265 mute ^G2974. 23 And ^G2532 it happened ^G1096 that when ^G5613 the days ^G2250 of his priestly ^G3009 service ^G3009 were fulfilled ^G4130, he went ^G565 back ^G565 home ^G3624.

24 After ^G3326 these ^G3778 days ^G2250 Elizabeth ^G1665 his wife ^G1135 conceived ^G4815, and she [fn]kept ^G4032 herself ^G1438 in ^G4032 seclusion ^G4032 for five ^G4002 months ^G3376, saying ^G3004, 25 “This ^G3779 is ^G3779 the ^G3779 way ^G3779 the Lord ^G2962 has dealt ^G4160 with me in the days ^G2250 when ^G3739 He looked ^G1896 upon ^G1896 me to take ^G851 away ^G851 my disgrace ^G3681 among ^G1722 men ^G444.”

Jesus’ Birth Foretold

26 Now ^G1161 in the sixth ^G1623 month ^G3376 the angel ^G32 Gabriel ^G1043 was sent ^G649 from God ^G2316 to a city ^G4172 in ^G649 Galilee ^G1056 called ^G3686 Nazareth ^G3478,

27 to a virgin ^G3933 betrothed ^G3423 to a man ^G435 whose ^G3739 name ^G3686 was Joseph ^G2501, of the [fn]house ^G3624 of David ^G1138, and the virgin’s ^G3933 name ^G3686 was [fn]Mary ^G3137. 28 And coming ^G1525 in ^G1525, he said ^G3004 to her, “Greetings ^G5463, [fn]favored ^G5487 one! The Lord ^G2962 [fn]is with you.” 29 But she was very ^G1298 perplexed ^G1298 at this statement ^G3056, and was pondering ^G1260 what ^G4217 kind ^G4217 of greeting ^G783 this ^G3778 was. 30 And the angel ^G32 said ^G3004 to her, “Do not be ^G5399 afraid ^G5399, Mary ^G3137, for you have found ^G2147 favor ^G5485 with God ^G2316. 31 And behold ^G2400, you will conceive ^G4815 in your womb ^G1064 and bear ^G5088 a son ^G5207, and you shall name ^G3686 Him Jesus ^G2424. 32 [fn]He will be great ^G3173 and will be called ^G2564 the Son ^G5207 of the Most ^G5310 High ^G5310, and the [fn]Lord ^G2962 God ^G2316 will give ^G1325 Him the throne ^G2362 of His father ^G3962 David ^G1138, 33 and He will reign ^G936 over ^G1909 the house ^G3624 of Jacob ^G2384 forever ^G165, and there will be no ^G3756 end ^G5056 of His kingdom ^G932.” 34 But Mary ^G3137 said ^G3004 to the angel ^G32, “How ^G4459 will this ^G3778 be, since ^G1893 I [fn]am a virgin ^{G435 G3756 G1097}?” 35 The angel ^G32 answered ^G611 and said ^G3004 to her, “The Holy ^G40 Spirit ^G4151 will come ^G1904 upon you, and the power ^G1411 of the Most ^G5310 High ^G5310 will overshadow ^G1982 you; and for that reason ^G1352 [fn]the holy ^G40 Child ^G1080 shall be called ^G2564 the Son ^G5207 of God ^G2316. 36 And behold ^G2400, your relative ^G6080 Elizabeth ^G1665 has also ^G2532 conceived ^G4815 a son ^G5207 in her old ^G1094 age ^G1094; and this is the sixth ^G1623 month ^G3376 for her who was called ^G2564 barren ^G4723. 37 For [fn]nothing ^{G3756 G3956 G4487} will be impossible ^G101 with God ^G2316.” 38 And Mary ^G3137 said ^G3004, “Behold ^G2400, the slave ^G1401 of the [fn]Lord ^G2962; may it be done ^G1096 to me according ^G2596 to your word ^G4487.” And the angel ^G32 departed ^G565 from her.

Mary Visits Elizabeth

39 Now ^G1161 [fn]at this ^G3778 time ^G2250 Mary ^G3137 arose ^G450 and went ^G4198 in a hurry ^G4710 to the hill ^G3714 country ^G3714, to a city ^G4172 of Judah ^G2455,

40 and entered ^G1525 the house ^G3624 of Zechariah ^G2197 and greeted ^G782 Elizabeth ^G1665. 41 And ^G2532 it happened ^G1096 that when ^G5613 Elizabeth ^G1665 heard ^G191 Mary’s ^G3137 greeting ^G783, the baby ^G1025 leaped ^G4640 in her womb ^G2836, and Elizabeth ^G1665 was filled ^G4130 with the Holy ^G40 Spirit ^G4151. 42 And she cried ^G400 out ^G400 with a loud ^G3173 voice ^G2906 and said ^G3004, “Blessed ^G2127 are you among ^G1722 women ^G1135, and blessed ^G2127 is the fruit ^G2590 of your womb ^G2836! 43 And [fn]how ^G4159 has it happened to me, that the mother ^G3384 of my Lord ^G2962 would come ^G2064 to me? 44 For behold ^G2400, when ^G5613 the sound ^G5456 of your greeting ^G783 reached ^G1096 my ears ^G3775, the baby ^G1025 leaped ^G4640 in my womb ^G2836 for joy ^G20. 45 And blessed ^G3107 is she who believed ^G4100 [fn]that there would be a fulfillment ^G5050 of what had been spoken ^G2980 to her [fn]by the [fn]Lord ^G2962.”

Mary Magnifies the Lord

46 And Mary ^G3137 said ^G3004:

“My soul ^G5590 magnifies ^G3170 the [fn]Lord ^G2962,

47 And my spirit ^G4151 has rejoiced ^G21 in God ^G2316 my Savior ^G4990.

48 “For He has looked ^G1914 upon the humble ^G5014 state ^G5014 of His slave ^G1401,

For behold ^G2400, from this ^G3568 time ^G3568 on, all ^G3956 generations ^G1074 will count ^G3106 me blessed ^G3106.

49 “For the Mighty ^G1415 One ^G1415 has done ^G4160 great ^G3173 things ^G3173 for me,

And holy ^G40 is His name ^G3686.

50 “AND HIS MERCY ^G1656 IS [fn]UPON GENERATION ^G1074 AFTER ^G2532 GENERATION ^G1074

TOWARD THOSE ^G3588 WHO FEAR ^G5399 HIM.

51 “He has done ^G4160 a mighty ^G2904 deed ^G2904 with His arm ^G1023;

He has scattered ^G1287 those who were proud ^G5244 in the [fn]thoughts ^G1271 of their heart ^G2588.

52 “He has brought ^G2507 down ^G2507 rulers ^G1413 from their thrones ^G2362,

And has exalted ^G5312 those who were humble ^G5011.

53 “HE HAS FILLED ^G1705 THE HUNGRY ^G3983 WITH GOOD ^G18 THINGS ^G18,

And sent ^G1821 away ^G1821 the rich ^G4147 empty-handed ^G2756.

54 “He has given ^G482 help ^G482 to Israel ^G2474 His servant ^G3816,

[fn]In remembrance ^G3403 of His mercy ^G1656,

55 As He spoke ^G2980 to our fathers ^G3962,

To Abraham ^G11 and his seed ^G4690 forever ^G165.”

56 And Mary ^G3137 stayed ^G3306 with her about ^G5613 three ^G5140 months ^G3376, and then returned ^G5290 to her home ^G3624.

John the Baptist Is Born

57 Now ^G1161 the time ^G5550 was fulfilled ^G4130 for Elizabeth ^G1665 to [fn]give ^G5088 birth ^G5088, and she gave ^G1080 birth ^G1080 to a son ^G5207.

58 And her neighbors ^G4040 and her relatives ^G4773 heard ^G191 that the Lord ^G2962 had magnified ^G3170 His great ^G3170 mercy ^G1656 toward ^G3326 her, and they were rejoicing ^G4796 with ^G4796 her.

59 And it happened ^G1096 that on the eighth ^G3590 day ^G2250 they came ^G2064 to circumcise ^G4059 the child ^G3813, and they were going to call ^G2564 him Zechariah ^G2197, after ^G1909 the name ^G3686 of his father ^G3962. 60 But his mother ^G3384 answered ^G611 and said ^G3004, “No ^G3780, but ^G235 he shall be called ^G2564 John ^G2491.” 61 And they said ^G3004 to her, “There is no ^G3762 one ^G3762 among ^G1537 your relatives ^G4772 who ^G3739 is called ^G2564 by this name ^G3686.” 62 And they were making ^G1770 signs ^G1770 to his father ^G3962, as to what ^G5101 G302 he wanted ^G2309 him called ^G2564. 63 And he asked ^G154 for a tablet ^G4093 and wrote ^G1125 as follows ^G3004, “His name ^G3686 is John ^G2491.” And they all ^G3956 marveled ^G2296. 64 And at once ^G3916 his mouth ^G4750 was opened ^G455 and his tongue ^G1100 loosed, and he began to speak ^G2980, blessing ^G2127 God ^G2316. 65 And fear ^G5401 came ^G1096 on all ^G3956 those ^G3588 living ^G4039 around ^G4039 them, and all ^G3956 these ^G3778 matters ^G4487 were being talked ^G1255 about ^G1255 in all ^G3650 the hill ^G3714 country ^G3714 of Judea ^G2449. 66 And all ^G3956 who heard ^G191 these things put ^G5087 them in their heart ^G2588, saying ^G3004, “What ^G5101 then ^G686 will this ^G3778 child ^G3813 be?” For the hand ^G5495 of the [fn]Lord ^G2962 was indeed ^G2532 with him.

Zechariah’s Prophecy

67 And his father ^G3962 Zechariah ^G2197 was filled ^G4130 with the Holy ^G40 Spirit ^G4151, and prophesied ^G4395, saying ^G3004:

68 “Blessed ^G2128 be the [fn]Lord ^G2962 God ^G2316 of Israel ^G2474,

For He visited ^G1980 and accomplished ^G4160 redemption ^G3085 for His people ^G2992,

69 And raised ^G1453 up ^G1453 a horn ^G2768 of salvation ^G4991 for us

In the house ^G3624 of David ^G1138 His servant ^G3816—

70 As He spoke ^G2980 by the mouth ^G4750 of His holy ^G40 prophets ^G4396 from of old ^G165—

71 [fn]Salvation ^G4991 FROM OUR ENEMIES ^G2190,

And FROM THE HAND ^G5495 OF ALL ^G3956 WHO HATE ^G3404 US,

72 To show ^G4160 mercy ^G1656 toward ^G3326 our fathers ^G3962,

And to remember ^G3403 His holy ^G40 covenant ^G1242,

73 The oath ^G3727 which ^G3739 He swore ^G3660 to Abraham ^G11 our father ^G3962,

74 To grant ^G1325 us that we, being rescued ^G4506 from the hand ^G5495 of our enemies ^G2190,

Might serve ^G3000 Him without ^G870 fear ^G870,

75 In holiness ^G3742 and righteousness ^G1343 before ^G1799 Him all ^G3956 our days ^G2250.

76 “And you, child ^G3813, will be called ^G2564 the prophet ^G4396 of the Most ^G5310 High ^G5310,

For you will go ^G4313 on BEFORE ^G1799 THE [fn]LORD ^G2962 TO MAKE ^G2090 READY ^G2090 HIS WAYS ^G3598,

77 To give ^G1325 to His people ^G2992 the knowledge ^G1108 of salvation ^G4991

[fn]By the forgiveness ^G859 of their sins ^G266,

78 Because ^G1223 of the tender ^G4698 mercy ^G1656 of our God ^G2316,

With which ^G3739 the Sunrise ^G395 from on high ^G5311 will visit ^G1980 us,

79 TO SHINE ^G2014 UPON THOSE ^G3588 WHO SIT ^G2521 IN DARKNESS ^G4655 AND THE SHADOW ^G4639 OF DEATH ^G2288,

To direct ^G2720 our feet ^G4228 into the way ^G3598 of peace ^G1515.”

80 And the child ^G3813 continued to grow ^G837 and to become ^G2901 strong ^G2901 in spirit ^G4151, and he lived ^G1510 in the desolate ^G2048 regions ^G2048 until ^G2193 the day ^G2250 of his public ^G323 appearance ^G323 to Israel ^G2474.
