The Parable of the Unrighteous Steward

1 Now ^G1161 He was also ^G2532 saying ^G3004 to the disciples ^G3101, “There was a rich ^G4145 man ^G444 who ^G3739 had ^G2192 a steward ^G3623, and this ^G3778 steward was [fn]reported ^G1225 to him as squandering ^G1287 his possessions ^G5225.

2 And he called ^G5455 for him and said ^G3004 to him, ‘What ^G5101 is this ^G3778 I hear ^G191 about ^G4012 you? Give ^G591 an accounting ^G3056 of your stewardship ^G3622, for you can ^G1410 no ^G3756 longer ^G2089 be steward ^G3621.’ 3 And the steward ^G3623 said ^G3004 to himself ^G1438, ‘What ^G5101 shall I do ^G4160, since ^G3754 my [fn]master ^G2962 is taking ^G851 the stewardship ^G3622 away ^G851 from me? I am ^G2480 not strong ^G2480 enough ^G2480 to dig ^G4626; I am ashamed ^G153 to beg ^G1871. 4 I know ^G1097 what ^G5101 I shall do ^G4160, so ^G2443 that when ^G3752 I am removed ^G3179 from the stewardship ^G3622 people will [fn]take ^G1209 me into their homes ^G3624.’ 5 And he summoned ^G4341 each ^G1538 one ^G1520 of his [fn]master’s ^G2962 debtors ^G5533, and he began saying ^G3004 to the first ^G4413, ‘How ^G4214 much ^G4214 do you owe ^G3784 my master ^G2962?’ 6 And he said ^G3004, ‘One hundred ^G1540 [fn]baths ^G943 of oil ^G1637.’ And he said ^G3004 to him, ‘Take ^G1209 your bill ^G1121, and sit ^G2523 down ^G2523 quickly ^G5030 and write ^G1125 fifty ^G4004.’ 7 Then ^G1899 he said ^G3004 to another ^G2087, ‘And how ^G4214 much ^G4214 do you owe ^G3784?’ And he said ^G3004, ‘One hundred ^G1540 [fn]kors ^G2884 of wheat ^G4621.’ He *said ^G3004 to him, ‘Take ^G1209 your bill ^G1121, and write ^G1125 eighty ^G3589.’ 8 And his [fn]master ^G2962 praised ^G1867 the unrighteous ^G93 steward ^G3623 because ^G3754 he had acted ^G4160 shrewdly ^G5430, for the sons ^G5207 of this ^G3778 age ^G165 are more ^G5429 shrewd ^G5429 in ^G1519 relation ^G1519 to ^G1519 their own ^G1438 [fn]kind ^G1074 than ^G5228 the sons ^G5207 of light ^G5457. 9 And I say ^G3004 to you, make ^G4160 friends ^G5384 for yourselves ^G1438 from ^G1537 the [fn]wealth ^G3126 of unrighteousness ^G93, so ^G2443 that when ^G3752 it fails ^G1587, they will [fn]take ^G1209 you into the eternal ^G166 dwellings ^G4633.

10 “He who is faithful ^G4103 in a very ^G1646 little ^G1646 thing ^G1646 is faithful ^G4103 also ^G2532 in much ^G4183, and he who is unrighteous ^G94 in a very ^G1646 little ^G1646 thing ^G1646 is unrighteous ^G94 also ^G2532 in much ^G4183. 11 Therefore ^G3767 if ^G1487 you have not been ^G1096 faithful ^G4103 in the use of unrighteous ^G94 [fn]wealth ^G3126, who ^G5101 will entrust ^G4100 the true ^G228 riches to you? 12 And if ^G1487 you have not been ^G1096 faithful ^G4103 in the use of that which is another’s ^G245, who ^G5101 will give ^G1325 you that which is your own? 13 No ^G3762 [fn]servant ^G3610 can ^G1410 [fn]serve ^G1398 two ^G1417 masters ^G2962; for either ^G2228 he will hate ^G3404 the one ^G1520 and love ^G25 the other ^G2087, or ^G2228 else ^G2228 he will be devoted ^G472 to one ^G1520 and despise ^G2706 the other ^G2087. You cannot ^G1410 G3756 [fn]serve ^G1398 God ^G2316 and [fn]wealth ^G3126.”

14 Now ^G1161 the Pharisees ^G5330, who were lovers ^G5366 of ^G5366 money ^G5366, were listening ^G191 to all ^G3956 these ^G3778 things ^G3778 and were scoffing ^G1592 at Him. 15 And He said ^G3004 to them, “You are those ^G3588 who justify ^G1344 yourselves ^G1438 [fn]in ^G1799 the ^G1799 sight ^G1799 of ^G1799 men ^G444, but God ^G2316 knows ^G1097 your hearts ^G2588, for that which is highly ^G5308 esteemed ^G5308 among ^G1722 men ^G444 is detestable ^G946 [fn]in ^G1799 the ^G1799 sight ^G1799 of ^G1799 God ^G2316.

16 “The Law ^G3551 and the Prophets ^G4396 were until ^G3360 John ^G2491; [fn]since ^G575 that time ^G5119 the good ^G2097 news ^G2097 of the kingdom ^G932 of God ^G2316 is proclaimed ^G2097, and everyone ^G3956 is forcing ^G971 his way ^G971 into it. 17 But it is easier ^G2123 for heaven ^G3772 and earth ^G1093 to pass ^G3928 away ^G3928 than ^G2228 for one ^G1520 [fn]stroke ^G2762 of ^G2762 a ^G2762 letter ^G2762 of the Law ^G3551 to fail ^G4098.

18 “Everyone ^G3956 who [fn]divorces ^G630 his wife ^G1135 and marries ^G1060 another ^G2087 commits ^G3431 adultery ^G3431, and he who marries ^G1060 a woman who is [fn]divorced ^G630 from a husband ^G435 commits ^G3431 adultery ^G3431.

The Rich Man and Lazarus

19 “Now ^G1161 there was a rich ^G4145 man ^G444, and he habitually dressed ^G1737 in purple ^G4209 and fine ^G1040 linen ^G1040, joyously ^G2165 living ^G2165 in splendor ^G2988 every ^G2596 day ^G2250.

20 But a poor ^G4434 man ^G4434 named ^G3686 Lazarus ^G2976 was laid ^G906 at his gate ^G4440, covered ^G1669 with ^G1669 sores ^G1669, 21 and desiring ^G1937 to be fed ^G5526 with the crumbs which were falling ^G4098 from the rich ^G4145 man’s ^G4145 table ^G5132; besides ^G235, even ^G2532 the dogs ^G2965 were coming ^G2064 and licking ^G621 his sores ^G1668. 22 Now ^G1161 it happened ^G1096 that the poor ^G4434 man ^G4434 died ^G599 and was carried ^G667 away ^G667 by the angels ^G32 to Abraham’s ^G11 bosom ^G2859, and the rich ^G4145 man ^G4145 also ^G2532 died ^G599 and was buried ^G2290. 23 And in Hades ^G86 he lifted ^G1869 up ^G1869 his eyes ^G3788, being ^G5225 in torment ^G931, and *saw ^G3708 Abraham ^G11 far ^G3113 away ^G575 G3113 and Lazarus ^G2976 in his bosom ^G2859. 24 And he cried ^G5455 out and said ^G3004, ‘Father ^G3962 Abraham ^G11, have ^G1653 mercy ^G1653 on me, and send ^G3992 Lazarus ^G2976 so ^G2443 that he may dip ^G911 the tip ^G206 of his finger ^G1147 in water ^G5204 and cool ^G2711 off ^G2711 my tongue ^G1100, for I am ^G3600 in ^G3600 agony ^G3600 in this ^G3778 flame ^G5395.’ 25 But Abraham ^G11 said ^G3004, ‘Child ^G5043, remember ^G3403 that during ^G1722 your life ^G2222 you received ^G618 your good ^G18 things ^G18, and likewise ^G3668 Lazarus ^G2976 bad ^G2556 things ^G2556. But now ^G3568 he is being comforted ^G3870 here ^G5602, and you are in ^G3600 agony ^G3600. 26 And [fn]besides ^G1722 all ^G3956 this ^G3778, between ^G3342 us and you there is a great ^G3173 chasm ^G5490 fixed ^G4741, so ^G3704 that those ^G3588 who wish ^G2309 to come ^G1224 over ^G1224 from ^G6033 here ^G6033 to you are not able ^G1410, and none ^G3366 may cross ^G1276 over ^G1276 from ^G1564 there ^G1564 to us.’ 27 And he said ^G3004, ‘Then ^G3767 I am asking ^G2065 you, father ^G3962, that you send ^G3992 him to my father’s ^G3962 house ^G3624— 28 for I have ^G2192 five ^G4002 brothers ^G80—in ^G3704 order ^G3704 that ^G3704 he may warn ^G1263 them, so ^G2443 that they will not also ^G2532 come ^G2064 to this ^G3778 place ^G5117 of torment ^G931.’ 29 But Abraham ^G11 *said ^G3004, ‘They have ^G2192 Moses ^G3475 and the Prophets ^G4396; let them hear ^G191 them.’ 30 But he said ^G3004, ‘No ^G3780, father ^G3962 Abraham ^G11, but if ^G1437 someone ^G5100 goes ^G4198 to them from the dead ^G3498, they will repent ^G3340!’ 31 But he said ^G3004 to him, ‘If ^G1487 they do not listen ^G191 to Moses ^G3475 and the Prophets ^G4396, they will not be persuaded ^G3982 even ^G3761 if ^G1437 someone ^G5100 rises ^G450 from the dead ^G3498.’”
