The Authority of Jesus Challenged
1 And G2532 it happened G1096 that on one G1520 of the days G2250 while He was teaching G1321 the people G2992 in the temple G2413 and proclaiming G2097 the gospel G2097, the chief G749 priests G749 and the scribes G1122 with the elders G4245 came G2186 up G2186 to Him,
2 and they spoke G3004, saying G3004 to Him, “Tell G3004 us by what G4169 authority G1849 You are doing G4160 these G3778 things G3778, or G2228 who G5101 is the one who gave G1325 You this G3778 authority G1849?” 3 And Jesus answered G611 and said G3004 to them, “I will also G2532 ask G2065 you a [fn]question G3056, and you tell G3004 Me: 4 Was the baptism G908 of John G2491 from heaven G3772 or G2228 from men G444?” 5 And they reasoned G4817 among G4314 themselves G1438, saying G3004, “If G1437 we say G3004, ‘From heaven G3772,’ He will say G3004, ‘Why G1223 G5101 did you not believe G4100 him?’ 6 But if G1437 we say G3004, ‘From men G444,’ all G537 the people G2992 will stone G2642 us to G2642 death G2642, for they are convinced G3982 that John G2491 was a prophet G4396.” 7 So G2532 they answered G611 that they did not know G6063 where G4159 it came from. 8 And Jesus G2424 said G3004 to them, “Neither G3761 [fn]will I tell G3004 you by what G4169 authority G1849 I do G4160 these G3778 things G3778.”
Parable of the Vine-Growers
9 And He began G757 to tell G3004 the people G2992 this G3778 parable G3850: “A man G444 planted G5452 a vineyard G290 and rented G1554 it out to [fn]vine-growers G1092, and went G589 on G589 a G589 journey G589 for a long G2425 time G5550.
10 And at the harvest time G2540 he sent G649 a slave G1401 to the vine-growers G1092, so G2443 that they would give G1325 him some of the fruit G2590 of the vineyard G290. But the vine-growers G1092 sent G1821 him away G1821 empty-handed G2756 having beaten G1194 him. 11 And he proceeded G4369 to send G3992 another G2087 slave G1401; and when they beat G1194 him also G2548 and treated G818 him shamefully G818, they sent G1821 him away G1821 empty-handed G2756. 12 And he proceeded G4369 to send G3992 a third G5154; and this G3778 one G3778 also G2532 they wounded G5135 and cast G1544 out G1544. 13 Now the [fn]owner G2962 of the vineyard G290 said G3004, ‘What G5101 shall I do G4160? I will send G3992 my beloved G27 son G5207; perhaps G2481 they will respect G1788 him.’ 14 But when the vine-growers G1092 saw G3708 him, they were reasoning G1260 with one G240 another G240, saying G3004, ‘This G3778 is the heir G2818; let us kill G615 him so G2443 that the inheritance G2817 will be ours G1473.’ 15 So G2532 they threw G1544 him out G1544 of the vineyard G290 and killed G615 him. What G5101, then G3767, will the [fn]owner G2962 of the vineyard G290 do G4160 to them? 16 He will come G2064 and destroy G622 these G3778 vine-growers G1092 and will give G1325 the vineyard G290 to others G243.” When G1161 they heard G191 this, they said G3004, “May it never G3361 be!” 17 But when [fn]Jesus looked G1689 at G1689 them, He said G3004, “What G5101 then G3767 is this G3778 that is written G1125:
‘THE STONE G3037 WHICH G3739 THE BUILDERS G3618 REJECTED G593,
THIS G3778 BECAME G1096 THE CHIEF G2776 CORNER G1137 stone’?
18 Everyone G3956 who falls G4098 on that stone G3037 will be broken G4917 to G4917 pieces G4917, but on whomever G3739 G302 it falls G4098, it will scatter G3039 him like G3039 dust G3039.”
Taxes to Caesar
19 And the scribes G1122 and the chief G749 priests G749 tried G2212 to lay G1911 hands G5495 on Him that very G846 hour G5610, but they feared G5399 the people G2992. For they understood G1097 that He spoke G3004 this G3778 parable G3850 against G4314 them.
20 So G5620 they watched G3906 Him, and sent G649 spies G1455 who [fn]pretended G5271 to be righteous G1342, so G2443 that G2443 they might [fn]catch G1949 Him in some statement G3056, in G5620 order G5620 to G5620 deliver G3860 Him to the rule G746 and the authority G1849 of the governor G2232. 21 And they questioned G1905 Him, saying G3004, “Teacher G1320, we know G6063 that You speak G3004 and teach G1321 correctly G3723, and You [fn]are not partial G2983 G4383 to any, but teach G1321 the way G3598 of God G2316 in truth G225. 22 Is it [fn]lawful G1832 for us to pay G1325 taxes G5411 to Caesar G2541, or G2228 not?” 23 But He perceived G2657 their craftiness G3834 and said G3004 to them, 24 “Show G1166 Me a [fn]denarius G1220. Whose G5101 [fn]likeness G1504 and inscription G1923 does it have G2192?” They said G3004, “Caesar’s G2541.” 25 And He said G3004 to them, “Then G5106 render G591 to Caesar G2541 the things that are Caesar’s G2541, and to God G2316 the things that are God’s G2316.” 26 And they were unable G3756 G2480 to [fn]catch G1949 Him in a word G4487 in G726 the G1726 presence G1726 of the people G2992; and marveling G2296 at His answer G612, they became G4601 silent G4601.
The Sadducees Ask About the Resurrection
27 Now G1161 some G5100 of the Sadducees G4523 (who say G483 that there is no G3361 resurrection G386) came G4334 to Him,
28 and they questioned G1905 Him, saying G3004, “Teacher G1320, Moses G3475 wrote G1125 for us that IF G1437 A MAN’S G5100 BROTHER G80 DIES G599, having G2192 a wife G1135, AND HE IS CHILDLESS G815, HIS BROTHER G80 SHOULD [fn]MARRY G2983 THE WIFE G1135 AND RAISE G1817 UP [fn]SEED G4690 FOR HIS BROTHER G80. 29 Now G3767 there were seven G2033 brothers G80; and the first G4413 married G2983 a wife G1135 and died G599 childless G815, 30 and the second G1208 31 and the third G5154 [fn]married G2983 her; and in the same G5615 way G5615, [fn]all G3588 seven G2033 [fn]died G599, leaving G2641 no G3756 children G5043. 32 Finally G5306 the woman G1135 died G599 also G2532. 33 Therefore G3767, this woman G1135—in the resurrection G386—whose G846 wife G1135 will she be? For all G3588 seven G2033 had G2192 her G846 as a wife G1135.”
34 And Jesus G2424 said G3004 to them, “The sons G5207 of this G3778 age G165 marry G1060 and are given G1061 in G1061 marriage G1061, 35 but those G3588 who are considered G2661 worthy G2661 to attain G5177 to that age G165 and the resurrection G386 from the dead G3498, neither G3777 marry G1060 nor G3777 are given G1061 in G1061 marriage G1061. 36 For they cannot G1410 G3761 even G3761 die G599 anymore G2089, because G1063 they are like G2465 angels G2465 and are sons G5207 of God G2316, being G1510 sons G5207 of the resurrection G386. 37 But that G3754 the dead G3498 are raised G1453, even G2532 Moses G3475 showed G3377 in the passage about the burning bush G942, where G5613 he calls G3004 the [fn]Lord G2962 THE GOD G2316 OF ABRAHAM G11, AND THE GOD G2316 OF ISAAC G2464, AND THE GOD G2316 OF JACOB G2384. 38 Now G1161 He is not the God G2316 of the dead G3498 but of the living G2198; for all G3956 live G2198 to Him.” 39 And some G5100 of the scribes G1122 answered G611 and said G3004, “Teacher G1320, You have spoken G3004 well G2573.” 40 For they did not dare G5111 to question G1905 Him any G3765 longer G3765 about anything G3762.
41 Then G2532 He said G3004 to them, “How G4459 is it that they say G3004 the [fn]Christ G5547 is David’s G1138 son G5207? 42 For David G1138 himself G846 says G3004 in the book G976 of Psalms G5568,
‘THE [fn]LORD G2962 SAID G3004 TO MY LORD G2962,
“SIT G2521 AT MY RIGHT G1188 HAND G1188,
43 UNTIL G2193 I PUT G5087 YOUR ENEMIES G2190 AS A FOOTSTOOL G5286 FOR YOUR FEET G4228.”’
44 Therefore G3767 David G1138 calls G2564 Him ‘Lord G2962,’ so how G4459 is He his son G5207?”
45 And while all G3956 the people G2992 were listening G191, He said G3004 to the disciples G3101, 46 “Beware G4337 of the scribes G1122, who want G2309 to walk G4043 around G4043 in long G4749 robes G4749, and love G5368 greetings G783 in the marketplaces G58, and best G4410 seats G4410 in the synagogues G4864 and places G4411 of G4411 honor G4411 at banquets G1173, 47 who G3739 devour G2719 widows’ G5503 houses G3614, and for appearance’s G4392 sake G4392 offer G4336 long G3117 prayers G4336. These G3778 will receive G2983 greater G4053 condemnation G2917.”
