The First Disciples

1 Now ^G1161 it happened ^G1096 that while ^G1722 the crowd ^G3793 was pressing ^G1945 around ^G1945 Him and listening ^G191 to the word ^G3056 of God ^G2316, He was standing ^G2476 at the edge of the lake ^G3041 of Gennesaret ^G1082;

2 and He saw ^G3708 two ^G1417 boats ^G4142 lying ^G2476 at the edge of the lake ^G3041, and the fishermen ^G231, having gotten ^G576 out ^G576 of them, were washing ^G4150 their nets ^G1350. 3 And He got ^G1684 into one ^G1520 of the boats ^G4143, which ^G3739 was Simon’s ^G4613, and asked ^G2065 him to put ^G1877 out ^G1877 a little ^G3641 way ^G3641 from the land ^G1093. And He sat ^G2523 down ^G2523 and began teaching ^G1321 the crowds ^G3793 from the boat ^G4143. 4 And when ^G5613 He had finished ^G3973 speaking ^G2980, He said ^G3004 to Simon ^G4613, “Put ^G1877 out ^G1877 into the deep ^G899 water ^G899 and let ^G5465 down ^G5465 your nets ^G1350 for a catch ^G61.” 5 Simon ^G4613 answered ^G611 and said ^G3004, “Master ^G1988, we labored ^G2872 all ^G3650 night ^G3571 and caught ^G2983 nothing ^G3762, but at Your word ^G4487, I will let ^G5465 down ^G5465 the nets ^G1350.” 6 And when they had done ^G4160 this ^G3778, they enclosed ^G4788 a great ^G4183 quantity ^G4128 of fish ^G2486. And their nets ^G1350 began to break ^G1284; 7 so ^G5620 they signaled ^G2656 to their partners ^G3353 in the other ^G2087 boat ^G4143 for them to come ^G2064 and help ^G4815 them. And they came ^G2064 and filled ^G4130 both ^G297 of the boats ^G4143, so ^G5620 that they began to sink ^G1036. 8 But when Simon ^G4613 Peter ^G4074 saw ^G3708 this, he fell ^G4363 down ^G4363 at Jesus’ ^G2424 knees ^G1119, saying ^G3004, “Go ^G1831 away ^G1831 from me Lord ^G2962, for I am ^G1510 a sinful ^G268 man ^G435!” 9 For amazement ^G2285 had seized ^G4023 him and all ^G3956 his companions ^G3588 G4862 because ^G1909 of the catch ^G61 of fish ^G2486 which ^G3739 they had taken ^G4815, 10 and [fn]James ^G2385 and John ^G2491, sons ^G5207 of Zebedee ^G2199, who ^G3739 were partners ^G2844 with Simon ^G4613, were also ^G2532 likewise ^G3668 amazed. And Jesus ^G2424 said ^G3004 to Simon ^G4613, “Do not fear ^G5399, from now ^G3568 on you will be catching ^G2221 men ^G444.” 11 And when they had brought ^G2609 their boats ^G4143 to land ^G1093, they left ^G863 everything ^G3956 and followed ^G190 Him.

Jesus Heals a Leper

12 And ^G2532 it happened ^G1096 that while ^G1722 He was in one ^G1520 of the cities ^G4172, behold ^G2400, there was a man ^G435 [fn]covered ^G4134 with leprosy ^G3014; and when he saw ^G3708 Jesus ^G2424, he fell ^G4098 on his face ^G4383 and begged ^G1189 Him, saying ^G3004, “Lord ^G2962, if ^G1437 You are willing ^G2309, You can ^G1410 make ^G2511 me clean ^G2511.”

13 And He stretched ^G1614 out ^G1614 His hand ^G5495 and touched ^G681 him, saying ^G3004, “I am ^G2309 willing ^G2309; be cleansed ^G2511.” And immediately ^G2112 the leprosy ^G3014 left ^G565 him. 14 And He directed ^G3853 him to tell ^G3004 no ^G3367 one ^G3367, “But go ^G565 and show ^G1166 yourself ^G4572 to the priest ^G2409 and make ^G4374 an ^G4374 offering ^G4374 for your cleansing ^G2512, just ^G2531 as Moses ^G3475 commanded ^G4367, as a testimony ^G3142 to them.” 15 But the news ^G3056 about ^G4012 Him was spreading ^G1330 even ^G3123 farther ^G3123, and large ^G4183 crowds ^G3793 were gathering ^G4905 to hear ^G191 Him and to be healed ^G2323 of their sicknesses ^G769. 16 But He Himself ^G846 would often slip ^G5298 away ^G5298 [fn]to the desolate ^G2048 regions ^G2048 and pray ^G4336.

Jesus Heals a Paralytic

17 And ^G2532 it happened ^G1096 that [fn]one ^G1520 day ^G2250 He was teaching ^G1321; and there were some Pharisees ^G5330 and teachers ^G3547 of ^G3547 the ^G3547 law ^G3547 sitting ^G2521 there, who ^G3739 had come ^G2064 from every ^G3956 village ^G2968 of Galilee ^G1056 and Judea ^G2449 and from Jerusalem ^G2419, and the power ^G1411 of the Lord ^G2962 was present for Him to perform ^G2390 healing ^G2390.

18 And behold ^G2400, some men ^G435 were carrying ^G5342 on a stretcher ^G2825 a man ^G444 who ^G3739 was paralyzed ^G3886; and they were trying ^G2212 to bring ^G1533 him in ^G1533 and to set ^G5087 him down ^G5087 before ^G1799 Him. 19 But not finding ^G2147 any ^G4169 way to bring ^G1533 him in ^G1533 because ^G1223 of the crowd ^G3793, they went ^G305 up ^G305 on the roof ^G1430 and let ^G2524 him down ^G2524 through ^G1223 the tiles ^G2766 with his stretcher ^G2826, into the middle ^G3319 of the crowd, in front ^G1715 of Jesus ^G2424. 20 And seeing ^G3708 their faith ^G4102, He said ^G3004, “[fn]Friend ^G444, your sins ^G266 are forgiven ^G863 you.” 21 The scribes ^G1122 and the Pharisees ^G5330 began ^G757 to reason ^G1260, saying ^G3004, “Who ^G5101 is this ^G3778 who ^G3739 speaks ^G2980 blasphemies ^G988? Who ^G5101 can ^G1410 forgive ^G863 sins ^G266, but God ^G2316 alone ^G3441?” 22 But Jesus ^G2424, [fn]knowing ^G1921 their reasonings ^G1261, answered ^G611 and said ^G3004 to them, “Why ^G5101 are you reasoning ^G1260 in your hearts ^G2588? 23 Which ^G5101 is easier ^G2123, to say ^G3004, ‘Your sins ^G266 have been forgiven ^G863 you,’ or ^G2228 to say ^G3004, ‘Get ^G1453 up ^G1453 and walk ^G4043’? 24 But, so ^G2443 that you may know ^G6063 that the Son ^G5207 of Man ^G444 has ^G2192 authority ^G1849 on earth ^G1093 to forgive ^G863 sins ^G266,”—He said ^G3004 to the paralytic ^G3886—“I say ^G3004 to you, get ^G1453 up ^G1453, and, picking ^G142 up ^G142 your stretcher ^G2826, go ^G4198 home ^G3624.” 25 And immediately ^G3916 he rose ^G450 up ^G450 before ^G1799 them, and picked ^G142 up ^G142 what ^G3739 he had been lying ^G2621 on, and went ^G565 home ^G3624 glorifying ^G1392 God ^G2316. 26 And astonishment ^G1611 seized ^G2983 them all ^G537 and they began glorifying ^G1392 God ^G2316; and they were filled ^G4130 with fear ^G5401, saying ^G3004, “We have seen ^G3708 remarkable ^G3861 things ^G3861 today ^G4594.”

Levi and Sinners Called

27 And after ^G3326 that He went ^G1831 out ^G1831 and noticed ^G2300 a tax ^G5057 collector ^G5057 named ^G3686 [fn]Levi ^G3017 sitting ^G2521 in the tax ^G5058 office ^G5058, and He said ^G3004 to him, “Follow ^G190 Me.”

28 And he left ^G2641 everything ^G3956 behind ^G2641, and rose ^G450 up ^G450 and began to follow ^G190 Him.

29 And Levi ^G3017 gave ^G4160 a big ^G3173 reception ^G1403 for Him in his house ^G3614; and there was a great ^G4183 crowd ^G3793 of tax ^G5057 collectors ^G5057 and other ^G243 people who ^G3739 were reclining ^G2621 at the table with them. 30 And the Pharisees ^G5330 and their scribes ^G1122 began grumbling ^G1111 at His disciples ^G3101, saying ^G3004, “Why ^G1223 G5101 do you eat ^G2068 and drink ^G4095 with the tax ^G5057 collectors ^G5057 and [fn]sinners ^G268?” 31 And Jesus ^G2424 answered ^G611 and said ^G3004 to them, “It is not those ^G3588 who are well ^G5198 who need ^G5532 a physician ^G2395, but those ^G3588 who are sick ^G2560. 32 I have not come ^G2064 to call ^G2564 the righteous ^G1342 but sinners ^G268 to repentance ^G3341.”

33 And they said ^G3004 to Him, “The disciples ^G3101 of John ^G2491 often ^G4437 fast ^G3522 and offer ^G4160 prayers ^G1162, the disciples of the Pharisees ^G5330 also ^G2532 do likewise ^G3668, but Yours ^G4674 eat ^G2068 and drink ^G4095.” 34 And Jesus ^G2424 said ^G3004 to them, “Can you ^G1410 G3361 make ^G4160 the [fn]attendants ^G5207 of the bridegroom ^G3567 fast ^G3522 while ^G1722 G3739 the bridegroom ^G3566 is with them? 35 But the days ^G2250 will come ^G2064; and when ^G3752 the bridegroom ^G3566 is taken ^G522 away ^G522 from them, then ^G5119 they will fast ^G3522 in those ^G1565 days ^G2250.” 36 And He was also ^G2532 telling ^G3004 them a parable ^G3850: “No ^G3762 one ^G3762 tears ^G4977 a piece ^G1915 of ^G1915 cloth ^G1915 from a new ^G2537 garment ^G2440 and puts ^G1911 it on an old ^G3820 garment ^G2440; otherwise ^G1490 he will both ^G2532 tear ^G4977 the new ^G2537 and the piece ^G1915 from the new ^G2537 will not match ^G4856 the old ^G3820. 37 And no ^G3762 one ^G3762 puts ^G906 new ^G3501 wine ^G3631 into old ^G3820 wineskins ^G779; otherwise ^G1490 the new ^G3501 wine ^G3631 will burst ^G4486 the skins ^G779 and it will be spilled ^G1632 out ^G1632, and the skins ^G779 will be ruined ^G622. 38 But new ^G3501 wine ^G3631 must ^G992 be ^G992 put ^G992 into fresh ^G2537 wineskins ^G779. 39 And no ^G3762 one ^G3762, after drinking ^G4095 old ^G3820 wine wishes ^G2309 for new ^G3501; for he says ^G3004, ‘The old ^G3820 is good ^G5543 enough ^G5543.’”
