God’s Commandments, Man’s Traditions

1 And the Pharisees ^G5330 and some ^G5100 of the scribes ^G1122 *gathered ^G4863 around ^G4314 Him when they had come ^G2064 from Jerusalem ^G2414,

2 and had seen ^G3708 that some ^G5100 of His disciples ^G3101 were eating ^G2068 their bread ^G740 with defiled ^G2839 hands ^G5495, that is, unwashed ^G449. 3 (For the Pharisees ^G5330 and all ^G3956 the Jews ^G2453 do not eat ^G2068 unless ^G1437 G3361 they [fn]carefully ^G4435 wash ^G3538 their hands ^G5495, thus observing ^G2902 the tradition ^G3862 of the elders ^G4245; 4 and when they come from the marketplace ^G58, they do not eat ^G2068 unless ^G1437 G3361 they [fn]wash ^G907 themselves; and there are many ^G4183 other ^G243 things ^G4183 which ^G3739 they have received ^G3880 in order to observe ^G2902, such as the washing ^G909 of cups ^G4221 and pitchers ^G3582 and copper ^G5473 pots ^G5473.) 5 And the Pharisees ^G5330 and the scribes ^G1122 *asked ^G1905 Him, “Why ^G1223 G5101 do Your disciples ^G3101 not walk ^G4043 according ^G2596 to the tradition ^G3862 of the elders ^G4245, but eat ^G2068 their bread ^G740 with defiled ^G2839 hands ^G5495?” 6 And He said ^G3004 to them, “Rightly ^G2573 did Isaiah ^G2268 prophesy ^G4395 of you hypocrites ^G5273, as it is written ^G1125:

‘THIS ^G3778 PEOPLE ^G2992 HONORS ^G5091 ME WITH THEIR LIPS ^G5491,

BUT THEIR HEART ^G2588 IS FAR ^G4206 AWAY ^G568 G4206 FROM ME.

7 ‘BUT IN ^G3155 VAIN ^G3155 DO THEY WORSHIP ^G4576 ME,

TEACHING ^G1321 AS DOCTRINES ^G1319 THE COMMANDS ^G1778 OF MEN ^G444.’

8 Leaving ^G863 the commandment ^G1785 of God ^G2316, you hold ^G2902 to the tradition ^G3862 of men ^G444.”

9 And He was also ^G2532 saying ^G3004 to them, “You are good ^G2573 at setting ^G114 aside ^G114 the commandment ^G1785 of God ^G2316 in ^G2443 order ^G2443 to ^G2443 keep ^G5083 your tradition ^G3862. 10 For Moses ^G3475 said ^G3004, ‘HONOR ^G5091 YOUR FATHER ^G3962 AND YOUR MOTHER ^G3384’; and, ‘HE WHO SPEAKS ^G2551 EVIL ^G2551 OF ^G2551 FATHER ^G3962 OR ^G2228 MOTHER ^G3384, IS TO [fn]BE PUT ^G5053 TO DEATH ^G2288’; 11 but you say ^G3004, ‘If ^G1437 a man ^G444 says ^G3004 to his father ^G3962 or ^G2228 his mother ^G3384, whatever ^G3739 G1437 you might benefit ^G5623 from me ^G1473 is Corban ^G2878 (that is to say, [fn]given ^G1435 to God),’ 12 you no ^G3765 longer ^G3765 leave ^G863 him to do ^G4160 anything ^G3762 for his father ^G3962 or ^G2228 his mother ^G3384; 13 thus invalidating ^G208 the word ^G3056 of God ^G2316 by your tradition ^G3862 which ^G3739 you have handed ^G3860 down ^G3860; and you do ^G4160 many ^G4183 things ^G4183 such ^G3946 as that.”

The Heart of Man

14 And after He called ^G4341 the crowd ^G3793 to Him again ^G3825, He began saying ^G3004 to them, “Listen ^G191 to Me, all ^G3956 of you, and understand ^G4920:

15 there is nothing ^G3762 outside ^G1855 the man ^G444 which can ^G1410 defile ^G2840 him if it goes ^G1531 into him; but the things which proceed ^G1607 out ^G1607 of the man ^G444 are what defile ^G2840 the man ^G444. 16 [fn][And if ^G1487 anyone ^G5100 has ^G2192 ears ^G3775 to hear ^G191, let him hear ^G191.”]

17 And when ^G3753 He had left ^G575 the crowd ^G3793 and entered ^G1525 the house ^G3624, His disciples ^G3101 were asking ^G1905 Him about the parable ^G3850. 18 And He *said ^G3004 to them, “Are you lacking ^G801 understanding ^G801 in this way ^G3779 as well ^G2532? Do you not [fn]perceive ^G3539 that whatever ^G3956 goes ^G1531 into the man ^G444 from ^G1855 outside ^G1855 cannot ^G1410 G3756 defile ^G2840 him, 19 because ^G3754 it does not go ^G1531 into his heart ^G2588, but into his stomach ^G2836, and goes ^G1607 to ^G1519 the ^G3588 sewer ^G856?” (Thus He declared ^G2511 all ^G3956 foods ^G1033 clean ^G2511.) 20 And He was saying ^G3004, “That which proceeds ^G1607 out ^G1607 of the man ^G444, that is what defiles ^G2840 the man ^G444. 21 For from ^G2081 within ^G2081, out of the heart ^G2588 of men ^G444, proceed ^G1607 the evil ^G2556 thoughts ^G1261, sexual immoralities ^G4202, thefts ^G2829, murders ^G5408, adulteries ^G3430, 22 coveting ^G4124, wickedness ^G4189, deceit ^G1388, sensuality ^G766, [fn]envy ^G3788 G4190, slander ^G988, [fn]pride ^G5243, and foolishness ^G877. 23 All ^G3956 these ^G3778 evil ^G4190 things ^G4190 proceed ^G1607 from ^G1607 within ^G2081 and defile ^G2840 the man ^G444.”

A Gentile Woman’s Faith

24 Now Jesus stood ^G450 up ^G450 and went ^G565 away ^G565 from ^G1564 there ^G1564 to the region ^G3725 of Tyre ^G5184[fn]. And when He had entered ^G1525 a house ^G3614, He was wanting ^G2309 no ^G3762 one ^G3762 to know ^G1097 of it; [fn]yet ^G2532 He could ^G1410 not escape ^G2990 notice ^G2990.

25 But after hearing ^G191 of Him, a woman ^G1135 whose ^G3739 little ^G2365 daughter ^G2365 had ^G2192 an unclean ^G169 spirit ^G4151 immediately ^G2117 came ^G2064 and fell ^G4363 at His feet ^G4228. 26 Now ^G1161 the woman ^G1135 was a [fn]Greek ^G1674, of Syrophoenician ^G4949 descent ^G1085. And she kept asking ^G2065 Him to cast ^G1544 the demon ^G1140 out ^G1544 of her daughter ^G2364. 27 And He was saying ^G3004 to her, “Let ^G863 the children ^G5043 be satisfied ^G5526 first ^G4413, for it is not [fn]good ^G2570 to take ^G2983 the children’s ^G5043 bread ^G740 and throw ^G906 it to the dogs ^G2952.” 28 But she answered ^G611 and *said ^G3004 to Him, “Yes ^G3483, Lord ^G2962, but even ^G2532 the dogs ^G2952 under ^G5270 the table ^G5132 feed ^G2068 on the children’s ^G3813 crumbs ^G5589.” 29 And He said ^G3004 to her, “Because ^G1223 of this ^G3778 [fn]answer ^G3056 go ^G5217; the demon ^G1140 has gone ^G1831 out ^G1831 of your daughter ^G2364.” 30 And going ^G565 back ^G565 to her home ^G3624, she found ^G2147 the child ^G3813 [fn]lying ^G906 on the bed ^G2825, the demon ^G1140 having left ^G1831.

The Deaf Hear, the Mute Speak

31 And again ^G3825 He went ^G1831 out ^G1831 from the region ^G3725 of Tyre ^G5184, and came ^G2064 through ^G1223 Sidon ^G4605 to the Sea ^G2281 of Galilee ^G1056, within ^G303 G3319 the region ^G3725 of the Decapolis ^G1179.

32 And they *brought ^G5342 to Him one ^G2974 who was deaf ^G2974 and spoke ^G3424 with difficulty ^G3424, and they *pleaded ^G3870 with Him to lay ^G2007 His hand ^G5495 on him. 33 And Jesus took ^G618 him aside ^G618 from the crowd ^G3793, by himself ^G2398, and put ^G906 His fingers ^G1147 into his ears ^G3775, and after spitting ^G4429, He touched ^G681 his tongue ^G1100; 34 and looking ^G308 up ^G308 to heaven ^G3772 with a sigh ^G4727, He *said ^G3004 to him, “Ephphatha ^G2188!” that is, “Be opened ^G1272!” 35 And his ears ^G189 were opened ^G455, and the [fn]impediment ^G1199 of his tongue ^G1100 [fn]was removed ^G3089, and he began speaking ^G2980 plainly ^G3723. 36 And He gave ^G1291 them orders ^G1291 not to tell ^G3004 anyone ^G3367; but the more ^G3745 He was ordering ^G1291 them, the more ^G3123 widely ^G4053 they continued to proclaim ^G2784 it. 37 And they were utterly ^G5249 astonished ^G1605, saying ^G3004, “He has done ^G4160 all ^G3956 things ^G3956 well ^G2573; He makes ^G4160 even ^G2532 the deaf ^G2974 to hear ^G191 and the mute ^G216 to speak ^G2980.”
