Giving to the Poor and Prayer

1 “Beware ^G4337 of doing ^G4160 your righteousness ^G1343 before ^G1715 men ^G444 to be noticed ^G2300 by them; otherwise ^G1490 you have ^G2192 no ^G3756 reward ^G3408 with your Father ^G3962 who ^G3588 is in heaven ^G3772.

2 “Therefore ^G3767, when ^G3752 you [fn]give ^G4160 to the poor, do not sound ^G4537 a ^G4537 trumpet ^G4537 before ^G1715 you, as the hypocrites ^G5273 do ^G4160 in the synagogues ^G4864 and in the streets ^G4505, so ^G3767 that they may be glorified ^G1392 by men ^G444. Truly ^G281 I say ^G3004 to you, they have ^G568 their reward ^G3408 in full ^G568.

3 But when you [fn]give ^G4160 to the poor, do not let your left ^G710 hand ^G710 know ^G1097 what ^G5101 your right ^G1188 hand ^G1188 is doing ^G4160, 4 so ^G3704 that your [fn]giving ^G1654 will be in secret ^G2927; and your Father ^G3962 who sees ^G991 what is done in secret ^G2927 will reward ^G591 you.

5 “And when ^G3752 you pray ^G4336, you are not to be like ^G5613 the hypocrites ^G5273; for they love ^G5368 to stand ^G2476 and pray ^G4336 in the synagogues ^G4864 and on the street ^G4116 corners ^G1137 [fn]so ^G3704 that they may be seen ^G5316 by men ^G444. Truly ^G281 I say ^G3004 to you, they have ^G568 their reward ^G3408 in full ^G568. 6 But you, when ^G3752 you pray ^G4336, go ^G1525 into your inner ^G5009 room ^G5009, and when you have shut ^G2808 your door ^G2374, pray ^G4336 to your Father ^G3962 who ^G3588 is in secret ^G2927, and your Father ^G3962 who ^G3588 sees ^G991 what is done in secret ^G2927 will reward ^G591 you.

7 “And when you are praying ^G4336, do not use ^G945 meaningless ^G945 repetition ^G945 as the Gentiles ^G1482 do, for they suppose ^G1380 that they will be heard ^G1522 for their many ^G4180 words ^G4180. 8 Therefore ^G3767, do not be like ^G3666 them; for your Father ^G3962 knows ^G6063 what ^G3739 you need ^G5532 before ^G4253 you ask ^G154 Him.

9 “Pray ^G4336, then ^G3767, in ^G3779 this ^G3779 way ^G3779:

‘Our Father ^G3962 who ^G3588 is in heaven ^G3772,

Hallowed ^G37 be Your name ^G3686.

10 ‘Your kingdom ^G932 come ^G2064.

Your will ^G2307 be done ^G1096,

On earth ^G1093 as it is in heaven ^G3772.

11 ‘Give ^G1325 us this ^G4594 day ^G4594 [fn]our daily ^G1967 bread ^G740.

12 ‘And forgive ^G863 us our debts ^G3783, as we also ^G2532 have forgiven ^G863 our debtors ^G3781.

13 ‘And do not lead ^G1533 us into temptation ^G3986, but deliver ^G4506 us from [fn]the ^G3588 evil ^G4190 one. [fn][For Yours ^G4771 is the kingdom ^G932 and the power ^G1411 and the glory ^G1391 forever ^G165. Amen ^G281.’]

14 For if ^G1437 you forgive ^G863 [fn]others ^G444 for their transgressions ^G3900, your heavenly ^G3770 Father ^G3962 will also ^G2532 forgive ^G863 you. 15 But if ^G1437 you do not forgive ^G863 [fn]others ^G444, then ^G3761 your Father ^G3962 will not forgive ^G863 your transgressions ^G3900.

Fasting

16 “Now whenever ^G3752 you fast ^G3522, do not put ^G1096 on a gloomy ^G4659 face ^G4659 as the hypocrites ^G5273 do, for they [fn]neglect ^G853 their appearance ^G4383 so ^G3704 that they will be noticed ^G5316 by men ^G444 when they are fasting ^G3522. Truly ^G281 I say ^G3004 to you, they have ^G568 their reward ^G3408 in full ^G568.

17 But you, when you fast ^G3522, anoint ^G218 your head ^G2776 and wash ^G3538 your face ^G4383 18 so ^G3704 that your fasting ^G3522 will not be noticed ^G5316 by men ^G444, but by your Father ^G3962 who ^G3588 is in secret ^G6058; and your Father ^G3962 who ^G3588 sees ^G991 what is done in secret ^G6058 will reward ^G591 you.

Treasures in Heaven

19 “Do not store ^G2343 up ^G2343 for yourselves ^G4771 treasures ^G2344 on earth ^G1093, where ^G3699 moth ^G4597 and rust ^G1035 destroy ^G853, and where ^G3699 thieves ^G2812 break ^G1358 in ^G1358 and steal ^G2813.

20 But store ^G2343 up ^G2343 for yourselves ^G4771 treasures ^G2344 in heaven ^G3772, where ^G3699 neither ^G3777 moth ^G4597 nor ^G3777 rust ^G1035 destroys ^G853, and where ^G3699 thieves ^G2812 do not break ^G1358 in ^G1358 or ^G3761 steal ^G2813; 21 for where ^G3699 your treasure ^G2344 is, there ^G1563 your heart ^G2588 will be also ^G2532.

22 “The eye ^G3788 is the lamp ^G3088 of the body ^G4983; so ^G3767 then ^G3767 if ^G1437 your eye ^G3788 is [fn]clear ^G573, your whole ^G3650 body ^G4983 will be full ^G5460 of ^G5460 light ^G5460. 23 But if ^G1437 your eye ^G3788 is [fn]bad ^G4190, your whole ^G3650 body ^G4983 will be full ^G4652 of darkness ^G4652. If ^G1487 then ^G3767 the light ^G5457 that is in you is darkness ^G4655, how ^G4214 great ^G4214 is the darkness ^G4655!

24 “No ^G3762 one ^G3762 can ^G1410 [fn]serve ^G1398 two ^G1417 masters ^G2962; for either ^G2228 he will hate ^G3404 the one ^G1520 and love ^G25 the other ^G2087, or ^G2228 he will be devoted ^G472 to one ^G1520 and despise ^G2706 the other ^G2087. You cannot ^G1410 G3756 [fn]serve ^G1398 God ^G2316 and [fn]wealth ^G3126.

Do Not Worry

25 “For this ^G3778 reason ^G1223 I say ^G3004 to you, [fn]do not be worried ^G3309 about ^G3588 your [fn]life ^G5590, as to what ^G5101 you will eat ^G2068 or ^G2228 what ^G5101 you will drink ^G4095; nor ^G3366 for your body ^G4983, as to what ^G5101 you will put ^G1746 on. Is not life ^G5590 more ^G4183 than food ^G5160, and the body ^G4983 more ^G4183 than clothing ^G1742?

26 Look ^G1689 at the birds ^G4071 of the [fn]air ^G3772, that they do not sow ^G4687, nor ^G3761 reap ^G2325 nor ^G3761 gather ^G4863 into barns ^G596, and yet your heavenly ^G3770 Father ^G3962 feeds ^G5142 them. Are you not worth ^G1308 much ^G3123 more ^G1308 than they? 27 And which ^G5101 of you by worrying ^G3309 can ^G1410 add ^G4369 a single ^G1520 [fn]cubit ^G4083 to his [fn]life span ^G2244? 28 And why ^G5101 are you worried ^G3309 about ^G4012 clothing ^G1742? Observe ^G2648 how ^G4459 the lilies ^G2918 of ^G68 the ^G68 field ^G68 grow ^G837; they do not toil ^G2872 nor ^G3761 do they spin ^G3514, 29 yet ^G1161 I say ^G3004 to you that not even ^G3761 Solomon ^G4672 in all ^G3956 his glory ^G1391 clothed ^G4016 himself like ^G5613 one ^G1520 of these ^G3778. 30 But if ^G1487 God ^G2316 so ^G3779 clothes ^G294 the grass ^G5528 of ^G68 the ^G68 field ^G68, which is alive today ^G4594 and tomorrow ^G839 is thrown ^G906 into the furnace ^G2823, will He not much ^G4183 more ^G3123 clothe you? You of ^G3640 little ^G3640 faith ^G3640! 31 Do not worry ^G3309 then ^G3767, saying ^G3004, ‘What ^G5101 will we eat ^G2068?’ or ^G2228 ‘What ^G5101 will we drink ^G4095?’ or ^G2228 ‘What ^G5101 will we wear ^G4016 for ^G4016 clothing ^G4016?’ 32 For all ^G3956 these ^G3778 things ^G3778 the Gentiles ^G1484 eagerly ^G1934 seek ^G1934; for your heavenly ^G3770 Father ^G3962 knows ^G6063 that you need ^G5535 all ^G537 these ^G3778 things ^G3778. 33 But [fn]seek ^G2212 first ^G4413 [fn]His kingdom ^G932 and His righteousness ^G1343, and all ^G3956 these ^G3778 things ^G3778 will be [fn]added ^G4369 to you.

34 “So ^G3767 do not worry ^G3309 about ^G1519 tomorrow ^G839; for tomorrow ^G839 will worry ^G3309 about ^G3309 itself ^G1438. [fn]Each day ^G2250 has enough ^G713 trouble ^G2549 of its own.
