Vengeance on Midian

1 Then Yahweh ^H3068 spoke ^H1696 to Moses ^H4872, saying ^H559,

2 “Take ^H5358 full ^H5360 vengeance ^H5360 for the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 on the Midianites ^H4084; afterward ^H310 you will be gathered ^H622 to your people ^H5971.” 3 And Moses ^H4872 spoke ^H1696 to the people ^H5971, saying ^H559, “Arm ^H2502 men ^H376 from among ^H854 you for the war ^H6635, that they may [fn]go ^H1961 against ^H5921 Midian ^H4080 to execute ^H5414 Yahweh’s ^H3068 vengeance ^H5360 on Midian ^H4080. 4 One thousand ^H505 from each tribe ^H4294 of all ^H3605 the tribes ^H4294 of Israel ^H3478 you shall send ^H7971 to the war ^H6635.” 5 So there were [fn]furnished ^H4560 from the thousands ^H505 of Israel ^H3478, one thousand ^H505 from each tribe ^H4294, twelve ^H8147 H6240 thousand ^H505 armed ^H2502 for war ^H6635. 6 And Moses ^H4872 sent ^H7971 them, one thousand ^H505 from each tribe ^H4294, to the war ^H6635, and Phinehas ^H6372 the son ^H1121 of Eleazar ^H499 the priest ^H3548, to the war ^H6635 with them, and the holy ^H6944 vessels ^H3627 and the trumpets ^H2689 for the alarm ^H8643 in his hand ^H3027. 7 So they made ^H6633 war ^H6633 against ^H5921 Midian ^H4080, just ^H834 as Yahweh ^H3068 had commanded ^H6680 Moses ^H4872, and they killed ^H2026 every ^H3605 male ^H2145. 8 They killed ^H2026 the kings ^H4428 of Midian ^H4080 along ^H5921 with ^H5921 the rest of their slain ^H2491: Evi ^H189 and Rekem ^H7552 and Zur ^H6698 and Hur ^H2354 and Reba ^H7254, the five ^H2568 kings ^H4428 of Midian ^H4080; they also killed ^H2026 Balaam ^H1109 the son ^H1121 of Beor ^H1160 with the sword ^H2719. 9 And the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 captured ^H7617 the women ^H802 of Midian ^H4080 and their little ^H2945 ones ^H2945; and all ^H3605 their cattle ^H929 and all ^H3605 their flocks ^H4735 and all ^H3605 their goods ^H2428 they plundered ^H962. 10 Then they burned ^H8313 all ^H3605 their cities ^H5892 where ^H4186 they lived ^H4186 and all ^H3605 their camps ^H2918 with fire ^H784. 11 And they took ^H3947 all ^H3605 the spoil ^H7998 and all ^H3605 the loot ^H4455, both of man ^H120 and of beast ^H929. 12 And they brought ^H935 the captives ^H7628 and the loot ^H4455 and the spoil ^H7998 to Moses ^H4872 and to Eleazar ^H499 the priest ^H3548 and to the congregation ^H5712 of the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478, to the camp ^H4264 at the plains ^H6160 of Moab ^H4124, which ^H834 are by the Jordan ^H3383 opposite Jericho ^H3405.

21 Then Eleazar ^H499 the priest ^H3548 said ^H559 to the men ^H376 of war ^H6635 who had gone ^H935 to battle ^H4421, “This ^H2088 is the statute ^H2708 of the law ^H8451 which ^H834 Yahweh ^H3068 has commanded ^H6680 Moses ^H4872: 22 only ^H389 the gold ^H2091 and the silver ^H3701, the bronze ^H5178, the iron ^H1270, the tin ^H913 and the lead ^H5777, 23 everything ^H3605 that can stand ^H935 the fire ^H784, you shall pass ^H5674 through the fire ^H784, and it shall be ^H2891 clean ^H2891, but it shall be purified ^H2398 with water ^H4325 for impurity ^H5079. Division of the Loot

25 Then Yahweh ^H3068 spoke ^H559 to Moses ^H4872, saying ^H559,

26 “You and Eleazar ^H499 the priest ^H3548 and the heads ^H7218 of the fathers’ ^H1 households of the congregation ^H5712 take ^H5375 a count ^H7218 of the loot ^H4455 [fn]that was captured ^H7628, both of man ^H120 and of animal ^H929; 27 and divide ^H2673 the loot ^H4455 between ^H996 the warriors ^H4421 who went ^H3318 out ^H3318 to battle ^H4421 and all ^H3605 the congregation ^H5712. 28 And you shall exact ^H7311 a levy ^H4371 for Yahweh ^H3068 from the men ^H376 of war ^H4421 who went ^H3318 out ^H3318 to battle ^H4421, one ^H259 [fn]in five ^H2568 hundred ^H3967 of the persons ^H120 and of the cattle ^H1241 and of the donkeys ^H2543 and of the sheep ^H6629; 29 take ^H3947 it from their half ^H4276 and give ^H5414 it to Eleazar ^H499 the priest ^H3548, as a [fn]contribution ^H8641 to Yahweh ^H3068. 30 And from the sons ^H1121 of Israel’s ^H3478 half ^H4276, you shall take ^H3947 one ^H259 drawn ^H270 out of every fifty ^H2572 of the persons ^H120, of the cattle ^H1241, of the donkeys ^H2543, and of the sheep ^H6629, from all ^H3605 the animals ^H929, and give ^H5414 them to the Levites ^H3881 who keep ^H8104 charge ^H4931 of the tabernacle ^H4908 of Yahweh ^H3068.” 31 Moses ^H4872 and Eleazar ^H499 the priest ^H3548 did ^H6213 just ^H834 as Yahweh ^H3068 had commanded ^H6680 Moses ^H4872.

32 Now the loot ^H4455 that remained ^H1961 H3499 from the plunder ^H957 which ^H834 the [fn]men ^H5971 of war ^H6635 had plundered ^H962 was 675,000 ^{H8337 H3967 H505 H7657 H505 H2568 H505} sheep ^H6629, 33 and 72,000 ^{H8147 H7657 H505} cattle ^H1241, 34 and 61,000 ^{H259 H8346 H505} donkeys ^H2543, 35 and of human ^H120 beings ^H5315, of the women ^H802 who ^H834 had not known ^H3045 man ^H2145 [fn]intimately ^H4904 H2145, all ^H3605 the persons ^H5315 were 32,000 ^{H8147 H7970 H505}.

36 And the half ^H4275, the portion ^H2506 of those who went ^H3318 out ^H3318 to war ^H6635, was as follows: the number ^H4557 of sheep ^H6629 was 337,500 ^{H7969 H3967 H505 H7970 H505 H7651 H505 H2568 H3967}; 37 and the levy ^H4371 of Yahweh ^H3068 from the sheep ^H6629 was 675 ^{H8337 H3967 H2568 H7657}; 38 and the cattle ^H1241 were 36,000 ^{H7970 H8337 H505}, from which the levy ^H4371 of Yahweh ^H3068 was 72 ^H8147 H7657; 39 and the donkeys ^H2543 were 30,500 ^{H7970 H505 H2568 H3967}, from which the levy ^H4371 of Yahweh ^H3068 was 61 ^H259 H8346; 40 and the human ^H120 beings ^H5315 were 16,000 ^{H8337 H6240 H505}, from whom the levy ^H4371 of Yahweh ^H3068 was 32 ^H8147 H7970 persons ^H5315. 41 And Moses ^H4872 gave ^H5414 the levy ^H4371, which was the contribution ^H8641 to Yahweh ^H3068, to Eleazar ^H499 the priest ^H3548, just ^H834 as Yahweh ^H3068 had commanded ^H6680 Moses ^H4872.

42 As for the sons ^H1121 of Israel’s ^H3478 half ^H4276, which ^H834 Moses ^H4872 [fn]separated ^H2673 from the men ^H376 who had gone ^H6633 to ^H6633 war ^H6633— 43 now the congregation’s ^H5712 half ^H4275 was 337,500 ^{H7969 H3967 H505 H7970 H505 H7651 H505 H2568 H3967} sheep ^H6629, 44 and 36,000 ^{H8337 H7970 H505} cattle ^H1241, 45 and 30,500 ^{H7970 H505 H2568 H3967} donkeys ^H2543, 46 and the human ^H120 beings ^H5315 were 16,000 ^{H8337 H6240 H505}— 47 and from the sons ^H1121 of Israel’s ^H3478 half ^H4276, Moses ^H4872 took ^H3947 one ^H259 drawn ^H270 out of every fifty ^H2572, both ^H4480 of man ^H120 and of animals ^H929, and gave ^H5414 them to the Levites ^H3881, who kept ^H8104 the responsibility ^H4931 of the tabernacle ^H4908 of Yahweh ^H3068, just ^H834 as Yahweh ^H3068 had commanded ^H6680 Moses ^H4872.

48 Then the officers ^H6485 who ^H834 were over the thousands ^H505 of the army ^H6635, the commanders ^H8269 of thousands ^H505 and the commanders ^H8269 of hundreds ^H3967, came ^H7126 near ^H7126 to Moses ^H4872, 49 and they said ^H559 to Moses ^H4872, “Your servants ^H5650 have taken ^H5375 a census ^H7218 of men ^H376 of war ^H4421 who ^H834 are in our charge ^H3027, and no ^H3808 man ^H376 of us is ^H6485 missing ^H6485. 50 So we have brought ^H7126 near ^H7126 as an offering ^H7133 to Yahweh ^H3068 what ^H834 each ^H376 man ^H376 found ^H4672—articles ^H3627 of gold ^H2091, armlets ^H685 and bracelets ^H6781, signet ^H2885 rings ^H2885, earrings ^H5694 and necklaces ^H3558—to make ^H3722 atonement ^H3722 for ourselves ^H5315 before ^H6440 Yahweh ^H3068.” 51 And Moses ^H4872 and Eleazar ^H499 the priest ^H3548 took ^H3947 the gold ^H2091 from them, all ^H3605 kinds of crafted ^H4639 articles ^H3627. 52 And all ^H3605 the gold ^H2091 from the contribution ^H8641 offering ^H8641 which ^H834 they raised ^H7311 up ^H7311 in offering to Yahweh ^H3068, from the commanders ^H8269 of thousands ^H505 and the commanders ^H8269 of hundreds ^H3967, was 16,750 ^{H8337 H6240 H505 H7651 H3967 H2572} [fn]shekels ^H8255. 53 The men ^H376 of war ^H6635 had taken ^H962 plunder ^H962, every ^H376 man ^H376 for himself. 54 So Moses ^H4872 and Eleazar ^H499 the priest ^H3548 took ^H3947 the gold ^H2091 from the commanders ^H8269 of thousands ^H505 and of hundreds ^H3967, and they brought ^H935 it to the tent ^H168 of meeting ^H4150 as a memorial ^H2146 for the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 before ^H6440 Yahweh ^H3068.
