Job’s Present State Is Humiliating
1 “But now H6258 those H6810 who are younger H6810 H3117 than H4480 I mock H7832 me,
Whose H834 fathers H1 I refused H3988 to put H7896 with the dogs H3611 of my flock H6629.
2 “Indeed H1571, what H4100 good was the strength H3581 of their hands H3027 to me?
Vigor H3624 had perished H6 from them.
3 “From poverty H2639 and famine H3720 they are gaunt H1565,
They who gnaw H6207 at the dry H6723 ground by night H570 in waste H7722 and desolation H4875,
4 Who pluck H6998 saltweed H4408 by the bushes H7880,
And whose food H3899 is the root H8328 of the broom H7574 shrub H7574.
5 “They are driven H1644 from the community H1460;
They shout H7321 against H5921 them as against a thief H1590,
6 So that they live H7931 on the slopes H6178 of ravines H5158,
In holes H2356 in the ground H6083 and among the rocks H3710.
7 “Among H996 the bushes H7880 they [fn]cry H5101 out;
Under H8478 the weeds H2738 they are gathered H5596 together H5596.
8 “Worthless H5036 [fn]fellows H1121, even H1571 [fn]those H1121 without H1097 a name H8034,
They were cast H5217 out H5217 from the land H776.
9 “And now H6258 I have become H1961 their [fn]taunt H5058,
And I have become H1961 a [fn]byword H4405 to them.
10 “They loathe H8581 me and stand H7368 aloof H7368 from me,
And they do not [fn]refrain H2820 from spitting H7536 in my face H6440.
11 “Because H3588 He has undone H6605 [fn]my [fn]bowstring H3499 and afflicted H6031 me,
They have cast H7971 off H7971 the bridle H7448 before H4480 H6440 me.
12 “On the right H3225 hand H3225 their [fn]mob H6526 arises H6965;
They push H7971 aside my feet H7272 and pile H5549 up H5549 their ways H734 of destruction H343 against H5921 me.
13 “They break H5420 up H5420 my path H5410,
They promote H3276 my destruction H1942;
No H3808 one restrains H6113 them.
14 “As through a wide H7342 gap H6556 they come H857,
[fn]Amid H8478 the storm H7722 they roll H1556 on H1556.
15 “Sudden H1091 terrors H1091 are turned H2015 upon H5921 me;
They chase H7291 away my dignity H5082 like the wind H7307,
And my [fn]prosperity H3444 has passed H5674 away H5674 like a cloud H5645.
16 “And now H6258 my soul H5315 is poured H8210 out H8210 [fn]within H5921 me;
Days H3117 of misery H6040 have seized H270 me.
17 “At night H3915 it pierces H5365 my bones H6106 [fn]within H4480 H5921 me,
And my gnawing H6207 pains do not rest H7901.
18 “By a great H7230 force H3581 my garment H3830 is distorted H2664;
It ties H247 me up H247 like the collar H6310 of my coat H3801.
19 “He has thrown H3384 me into the mire H2563,
And I have become H4911 like H4911 dust H6083 and ashes H665.
20 “I cry H7768 out H7768 to You for H7768 help H7768, but You do not answer H6030 me;
I stand H5975 up, and You turn H995 Your attention H995 against me.
21 “You have [fn]become H2015 cruel H393 to me;
With the strength H6108 of Your hand H3027 You persecute H7852 me.
22 “You lift H5375 me up H5375 to the wind H7307 and make me ride H7392 it;
And You dissolve H4127 me in a storm H8663.
23 “For I know H3045 that You will bring H7725 me to death H4194,
And to the house H1004 of meeting H4150 for all H3605 living H2416.
24 “Yet H389 does one in a heap H5856 of H5856 ruins H5856 not reach H7971 out H7971 with his hand H3027,
Or H518 in his disaster H6365 does he not cry H7769 out H7769 for H7769 help H7769?
25 “Have I not wept H1058 for the [fn]one whose life H3117 is hard H7186?
Was my soul H5315 not grieved H5701 for the needy H34?
26 “When H3588 I expected H6960 good H2896, evil H7451 came H935;
When I waited H3176 for light H216, darkness H652 came H935.
27 “[fn]I am seething H7570 within H4578 and cannot H3808 rest H1826;
Days H3117 of misery H6040 confront H6923 me.
28 “I go H1980 about H1980 [fn]mourning H6937 without H3808 comfort;
I stand H6965 up H6965 in the assembly H6951 and cry H7768 out H7768 for H7768 help H7768.
29 “I have become H1961 a brother H251 to jackals H8565,
And a companion H7453 of ostriches H1323 H3284.
30 “My skin H5785 turns H7835 black H7835 [fn]on me,
And my bones H6106 burn H2787 with [fn]fever H2721.
31 “Therefore my harp H3658 [fn]is turned H1961 to mourning H60,
And my flute H5748 to the sound H6963 of those who weep H1058.
