Exceed, Exceeding, Exceedingly:

"to throw over or beyond" (huper, "over," ballo, "to throw"), is translated "exceeding" in 2Cr 9:14; Eph 1:19; 2:7; "excelleth" (RV, "surpasseth") in 2Cr 3:10; "passeth" in Eph 3:19 ("surpasseth" might be the meaning here).

Exceed, Exceeding, Exceedingly:

"to be over and above, over a certain number or measure, to abound, exceed," is translated "exceed" in Mat 5:20; 2Cr 3:9.

properly the neuter plural of sphodros, "excessive, violent" (from a root indicating restlessness), signifies "very, very much, exceedingly," Mat 2:10; 17:6, "sore;" Mat 17:23; 18:31, RV, "exceeding," for AV, "very;" Mat 19:25; 26:22; 27:54, RV, "exceedingly" for AV, "greatly;" Mar 16:4, "very;" Luk 18:23 (ditto); Act 6:7, RV, "exceedingly," for AV, "greatly;" Rev 16:21.

Exceed, Exceeding, Exceedingly:

denotes "superabundantly" (huper, "over," ek, "from," perissos, "abundant"); in 1Th 3:10, "exceedingly;" Eph 3:20, "exceeding abundantly." Another form, huperekperissos (huper, and ek and No. 4), is used in 1Th 5:13 (in the best mss.), "exceeding highly." Cp. the verb huperperisseuo, "to abound more exceedingly," Rom 5:21; in 2Cr 7:4, "I overflow (with joy)," RV, for AV, "I am exceeding (joyful).

Notes:

(1) In Act 7:20, the phrase "exceeding fair" (asteios) is, lit., "fair to God" (see marg.).

(2) In Mat 26:7, barutimos (barus, "weighty," time "value"), is rendered "exceeding precious," RV, for AV, "very precious."

(3) In Mar 4:41, "they feared exceedingly" is, lit., "they feared a great fear." See FEAR.
