Martyr:
one who bears witness of the truth, and suffers death in the cause of Christ (Act 22:20; Rev 2:13; 17:6). In this sense Stephen was the first martyr. The Greek word so rendered in all other cases is translated "witness." (1.) In a court of justice (Mat 18:16; 26:65; Act 6:13; 7:58; Hbr 10:28; 1Ti 5:19). (2.) As of one bearing testimony to the truth of what he has seen or known (Luk 24:48; Act 1:8,22; Rom 1:9; 1Th 2:5,10; 1Jo 1:2).
The Blue Letter Bible ministry and the BLB Institute hold to the historical, conservative Christian faith, which includes a firm belief in the inerrancy of Scripture. Since the text and audio content provided by BLB represent a range of evangelical traditions, all of the ideas and principles conveyed in the resource materials are not necessarily affirmed, in total, by this ministry.
