Dispute, Disputer, Disputing:

denotes, primarily, "an inward reasoning, an opinion" (dia, "through," suggesting separation, logismos, "a reasoning"), e.g., Luk 2:35; 5:22; 6:8; then, "a deliberating, questioning," Luk 24:38; (more strongly) "a disputing," Phl 2:14; 1Ti 2:8 (AV, "doubtings"); in Rom 14:1, "disputations;" marg., "(not for decisions) of doubts" (lit., "not unto discussions of doubts," which is perhaps a suitable rendering). Cp. dialogizomai, "to reason."

akin to A, No. 1, primarily signifies "to think different things with oneself, to ponder;" then, with other persons, "to converse, argue, dispute;" it is translated "to dispute" in Mar 9:34 (for ver. 33, see No. 2), the RV and AV "had disputed" is somewhat unsuitable here, for the delinquency was not that they had wrangled, but that they had reasoned upon the subject at all; in Act 17:17, AV (RV, "reasoned," as in the AV of 18:4, 19); in 19:8, 9 (RV, "reasoning"); in 24:12, "disputing;" in Jud 1:9, "disputed."
