فَسَمِعَ جَمِيعُ إِسْرَائِيلَ قَوْلاً: «قَدْ ضَرَبَ شَاوُلُ نَصَبَ الْفِلِسْطِينِيِّينَ، وَأَيْضًا قَدْ أَنْتَنَ إِسْرَائِيلُ لَدَى الْفِلِسْطِينِيِّينَ». فَاجْتَمَعَ الشَّعْبُ وَرَاءَ شَاوُلَ إِلَى الْجِلْجَالِ.

فَذَاعَ نَبَأٌ أَنَّ شَاوُلَ هَاجَمَ حَامِيَةَ الْفِلِسْطِينِيِّينَ، وَأَنَّ الْفِلِسْطِينِيِّينَ عَازِمُونَ عَلَى الانْتِقَامِ مِنَ الإِسْرَائِيلِيِّينَ، فَتَحَرَّكَ جَيْشُ إِسْرَائِيلَ كُلُّهُ وَلَحِقَ بِشَاوُلَ فِي الْجِلْجَالِ.
