“When you lay siege to a city for a long time, fighting against it in order to capture it, do not destroy its trees by putting an ax to them, because you can get food from them. Do not cut them down. Are trees of the field human, to come under siege by you?
“When H3588 you besiege H6696 a city H5892 for a long H7227 time H3117, to make H3898 war H3898 against H5921 it in order to capture H8610 it, you shall not destroy H7843 its trees H6086 by swinging H5080 an axe H1631 against H5921 them; for you may eat H398 from them, so you shall not cut H3772 them down H3772. For [fn]is the tree H6086 of the field H7704 a human H120, that it should [fn]be besieged H4692 by you?

“When you besiege a city for [fn]a long time, making war against it in order to capture it, you shall not destroy its [fruit-bearing] trees by swinging an axe against them; for you may eat from them, and you shall not cut them down. For is the tree of the field a man, that it should be besieged (destroyed) by you?
«إِذَا حَاصَرْتَ مَدِينَةً أَيَّامًا كَثِيرَةً مُحَارِبًا إِيَّاهَا لِتَأْخُذَهَا، فَلاَ تُتْلِفْ شَجَرَهَا بِوَضْعِ فَأْسٍ عَلَيْهِ. إِنَّكَ مِنْهُ تَأْكُلُ. فَلاَ تَقْطَعْهُ. لأَنَّهُ هَلْ شَجَرَةُ الْحَقْلِ إِنْسَانٌ حَتَّى يَذْهَبَ قُدَّامَكَ فِي الْحِصَارِ؟
