Paul’s Defense before the Jews
1 “[fn]Brothers G435 G80 and fathers G3962, hear G191 my defense G627 which I now G3570 offer to you.”
2 And when they heard G191 that he was addressing G4377 them in the [fn]Hebrew G1446 dialect G1258, they became G3930 even more G3123 quiet G2271; and he *said G5346,
3 “I am G1510 a Jew G2453, born G1080 in Tarsus G5019 of Cilicia G2791, but brought G397 up G397 in this G3778 city G4172, educated G3811 [fn]under G3844 G3588 G4228 Gamaliel G1059, [fn]strictly G195 according G2596 to the Law G3551 of our fathers G3971, being G5225 zealous G2207 for God G2316 just G2531 as G2531 you all G3956 are today G4594.
4 I persecuted G1377 this G3778 Way G3598 to the death G2288, binding G1195 and putting G3860 both G5037 men G435 and women G1135 into prisons G5438, 5 as also G2532 the high G749 priest G749 and all G3956 the Council G4244 of G4244 the elders G4244 [fn]can testify G3140. From them I also G2532 received G1209 letters G1992 to the brothers G80, and started G4198 off for Damascus G1154 in order to bring G71 even G2532 those G3588 who were there G1566 to Jerusalem G2419 [fn]as prisoners G1210 to be punished G5097.
6 “But it happened G1096 that as I was G4198 on G4198 my way G4198, approaching G1448 Damascus G1154 at about G4012 noon G3314, a very G2425 bright G2425 light G5457 suddenly G1810 flashed G4015 from heaven G3772 all G4015 around G4015 me, 7 and I fell G4098 to the ground G1475 and heard G191 a voice G5456 saying G3004 to me, ‘Saul G4549, Saul G4549, why G5101 are you persecuting G1377 Me?’ 8 And I answered G611, ‘Who G5101 are You, Lord G2962?’ And He said G3004 to me, ‘I am G1510 Jesus G2424 the Nazarene G3480, whom G3739 you are persecuting G1377.’ 9 And those G3588 who G5101 were with me saw G2300 the light G5457, but did not [fn]understand G191 the voice G5456 of the One who was speaking G2980 to me. 10 And I said G3004, ‘What G5101 shall I do G4160, Lord G2962?’ And the Lord G2962 said G3004 to me, ‘Get G450 up G450 and go G4198 on G4198 into Damascus G1154, and there G2546 you will be told G2980 about G4012 everything G3956 that has been appointed G5021 for you to do G4160.’ 11 But since G5613 I could not see G1689 because G575 of the [fn]brightness G1391 of that light G5457, I came G2064 into Damascus G1154 being led G5496 by G5496 the G5496 hand G5496 by those G3588 who were with me.
12 “Now G1161 a certain G5100 Ananias G367, a man G435 who was devout G2126 by the standard G3358 of the Law G3551 and well G3140 spoken G3140 of by all G3956 the Jews G2453 who lived G2730 there, 13 came G2064 to me, and standing G2186 nearby G2186 he said G3004 to me, ‘Brother G80 Saul G4549, receive G308 your sight G308!’ And [fn]at that very G846 moment G5610 I looked G308 up G308 at him. 14 And he said G3004, ‘The God G2316 of our fathers G3962 has appointed G4400 you to know G1097 His will G2307 and to see G3708 the Righteous G1342 One G1342 and to hear G191 a [fn]message G5456 from His mouth G4750. 15 For you will be a witness G3144 for Him to all G3956 people G444 of what G3739 you have seen G3708 and heard G191. 16 Now G3568 why G5101 do you delay G3195? Get G450 up G450 and be G907 baptized G907, and wash G628 away G628 your sins G266 by calling G1941 on G1941 His name G3686.’
17 “It happened G1096 when I returned G5290 to Jerusalem G2419 and was praying G4336 in the temple G2413, that I fell G1096 into a trance G1611, 18 and I saw G3708 Him saying G3004 to me, ‘Hurry G4692 and get G1831 out G1831 of Jerusalem G2419 quickly G5034, because G1360 they will not accept G3858 your testimony G3141 about G4012 Me.’ 19 And I said G3004, ‘Lord G2962, they themselves G846 understand G1987 that in one synagogue G4864 after G2596 another G2596 I used to imprison G5439 and beat G1194 those G3588 who believed G4100 in You. 20 And when G3753 the blood G129 of Your witness G3144 Stephen G4736 was being shed G1632, I also G2532 was standing G2186 nearby G2186 and approving G4909, and watching G5442 over G5442 the cloaks G2440 of those G3588 who were killing G337 him.’ 21 And He said G3004 to me, ‘Go G4198! For I will send G1821 you far G3112 away G1821 to the Gentiles G1484.’”
22 They listened G191 to him up to this G3778 statement G3056, and then they raised G1869 their voices G5456 and said G3004, “Away G142 with such G5108 a man G5108 from the earth G1093, for he should G2520 not be G2520 allowed G2520 to live G2198!” 23 And as they were shouting G2905 and throwing G4496 off G4496 their cloaks G2440 and tossing G906 dust G2868 into the air G109, 24 the commander G5506 ordered G2753 that he be brought G1521 into the barracks G3925, saying G3004 that he was to be interrogated G426 by flogging G3148 so G2443 that G2443 he would find G1921 out G1921 the reason G156 why G1223 G3739 they were shouting G2019 against him that G3779 way G3779. 25 But when G5613 they stretched G4385 him out G4385 [fn]with straps G2438, Paul G3972 said G3004 to the centurion G1543 who was standing G2476 by, “Is it [fn]lawful G1832 for you to flog G3147 a man G444 who is a Roman G4514 and uncondemned G178?” 26 When the centurion G1543 heard G191 this, he went G4334 to the commander G5506 and told G518 him, saying G3004, “What G5101 are G3195 you about G3195 to G3195 do G4160? For this G3778 man G444 is a Roman G4514.” 27 The commander G5506 came G4334 and said G3004 to [fn]Paul, “Tell G3004 me, are you a Roman G4514?” And he said G5346, “Yes G3483.” 28 The commander G5506 answered G611, “I acquired G2932 this G3778 citizenship G4174 for a large G4183 sum G2774 of G2774 money G2774.” And Paul G3972 said G5346, “But I was actually G2532 born G1080 a citizen.” 29 Therefore G3767, those G3588 who were about G3195 to interrogate G426 him immediately G2112 backed G868 away G868 from him; and the commander G5506 also G2532 was G5399 afraid G5399 when he found G1921 out G1921 that he was a Roman G4514, and because G3754 he had [fn]put G1210 him in G1210 chains G1210.
30 Now G1161 on the next G1887 day G1887, wanting G1014 to know G1097 for certain G804 why G5101 Paul had been accused G2723 by the Jews G2453, he released G3089 him and ordered G2753 the chief G749 priests G749 and all G3956 the [fn]Council G4892 to assemble G4905, and he brought G2609 Paul G3972 down G2609 and placed G2476 him before G1519 them.
