"THE REASON HE CAME."
I. HE WAS MANIFESTED TO TAKE AWAY OUR SINS. VERSE 5.
A. John defines sin in verse 4. Sin is the transgression of the law.
1. David declared, "The law of the Lord is perfect."
2. The prophet Micah said, "He has shown you O man, what is good."
3. As I read the law of God, I must acknowledge that it is perfect, and that it is good.
4. I cannot find one commandment that I could challenge.
5. The Law forbids us to do those things that are destructive and harmful.
6. The Law commands us to do those things that are beneficial and good.
7. If I do things that are inherently destructive, I am transgressing the law.
8. If I fail to do those things that are good, I am transgressing the law.
9. To keep the law completely would be to live the perfect life.
a. You would live a life of love and joy.
b. It would bring you peace and prosperity.
c. It would give you a long, healthy life.
B. The entrance of sin into the world brought sorrow, suffering, and pain, but most of all, separation and alienation from God.
1. All of the sorrow and suffering and pain in life can be traced back to the entrance of sin in the world.
2. Before sin entered, Adam and Eve were living in paradise.
3. It was sin that forced them out of paradise.
4. With sin came the pain of childbirth.
5. With sin came the thorns and briars, so that man must earn his bread by the sweat of his brow.
6. "By one man, sin entered into the world, and death by sin, so death passed unto all men, for all sinned."
7. Because God said that the soul that sins shall surely die, we all came under the sentence of death.
8. Look at the world we live in today, all of the suffering, all the grief, all the strife and contention. You can trace it all back to sin.
C. Jesus was manifested to take away our sins. How did He take away our sins?
1. He took away our sins, by becoming sin for us.
2CO 5:21 For he hath made him [to be] sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
2. He took away our sin by taking our sin upon Himself.
ISA 53:4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
ISA 53:5 But he [was] wounded for our transgressions, [he was] bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace [was] upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
ISA 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.
3. He took away our sins by abolishing the law as a standard for righteousness. (Remember that sin is a transgression of the law.)
ROM 10:4 For Christ [is] the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.
a. At the end of his Corinthian letter Paul exclaimed,
1CO 15:55 O death, where [is] thy sting? O grave, where [is] thy victory?
1CO 15:56 The sting of death [is] sin; and the strength of sin [is] the law.
b. The law had brought us under the curse of death.
GAL 3:10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed [is] every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.
c. Through Jesus, we are no longer under the law.
ROM 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
d. Speaking of the handwriting and ordinances of the law, Paul wrote to the Colossians,
COL 2:13 And you, who were dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he made alive together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
COL 2:14 He blotted out the handwriting of ordinances that were against us, which were contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
COL 2:15 [And] having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
COL 2:16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath [days]:
COL 2:17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body [is] of Christ.
D. He was manifested to take away our sins, by fulfilling the righteous demands of the law for us, then imputing His righteousness to us who choose to believe in Him.
1. In Romans 8:4, Paul speaks of the righteousness of the law being fulfilled in us, not by us.
2. To the Philippians, Paul spoke of his past life as a Pharisee and all of his efforts to attain to the righteousness of the law by his good works. He then declared, "But those things that were gain to me, I counted loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ, and do count them as refuse, that I might know Him, and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, but the righteousness which is of Christ through faith."
II. FOR THIS PURPOSE THE SON OF GOD WAS MANIFESTED, THAT HE MIGHT DESTROY THE WORKS OF THE DEVIL.
A. What are the works of the devil?
1. We see the works of the devil in the man of Gadera, Mark's gospel tells us that when Jesus arrived at Gadera,
MAR 5:2 When he came out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,
MAR 5:3 Who had [his] dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains:
MAR 5:4 Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any [man] tame him.
MAR 5:5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones.
a. This is the mess that the devil had made of this man's life.
b. He had driven the man from his family and society, and had made his life miserable.
c. The devil will make your life miserable, and drive you from your family.
2. Mark tells us about a helpless father that came to Jesus and described the work of the devil in his son. He said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, who has an evil spirit, and wherever he takes him, he tears him: and he foams, and gnashes with his teeth, and pines away: and I spoke to Your disciples that they would cast him out; and they could not. Jesus answered him, and said, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him to me, and they brought him unto Him: and when he saw Him, immediately the spirit tore him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming, and He asked his father, How long has this been going on? The father answered,"Since he was a child. And many times it has cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if You can do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us.
a. The devil had controlled the motor functions of the boy's body and sought to destroy him by these attacks and by throwing him into the fire.
b. He was endeavoring to destroy the boy's life.
c. Make no mistake about it, the devil is seeking to destroy your life. He seeks to lure you to take the path that leads to death. "There is a way that seems right to man, but in the end the path is death."
3. Matthew tells us of a man that they brought to Jesus, who was possessed with a devil, he was blind, and mute: and he healed him, so that the man both spake and saw.
a. Here the work of the devil was in the physical realm, keeping the man from seeing and speaking.
b. We observe that the work of the devil is always destructive.
4. Jesus said that the devil has come to rob, kill, and destroy.
a. He will rob you of everything of true value and make your life destitute.
b. He will kill your relationship with God.
c. He will destroy your life forever.
d. He seeks to conscript you in his rebellion against God, and to join forces with him brings you into a common destiny with him, and one day you will hear the words of Jesus, "Depart from Me ye cursed into the everlasting fire that was prepared for the devil and his angels."
B. The ultimate work of the devil is spiritual death which is alienation from the life of God. Hebrews 2:14 declares that Jesus came to destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil.
1. He destroyed the work of the devil by giving us life. He said "I have come that you might have life, and that more abundantly."
2. John testified, "He that has the Son has life, but he who has not the Son has not life, but the wrath of God abides on him."
3. Jesus said, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him, should not perish, but have everlasting life."
4. That is the gospel truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help me God.
