"THE LIVING HOPE."
I. THE IMPORTANCE OF HOPE.
A. People who lose hope, 30% greater chance of getting cancer.
1. Breast cancer grew more rapidly when certain chemical was in body.
a. This chemical reduced when hope stimulated.
B. Korean war examined the bodies of men who died fighting or running, and men who were just found dead in fox holes with no apparent reason.
1. Fighting or running.
a. Heart and blood vessels constricted.
2. Unknown.
a. Heart relaxed.
C. Voodoo deaths.
1. They believed they were going to die.
2. They gave up hope of living.
a. Blood pressure slowly dropped.
b. Heart gradually slowed till it stopped.
D. Norwegian wharf rats.
1. Placed in glass chamber half filled with water and water sprayed in.
2. Died in 17 minutes.
3. Others they rescued just before they drowned.
4. Later when placed in glass chamber, they survived for 36 hours.
II. WORLD DOESN'T OFFER MUCH HOPE TODAY.
A. We have no viable alternate energy source.
B. We have no answers for our economic chaos.
C. Russia's military strength hopelessly overpowers us.
III. WE AS CHRISTIANS HAVE A LIVING HOPE.
A. God is in control of all the circumstances of our lives.
1. He can sustain us through anything.
2. He will watch out for us.
B. "To die is to be with the Lord."
1. I have His promise of eternal life.
2. A quality of life as well as quantity.
IV. THE BASIS OF OUR HOPE: "THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS CHRIST FROM THE DEAD."
A. Jesus made great claims.
1. If we would believe on Him we would become Sons of God.
2. As Sons, our Heavenly Father would watch over us and keep us.
a. We wouldn't have to worry about food, clothing.
3. If we believed in Him, we would never die.
4. In His Father's house were many mansions.
B. All of these would be empty promises had He not risen.
1. We would be like the rest of the world in a state of hopelessness.
