I. THE COMMOTION IN THE CITY.
A. The cause of the commotion.
1. Vs. 44,46,48,49,52 "the word of God."
2. God's truth had been proclaimed.
a. One God.
b. His overruling providence.
c. His unfailing grace.
d. The cross of Jesus.
e. The resurrection.
f. Forgiveness of sins.
g. Justification.
3. He was touching on the deepest issues of life.
a. The truth about God.
b. Age abiding life.
1. Not just quantity, but quality.
c. The fact of sin.
d. The possibility of forgiveness.
4. He did not talk of material things.
a. The need of social reform.
b. The plight of the poor grape pickers.
c. The need of better housing.
d. The evils of drink.
5. The message was not addressed to the intellect.
a. A comparison of the Greek and Hebrew philosophies.
6. The deepest issues:
a. God, life, sin, forgiveness.
II. THE RESULTING CONTRASTS.
A. Reactions.
1. They contradicted and blasphemed.
2. They glorified the Word of God.
B. Contrasting attitudes.
1. Filled with jealousy.
2. Filled with gladness.
C. Contrasting effects.
1. Counted unworthy of everlasting life.
2. Ordained to eternal life.
III. THE REJECTION IN THE CITY.
A. Why did they reject?
1. Prejudice.
a. It was not an intellectual rejection.
2. They saw the gospel being preached to the gentiles.
a. They had looked upon the gentiles as chaff for the fire.
b. Paul looked upon them as wheat for the harvest.
3. Blinded by prejudice they closed their mind.
a. The open mind leads to life.
b. The closed mind to death.
IV. "AND AS MANY AS WERE ORDAINED TO ETERNAL LIFE BELIEVED."
A. It isn't fair that God didn't ordain all.
1. On what basis did God ordain?
V. THEY WERE FILLED WITH JOY AND WITH THE HOLY GHOST.
