I. SIMON'S BACKGROUND.
A. A sorcerer.
1. He bewitched the people.
2. Skilled in the arts of magic.
3. Secrets of the ancients.
B. A leader.
1. Followed by deceived people.
2. They thought him to be the power of God.
a. He made himself as such.
3. Regarded by people. (note: "Satan shall throw strong delusion, people believe a lie rather than truth.").
II. SIMON'S OBSERVATIONS.
A. The miracles of Philip.
1. The resultant following of the people.
2. The resultant joy in the people.
B. The power of the Apostles.
1. By the laying on of hands, Holy Ghost given.
III. SIMON'S DESIRES.
A. Believed, was baptized, and continued with Philip.
1. Question not judge motives.
a. It could be finding someone with greater power and following, he went along to gain secrets.
b. He wanted still to be in limelight.
1. False basis for call into ministry.
B. Wanted to buy gift of Spirit with money.
1. Common practice to sell secrets in legerdemain.
2. Those today trying to buy favors.
a. Too many willing to be influenced by money.
b. Simon selling of indulgences.
IV. SIMON'S ERRORS.
A. Desire to be looked up to still.
1. Christ said "must be servant of all."
2. "He that exalteth himself shall be abased."
B. Thinking gifts of God can be purchased.
1. Those who by good works try to buy.
2. Not accepting grace.
V. SIMON'S GUILTY VERDICT.
A. "Thy heart is not right with God."
1. Outward signs of baptism, etc., are not as important as heart.
2. Physical acts cannot replace spiritual.
B. In gall of bitterness and bond of iniquity.
VI. SIMON'S COURSE OF ACTION.
A. Repent.
B. Pray for forgiveness.
