I. THE MANY THINGS SAID CONCERNING THE CHILD THAT WAS TO BE BORN.
A. She was to conceive in her womb. That is while she was still a virgin.
1. Thus one of the first prophecies of the messiah in the Bible would be fulfilled. In the Garden of Eden when Eve confessed her sin declaring the serpent had beguiled her, God said to the serpent, "And I shall put enmity between you and the woman, and It shall bruise your head, and you will bruise His heel." Genesis 3:15
a. The woman does not have the seed. She has the ovum that is fertilized by the male seed.
b. Thus there is at least a hint of the virgin birth of the deliverer that shall bruise the head or power of Satan.
2. Isaiah declares it more clearly. "Behold a virgin shall conceive and bare a Son and shall call His name Immanuel.
3. Mary is being informed by the angel Gabriel that she has been chosen by God for this special honor of bringing the Son of God into this world.
B. She was to bring forth a Son and call His name Jesus.
1. The name Jesus is the Greek for the Hebrew name Joshua which in Hebrew means "Jehovah is salvation."
2. Later when the angel came to Joseph to allay his doubts concerning the pregnant condition of the girl he was espoused to he told Joseph not to fear to take Mary as his wife, for that which was conceived in her was from the Holy Spirit, and she was to have a Son who should be named Jesus, "For He shall save His people from their sins."
3. So His name implies His mission. He came as the Savior of the world, to save man from consequences of his sin.
a. Later Jesus was to declare, "For the Son of man has come to seek and to save that which was lost."
b. At His birth the angels announced the shepherds that unto them was born that day in the city of David, a Savior which was the Messiah, the Lord.
c. The people of Samaria said to the woman who met Jesus at the well, "Now we believe not because of your saying but we have heard Him for ourselves, and know indeed that this is the Messiah, the Savior of the world.
d. Paul writing to Timothy concerning Jesus Christ said,
2TI 1:9 Who hath saved us, and called [us] with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,
2TI 1:10 But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:
C. He shall be great.
1. I cannot tell you how great Jesus is. He created the universe.
a. John writing about Him said,
JOH 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
JOH 1:2 The same was in the beginning with God.
JOH 1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
JOH 1:4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
JOH 1:5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
b. Paul writing about Him said,
COL 1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether [they be] thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
2. He is the atomic glue that holds the atoms together. Paul said "By Him are all things held together."
3. He has provided us with a great salvation.
HEB 2:2 For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward;
HEB 2:3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard [him];
4. His name is above every name.
Phl 2:9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
Phl 2:10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of [things] in heaven, and [things] in earth, and [things] under the earth;
Phl 2:11 And [that] every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ [is] Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
D. He shall be called the Son of the Highest.
1. In verse 35 the angel went on to say, That holy One that shall be born of you will be called the Son of God.
2. The prophet Isaiah said,
ISA 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
a. A Son is given, who gave His Son?
b. John tells us that God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John also wrote in his first letter, "In this God manifested His love toward us in that He sent His only begotten Son into the world that we might live through Him.
c. Paul wrote to the Galatians, "But in the fullness of time God sent forth His Son into the world, made of a woman."
3. John also said,
a. "For this cause was the Son of God manifested that He might destroy the works of the devil."
b. That whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in Him and he in God.
c. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God.
4. Paul opened his letter to the Romans,
ROM 1:1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called [to be] an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,
ROM 1:2 (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,)
ROM 1:3 Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh;
ROM 1:4 And declared [to be] the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:
E. "And the Lord shall give Him the throne of His father David."
1. God promised to David that his seed would sit on the throne forever. David rightly interpreted this is to mean that the Messiah would be one of his descendants.
2. Isaiah prophesied concerning the Messiah,
ISA 9:7 Of the increase of [his] government and peace [there shall be] no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.
F. That He shall reign forever, and of His kingdom there should be no end.
1. The book of Revelation tells us,
REV 11:15 And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become [the kingdoms] of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.
2. Daniel in interpreting the dream of Nebuchadnezzer said concerning the Stone that destroyed the governments of man,
Dan 2:44 And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, [but] it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.
3. He later prophesied of the Messiah saying,
Dan 7:14 And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion [is] an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom [that] which shall not be destroyed.
4. In the Lord's prayer we acknowledge, "For Thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever."
