Barnes studied with Horatio Parker at Yale University. He played the organ at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the First Presbyterian Church in Santa Monica, California. He was also a composer, producing organ symphonies, arrangements, and books of religious music.
