Mason graduated from Syracuse University in 1911. He went on to serve as organist at Auburn Theological Seminary (1916-1939), instructor of music (1917-1935), and assistant professor of fine arts and religion (1935-1939). While at Auburn, he did graduate work at Boston University (1924-1926), and played the organ at the First Presbyterian Church. He later served as organist at the Second Presbyterian Church of Auburn for 27 years.
