In 1702, Schmolck became pastor of Schweidnitz, Silesia, one of the three Friedenskirchen (Protestant churches) in Catholic Silesia. He became much involved in polemic struggles with the Catholic Gegenreformation (counter-reformation). In the last years of his life he became blind and paralyzed.
