Leah said, “God has rewarded me for giving my slave to my husband,” and she named him Issachar.[fn]
Judah recognized them and said, “She is more in the right[fn] than I, since I did not give her to my son Shelah.” And he did not know her intimately again.
“Pharaoh's cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes, squeezed them into Pharaoh's cup, and placed the cup in Pharaoh's hand.”
The LORD instructed Moses, “When you go back to Egypt, make sure you do before Pharaoh all the wonders that I have put within your power. But I will harden his heart[fn] so that he won't let the people go.
“It must not be baked with yeast; I have assigned it as their portion from my food offerings. It is especially holy, like the sin offering and the guilt offering.
“I have taken from the Israelites the breast of the presentation offering and the thigh of the contribution from their fellowship sacrifices, and have assigned them to the priest Aaron and to his sons as a permanent portion[fn] from the Israelites.”
“At that time we took possession of this land. I gave to the Reubenites and Gadites the area extending from Aroer by the Arnon Valley, and half the hill country of Gilead along with its cities.
“I gave to half the tribe of Manasseh the rest of Gilead and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og. The entire region of Argob, the whole territory of Bashan, used to be called the land of the Rephaim.
“But your wives, dependents, and livestock — I know that you have a lot of livestock — will remain in the cities I have given you
“until the LORD gives rest to your brothers as he has to you, and they also take possession of the land the LORD your God is giving them across the Jordan. Then each of you may return to his possession that I have given you.
“Then you will say in the presence of the LORD your God:
I have taken the consecrated portion out of my house; I have also given it to the Levites, resident aliens, fatherless children, and widows, according to all the commands you gave me. I have not violated or forgotten your commands.
“I have not eaten any of it while in mourning, or removed any of it while unclean, or offered any of it for the dead. I have obeyed the LORD my God; I have done all you commanded me.
“We took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh.
“When all these things happen to you — the blessings and curses I have set before you — and you come to your senses while you are in all the nations where the LORD your God has driven you,
“But I took your father Abraham from the region beyond the Euphrates River, led him throughout the land of Canaan, and multiplied his descendants. I gave him Isaac,
“and to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. I gave the hill country of Seir to Esau as a possession.
“ ‘Jacob and his sons, however, went down to Egypt.
“I rescued you from the power of Egypt and the power of all who oppressed you. I drove them out before you and gave you their land.
“I was sure you hated her,” her father said, “so I gave her to one of the men who accompanied you. Isn't her younger sister more beautiful than she is? Why not take her instead? ”
“Out of all the tribes of Israel, I chose your house[fn] to be my priests, to offer sacrifices on my altar, to burn incense, and to wear an ephod in my presence. I also gave your forefather's family all the Israelite food offerings.
I will cut off Israel from the land I gave them, and I will reject[fn] the temple I have sanctified for my name. Israel will become an object of scorn and ridicule among all the peoples.
“I will never again cause the feet of the Israelites to wander from the land I gave to their ancestors if only they will be careful to do all I have commanded them — the whole law that my servant Moses commanded them.”
However, if you turn away and abandon my statutes and my commands that I have set before you and if you go and serve other gods and bow in worship to them,
then I will uproot Israel from the soil that I gave them, and this temple that I have sanctified for my name I will banish from my presence; I will make it an object of scorn and ridicule among all the peoples.
Then Amaziah said to the man of God, “What should I do about the 7,500 pounds of silver I gave to Israel's division? ”
The man of God replied, “The LORD is able to give you much more than this.”
“I will never again remove the feet of the Israelites from the land where I stationed your[fn] ancestors, if only they will be careful to do all I have commanded them through Moses — all the law, statutes, and judgments.”
During the month of Nisan in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when wine was set before him, I took the wine and gave it to the king. I had never been sad in his presence,

I applied my mind to examine and explore through wisdom all that is done under heaven. God has given people[fn] this miserable task to keep them occupied.
I applied my mind to know wisdom and knowledge, madness and folly; I learned that this too is a pursuit of the wind.
All this I have seen, applying my mind to all the work that is done under the sun, at a time when one person has authority over another to his harm.

Indeed, I took all this to heart and explained it all: The righteous, the wise, and their works are in God's hands. People don't know whether to expect love or hate. Everything lies ahead of them.
“This is my servant; I strengthen him,
this is my chosen one; I delight in him.
I have put my Spirit on him;
he will bring justice[fn] to the nations.
“Wild animals —
jackals and ostriches — will honor me,
because I provide water in the wilderness,
and rivers in the desert,
to give drink to my chosen people.
“So I defiled the officers of the sanctuary,
and set Jacob apart for destruction
and Israel for scorn.
“I was angry with my people;
I profaned my possession,
and I handed them over to you.
You showed them no mercy;
you made your yoke very heavy on the elderly.
But I myself said: I have labored in vain,
I have spent my strength for nothing and futility;
yet my vindication is with the LORD,
and my reward is with my God.
“I have seen his ways, but I will heal him;
I will lead him and restore comfort
to him and his mourners,
“As for me, this is my covenant with them,” says the LORD: “My Spirit who is on you, and my words that I have put in your mouth, will not depart from your mouth, or from the mouths of your children, or from the mouths of your children's children, from now on and forever,” says the LORD.
“Will I bring a baby to the point of birth
and not deliver it? ”
says the LORD;
“or will I who deliver, close the womb? ”
says your God.
“I[fn] observed that it was because unfaithful Israel had committed adultery that I had sent her away and had given her a certificate of divorce. Nevertheless, her treacherous sister Judah was not afraid but also went and prostituted herself.
I will allow you to live in this place, the land I gave to your ancestors long ago and forever.
“what I did to Shiloh I will do to the house that bears my name, the house in which you trust, the place that I gave you and your ancestors.
The LORD said, “It is because they abandoned my instruction, which I set before them, and did not obey my voice or walk according to it.
I have abandoned my house;
I have deserted my inheritance.
I have handed the love of my life
over to her enemies.
“but rather, ‘As the LORD lives who brought the Israelites from the land of the north and from all the other lands where he had banished them.' For I will return them to their land that I gave to their ancestors.
“I will surely forget you.[fn] I will throw you away from my presence — both you and the city that I gave you and your ancestors.
“I will send the sword, famine, and plague against them until they have perished from the land I gave to them and their ancestors.”
“He announced, ‘Turn, each of you, from your evil way of life and from your evil deeds. Live in the land the LORD gave to you and your ancestors long ago and forever.
“You are to say to them, ‘This is what the LORD says: If you do not listen to me by living according to my instruction that I set before you
“So now I have placed all these lands under the authority of my servant Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon. I have even given him the wild animals to serve him.
“for look, the days are coming” — this is the LORD's declaration — “when I will restore the fortunes[fn] of my people Israel and Judah,” says the LORD. “I will restore them to the land I gave to their ancestors and they will possess it.”
“and gave the purchase agreement to Baruch son of Neriah, son of Mahseiah. I did this in the sight of my cousin[fn] Hanamel, the witnesses who had signed the purchase agreement, and all the Judeans sitting in the guard's courtyard.
I set jars filled with wine and some cups before the sons of the house of the Rechabites and said to them, “Drink wine! ”
“Time and time again[fn] I have sent you all my servants the prophets, proclaiming, “Turn, each one from his evil way, and correct your actions. Stop following other gods to serve them. Live in the land that I gave you and your ancestors.” But you did not pay attention or obey me.
“They have not become humble to this day, and they have not feared or followed my instruction or my statutes that I set before you and your ancestors.
This is what the LORD says: I am about to hand over Pharaoh Hophra, Egypt's king, to his enemies, to those who intend to take his life, just as I handed over Judah's King Zedekiah to Babylon's King Nebuchadnezzar, who was his enemy, the one who intended to take his life.' ”
“I put a ring in your nose, earrings on your ears, and a beautiful crown on your head.
“Then I gave them my statutes and explained my ordinances to them — the person who does them will live by them.
“I also gave them my Sabbaths to serve as a sign between me and them, so that they would know that I am the LORD who consecrates them.
“However, I swore to them in the wilderness that I would not bring them into the land I had given them — the most beautiful of all lands, flowing with milk and honey —
“I also gave them statutes that were not good and ordinances they could not live by.
“You will live in the land that I gave your ancestors; you will be my people, and I will be your God.
So I turned my attention to the Lord God to seek him by prayer and petitions, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes.
While he was saying these words to me, I turned my face toward the ground and was speechless.
I will plant them on their land,
and they will never again be uprooted
from the land I have given them.
The LORD your God has spoken.
“Notice the stone I have set before Joshua; on that one stone are seven eyes. I will engrave an inscription on it” — this is the declaration of the LORD of Armies — “and I will take away the iniquity of this land in a single day.
