Then they gave Jacob all their foreign gods and their earrings, and Jacob hid them under the oak near Shechem.

So Moses spoke to the Israelites, and each of their leaders gave him a staff, one for each of the leaders of their tribes, twelve staffs in all. Aaron's staff was among them.

They burned the city and everything in it, but they put the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron into the treasury of the LORD's house.

When they had finished distributing the land into its territories, the Israelites gave Joshua son of Nun an inheritance among them.

So the Israelites, by the LORD's command, gave the Levites these cities with their pasturelands from their inheritance.

The Israelites gave these cities with their pasturelands around them to the Levites by lot, as the LORD had commanded through Moses.

The Israelites gave them:

Shechem, the city of refuge for the one who commits manslaughter, with its pasturelands in the hill country of Ephraim, Gezer with its pasturelands,

Each of these cities had its own surrounding pasturelands; this was true for all the cities.

The Israelites took their daughters as wives for themselves, gave their own daughters to their sons, and worshiped their gods.

So they gave him seventy pieces of silver from the temple of Baal-berith.[fn] Abimelech used it to hire worthless and reckless men, and they followed him.

Benjamin returned at that time, and Israel gave them the women they had kept alive from Jabesh-gilead. But there were not enough for them.

Saul was furious and resented this song. “They credited tens of thousands to David,” he complained, “but they only credited me with thousands. What more can he have but the kingdom? ”

Then the priest Jehoiada took a chest, bored a hole in its lid, and set it beside the altar on the right side as one enters the LORD's temple; the priests who guarded the threshold put into the chest all the silver that was brought to the LORD's temple.

Then they would give the weighed silver to those doing the work ​— ​those who oversaw the LORD's temple. They in turn would pay it out to those working on the LORD's temple ​— ​the carpenters, the builders,

They have thrown their gods into the fire, for they were not gods but made by human hands ​— ​wood and stone. So they have destroyed them.

Then the court secretary Shaphan went to the king and reported,[fn] “Your servants have emptied out the silver that was found in the temple and have given it to those doing the work ​— ​those who oversee the LORD's temple.”

Then he did away with the idolatrous priests the kings of Judah had appointed to burn incense at the high places in the cities of Judah and in the areas surrounding Jerusalem. They had burned incense to Baal, and to the sun, moon, constellations, and all the stars in the sky.

He did away with the horses that the kings of Judah had dedicated to the sun. They had been at the entrance of the LORD's temple in the precincts by the chamber of Nathan-melech, the eunuch. He also burned the chariots of the sun.

So Jehoiakim gave the silver and the gold to Pharaoh, but at Pharaoh's command he taxed the land to give it. He exacted the silver and the gold from the common people, each according to his assessment, to give it to Pharaoh Neco.

They were given Hebron in the land of Judah and its surrounding pasturelands,

So the Israelites gave these towns and their pasturelands to the Levites.

Shechem (a city of refuge) with its pasturelands in the hill country of Ephraim, Gezer and its pasturelands,

For the service of God's house they gave 185 tons[fn] of gold and 10,000 gold coins,[fn] 375 tons[fn] of silver, 675 tons[fn] of bronze, and 4,000 tons[fn] of iron.

Those from every tribe of Israel who had determined in their hearts to seek the LORD their God followed the Levites to Jerusalem to sacrifice to the LORD, the God of their ancestors.

So they arrested her, and she went by the entrance of the Horse Gate to the king's palace, where they put her to death.

All the leaders and all the people rejoiced, brought the tax, and put it in the chest until it was full.

The Ammonites[fn] paid tribute to Uzziah, and his fame spread as far as the entrance of Egypt, for God made him very powerful.

Then the men who were designated by name took charge of the captives and provided clothes for their naked ones from the plunder. They clothed them, gave them sandals, food and drink, dressed their wounds, and provided donkeys for all the feeble. The Israelites brought them to Jericho, the City of Palms, among their brothers. Then they returned to Samaria.

“For our ancestors were unfaithful and did what is evil in the sight of the LORD our God. They abandoned him, turned their faces away from the LORD's dwelling place, and turned their backs on him.[fn]

Hezekiah rested with his ancestors and was buried on the ascent to the tombs of David's descendants. All Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem paid him honor at his death. His son Manasseh became king in his place.

So they went to the high priest Hilkiah and gave him the silver brought into God's temple. The Levites and the doorkeepers had collected it from Manasseh, Ephraim, and from the entire remnant of Israel, and from all Judah, Benjamin, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

“They have emptied out the silver that was found in the LORD's temple and have given it to the overseers and to those doing the work.”

His officials also donated willingly for the people, the priests, and the Levites. Hilkiah, Zechariah, and Jehiel, chief officials of God's temple, gave twenty-six hundred Passover sacrifices and three hundred cattle for the priests.

Jeremiah chanted a dirge over Josiah, and all the male and female singers still speak of Josiah in their dirges today. They established them as a statute for Israel, and indeed they are written in the Dirges.

Then King Neco of Egypt made Jehoahaz's brother Eliakim king over Judah and Jerusalem and changed Eliakim's name to Jehoiakim. But Neco took his brother Jehoahaz and brought him to Egypt.

Based on what they could give, they gave 61,000 gold coins,[fn] 6,250 pounds[fn] of silver, and 100 priestly garments to the treasury for the project.

They gave money to the stonecutters and artisans, and gave food, drink, and oil to the people of Sidon and Tyre, so they would bring cedar wood from Lebanon to Joppa by sea, according to the authorization given them by King Cyrus of Persia.

They also delivered the king's edicts to the royal satraps and governors of the region west of the Euphrates, so that they would support the people and the house of God.

They pledged[fn] to send their wives away, and being guilty, they offered a ram from the flock for their guilt;

Some of the family heads contributed to the project. The governor gave 1,000 gold coins,[fn] 50 bowls, and 530 priestly garments to the treasury.

They refused to listen

and did not remember your wonders

you performed among them.

They became stiff-necked and appointed a leader

to return to their slavery in Egypt.[fn]

But you are a forgiving God,

gracious and compassionate,

slow to anger and abounding in faithful love,

and you did not abandon them.

You warned them to turn back to your law,

but they acted arrogantly

and would not obey your commands.

They sinned against your ordinances,

which a person will live by if he does them.

They stubbornly resisted,[fn]

stiffened their necks, and would not obey.

Instead, they gave me gall for my food,

and for my thirst

they gave me vinegar to drink.

The clouds poured down water.

The storm clouds thundered;

your arrows flashed back and forth.

The fig tree ripens its figs;

the blossoming vines give off their fragrance.

Arise, my darling.

Come away, my beautiful one.

The mandrakes give off a fragrance,

and at our doors is every delicacy,

both new and old.

I have treasured them up for you, my love.

The young lions have roared at him;

they have roared loudly.

They have laid waste his land.

His cities are in ruins, without inhabitants.

Warn the nations: Look!

Proclaim to Jerusalem:

Those who besiege are coming

from a distant land;

they raise their voices

against the cities of Judah.

Many shepherds have destroyed my vineyard;

they have trampled my plot of land.

They have turned my desirable plot

into a desolate wasteland.

Then, after depositing the scroll in the chamber of Elishama the scribe, the officials came to the king at the courtyard and reported everything in the hearing of the king.

Jeremiah was going about his daily tasks[fn] among the people, for he had not yet been put into the prison.

But Ebed-melech, a Cushite court official in the king's palace, heard Jeremiah had been put into the cistern. While the king was sitting at the Benjamin Gate,

had Jeremiah brought from the guard's courtyard and turned him over to Gedaliah son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, to take him home. So he settled among his own people.

“There is a cry from Heshbon to Elealeh; they make their voices heard as far as Jahaz ​— ​from Zoar to Horonaim and Eglath-shelishiyah ​— ​because even the Waters of Nimrim have become desolate.

All her people groan

while they search for bread.

They have traded their precious belongings for food

in order to stay alive.

LORD, look and see

how I have become despised.

The Lord has rejected his altar,

repudiated his sanctuary;

he has handed the walls of her palaces

over to the enemy.

They have raised a shout in the house of the LORD

as on the day of an appointed festival.

“You will all know that I am the LORD when their slain lie among their idols around their altars, on every high hill, on all the mountaintops, and under every green tree and every leafy oak ​— ​the places where they offered pleasing aromas to all their idols.

“Then the nations from the surrounding provinces

set out against him.

They spread their net over him;

he was caught in their pit.

“Men of Persia, Lud, and Put

were in your army, serving as your warriors.

They hung shields and helmets in you;

they gave you splendor.

“ ‘Tarshish was your trading partner because of your abundant wealth of every kind. They exchanged silver, iron, tin, and lead for your merchandise.

“Aram[fn] was your trading partner because of your numerous products. They exchanged turquoise,[fn] purple and embroidered cloth, fine linen, coral,[fn] and rubies[fn] for your merchandise.

“Vedan[fn] and Javan from Uzal[fn] dealt in your merchandise; wrought iron, cassia, and aromatic cane were exchanged for your goods.

“The merchants of Sheba and Raamah traded with you. For your merchandise they exchanged the best of all spices and all kinds of precious stones as well as gold.

“This happened so that no trees planted beside water would become great in height and set their tops among the clouds, and so that no other well-watered trees would reach them in height. For they have all been consigned to death, to the underworld, among the people[fn] who descend to the Pit.

“ ‘This is what the Lord GOD says: Certainly in my burning zeal I speak against the rest of the nations and all of Edom, who took[fn] my land as their own possession with wholehearted rejoicing and utter contempt so that its pastureland became[fn] plunder.

“Whenever they placed their threshold next to my threshold and their doorposts beside my doorposts, with only a wall between me and them, they were defiling my holy name by the detestable acts they committed. So I destroyed them in my anger.

“In his place a despised person will arise; royal honors will not be given to him, but he will come during a time of peace[fn] and seize the kingdom by intrigue.

Their actions do not allow them

to return to their God,

for a spirit of promiscuity is among them,

and they do not know the LORD.

Don't be afraid, wild animals,

for the wilderness pastures have turned green,

the trees bear their fruit,

and the fig tree and grapevine yield their riches.

They cast lots for my people;

they bartered a boy for a prostitute

and sold a girl for wine to drink.

“But they refused to pay attention and turned a stubborn shoulder; they closed their ears so they could not hear.
