The LORD God said, “Since the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil, he must not reach out, take from the tree of life, eat, and live forever.”
“Get out of the way! ” they said, adding, “This one came here as an alien, but he's acting like a judge! Now we'll do more harm to you than to them.” They put pressure on Lot and came up to break down the door.
Abraham looked up and saw a ram[fn] caught in the thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram and offered it as a burnt offering in place of his son.
As she was giving birth, one of them put out his hand, and the midwife took it and tied a scarlet thread around it, announcing, “This one came out first.”
“If you are honest, let one of you[fn] be confined to the guardhouse, while the rest of you go and take grain to relieve the hunger of your households.
At the place where they lodged for the night, one of them opened his sack to get feed for his donkey, and he saw his silver there at the top of his bag.
“We were twelve brothers, sons of the same[fn] father. One is no longer living, and the youngest is now with our father in the land of Canaan.'
“One is gone from me — I said he must have been torn to pieces — and I have never seen him again.
The water came back and covered the chariots and horsemen, plus the entire army of Pharaoh that had gone after them into the sea. Not even one of them survived.
When Moses's hands grew heavy, they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat down on it. Then Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other so that his hands remained steady until the sun went down.
“Make one cherub at one end and one cherub at the other end. At its two ends, make the cherubim of one piece with the mercy seat.
“The guilt offering is like the sin offering; the law is the same for both. It belongs to the priest who makes atonement with it.
“Take fine flour and bake it into twelve loaves; each loaf is to be made with four quarts.[fn]
“You are to consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim freedom in the land for all its inhabitants. It will be your Jubilee, when each of you is to return to his property and each of you to his clan.
“he has the right of redemption after he has been sold. One of his brothers may redeem him.
These are the men Moses and Aaron registered, with the assistance of the twelve leaders of Israel; each represented his ancestral family.
The LORD told Moses, “Each day have one leader present his offering for the dedication of the altar.”
“If an alien resides with you and wants to observe the Passover to the LORD, he is to do it according to the Passover statute and its ordinances. You are to apply the same statute to both the resident alien and the native of the land.”
“The assembly is to have the same statute for both you and the resident alien as a permanent statute throughout your generations. You and the alien will be alike before the LORD.
“The same law and the same ordinance will apply to both you and the alien who resides with you.”
“You are to have the same law for the person who acts in error, whether he is an Israelite or an alien who resides among you.
But Moses and Aaron fell facedown and said, “God, God who gives breath to all,[fn] when one man sins, will you vent your wrath on the whole community? ”
For the LORD had said to them that they would all die in the wilderness. None of them was left except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
and told him, “Your servants have taken a census of the fighting men under our command, and not one of us is missing.
“If anyone kills a person, the murderer is to be put to death based on the word of witnesses. But no one is to be put to death based on the testimony of one witness.
“One witness cannot establish any iniquity or sin against a person, whatever that person has done. A fact must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.
“When brothers live on the same property[fn] and one of them dies without a son, the wife of the dead man may not marry a stranger outside the family. Her brother-in-law is to take her as his wife, have sexual relations with her, and perform the duty of a brother-in-law for her.
How could one pursue a thousand,
or two put ten thousand to flight,
unless their Rock had sold them,
unless the LORD had given them up?
The LORD also handed it and its king over to Israel. He struck it down, putting everyone in it to the sword, and left no survivors in it. He treated Libnah's king as he had the king of Jericho.
So Joshua replied to Joseph's family (that is, Ephraim and Manasseh), “You have many people and great strength. You will not have just one allotment,
They sent ten leaders with him — one family leader for each tribe of Israel. All of them were heads of their ancestral families among the clans of Israel.
“Wasn't Achan son of Zerah unfaithful regarding what was set apart for destruction, bringing wrath on the entire community of Israel? He was not the only one who perished because of his iniquity.' ”
“One of you routed a thousand because the LORD your God was fighting for you, as he promised.[fn]
“I am now going the way of the whole earth, and you know with all your heart and all your soul that none of the good promises the LORD your God made to you has failed. Everything was fulfilled for you; not one promise has failed.
Samson told her, “If they tie me up with seven fresh bowstrings that have not been dried, I will become weak and be like any other man.”
He told her, “If they tie me up with new ropes that have never been used, I will become weak and be like any other man.”
Then Delilah said to Samson, “You have mocked me all along and told me lies! Tell me how you can be tied up.”
He told her, “If you weave the seven braids on my head into the fabric on a loom — ”[fn]
All the Israelites from Dan to Beer-sheba and from the land of Gilead came out, and the community assembled as one body before the LORD at Mizpah.
Then all the people stood united and said, “None of us will go to his tent or return to his house.
He took a team of oxen, cut them in pieces, and sent them throughout the territory of Israel by messengers who said, “This is what will be done to the ox of anyone who doesn't march behind Saul and Samuel.” As a result, the terror of the LORD fell on the people, and they went out united.
Then one of the troops said, “Your father made the troops solemnly swear, ‘The man who eats food today is cursed,' and the troops are exhausted.”
One of the young men answered, “I have seen a son of Jesse of Bethlehem who knows how to play the lyre. He is also a valiant man, a warrior, eloquent, handsome, and the LORD is with him.”
However, one of the sons of Ahimelech son of Ahitub escaped. His name was Abiathar, and he fled to David.
David called to Abner, “You're a man, aren't you? Who in Israel is your equal? So why didn't you protect your lord the king when one of the people came to destroy him?
David answered, “Here is the king's spear; have one of the young men come over and get it.
Baana son of Ahilud, in Taanach, Megiddo, and all Beth-shean which is beside Zarethan below Jezreel, from Beth-shean to Abel-meholah, as far as the other side of Jokmeam;
Ben-geber, in Ramoth-gilead (he had the villages of Jair son of Manasseh, which are in Gilead, and he had the region of Argob, which is in Bashan, sixty great cities with walls and bronze bars);
Geber son of Uri, in the land of Gilead, the country of King Sihon of the Amorites and of King Og of Bashan.
There was one deputy in the land of Judah.[fn]
Then he made ten bronze basins — each basin held 220 gallons[fn] and each was six feet wide — one basin for each of the ten water carts.
“Blessed be the LORD! He has given rest to his people Israel according to all he has said. Not one of all the good promises he made through his servant Moses has failed.
Now a certain old prophet was living in Bethel. His son[fn] came and told him all the deeds that the man of God had done that day in Bethel. His sons also told their father the words that he had spoken to the king.
A prophet approached King Ahab of Israel and said, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Do you see this whole huge army? Watch, I am handing it over to you today so that you may know that I am the LORD.' ”
One of the sons of the prophets said to his fellow prophet by the word of the LORD, “Strike me! ” But the man refused to strike him.
Some time passed after these events. Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard; it was in Jezreel next to the palace of King Ahab of Samaria.
The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “There is still one man who can inquire of the LORD, but I hate him because he never prophesies good about me, but only disaster. He is Micaiah son of Imlah.”
“The king shouldn't say that! ” Jehoshaphat replied.
But a man drew his bow without taking special aim and struck the king of Israel through the joints of his armor. So he said to his charioteer, “Turn around and take me out of the battle,[fn] for I am badly wounded! ”
But Jehoshaphat said, “Isn't there a prophet of the LORD here? Let's inquire of the LORD through him.”
One of the servants of the king of Israel answered, “Elisha son of Shaphat, who used to pour water on Elijah's hands, is here.”
One went out to the field to gather herbs and found a wild vine from which he gathered as many wild gourds as his garment would hold. Then he came back and cut them up into the pot of stew, but they were unaware of what they were.[fn]
“Please let us go to the Jordan where we can each get a log and can build ourselves a place to live there.”
“Go,” he said.
As one of them was cutting down a tree, the iron ax head fell into the water, and he cried out, “Oh, my master, it was borrowed! ”
One of his servants said, “No one, my lord the king. Elisha, the prophet in Israel, tells the king of Israel even the words you speak in your bedroom.”
But one of his servants responded, “Please, let messengers take five of the horses that are left in the city. Their fate is like the entire Israelite community who will die,[fn] so let's send them and see.”
These Gadites were army commanders; the least of them was a match for a hundred, and the greatest of them for a thousand.
The secretary, Shemaiah son of Nethanel, a Levite, recorded them in the presence of the king and the officers, the priest Zadok, Ahimelech son of Abiathar, and the heads of families of the priests and the Levites. One ancestral family[fn] was taken for Eleazar, and then one for Ithamar.
Then King David said to all the assembly, “My son Solomon — God has chosen him alone — is young and inexperienced. The task is great because the building will not be built for a human but for the LORD God.
If there is an angel on his side,
one mediator out of a thousand,
to tell a person what is right for him[fn]
One basket contained very good figs, like early figs, but the other basket contained very bad figs, so bad they were inedible.
Her cities have become a desolation,
an arid desert,
a land where no one lives,
where no human being even passes through.
When I looked at the living creatures, there was one wheel on the ground beside each of the four-faced creatures.
And I saw six men coming from the direction of the Upper Gate, which faces north, each with a war club in his hand. There was another man among them, clothed in linen, carrying writing equipment. They came and stood beside the bronze altar.
I looked, and there were four wheels beside the cherubim, one wheel beside each cherub. The luster of the wheels was like the gleam of beryl.
“She brought up one of her cubs,
and he became a young lion.
After he learned to tear prey,
he devoured people.
“Son of man, those who live in the[fn] ruins in the land of Israel are saying, ‘Abraham was only one person, yet he received possession of the land. But we are many; surely the land has been given to us as a possession.'
“I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel, and one king will rule over all of them. They will no longer be two nations and will no longer be divided into two kingdoms.
“My servant David will be king over them, and there will be one shepherd for all of them. They will follow my ordinances, and keep my statutes and obey them.
Its stairway had seven steps, and its portico was ahead of them. It had palm trees on its jambs, one on each side.
and over them three administrators, including Daniel. These satraps would be accountable to them so that the king would not be defrauded.
I looked up,[fn] and there was a ram standing beside the canal. He had two horns. The two horns were long, but one was longer than the other, and the longer one came up last.
Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one said to the speaker, “How long will the events of this vision last — the regular sacrifice, the rebellion that makes desolate, and the giving over of the sanctuary and of the army to be trampled? ”
I looked up, and there was a man dressed in linen, with a belt of gold from Uphaz[fn] around his waist.
“But the prince of the kingdom of Persia opposed me for twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me after I had been left there with the kings of Persia.
“However, I will tell you what is recorded in the book of truth. (No one has the courage to support me against those princes except Michael, your prince.
“The king of the South will grow powerful, but one of his commanders will grow more powerful and will rule a kingdom greater than his.
Then I, Daniel, looked, and two others were standing there, one on this bank of the river and one on the other.
The Lord GOD showed me this: He was forming a swarm of locusts at the time the spring crop first began to sprout — after the cutting of the king's hay.
On the day you stood aloof,
on the day strangers captured his wealth,[fn]
while foreigners entered his city gate
and cast lots for Jerusalem,
you were just like one of them.
I will bring them back from the land of Egypt
and gather them from Assyria.
I will bring them to the land of Gilead
and to Lebanon,
but it will not be enough for them.
On that day the LORD will become King over the whole earth — the LORD alone, and his name alone.
When David returned home to bless his household, Saul's daughter Michal came out to meet him. “How the king of Israel honored himself today! ” she said. “He exposed himself today in the sight of the slave girls of his subjects like a vulgar person would expose himself.”
Ziba said to the king, “Your servant will do all my lord the king commands.”
So Mephibosheth ate at David's[fn] table just like one of the king's sons.
So the LORD sent Nathan to David. When he arrived, he said to him:
There were two men in a certain city, one rich and the other poor.
“Where could I ever go with my humiliation? And you — you would be like one of the outrageous fools in Israel! Please, speak to the king, for he won't keep me from you.”
While they were on the way, a report reached David: “Absalom struck down all the king's sons; not even one of them survived! ”
“Your servant had two sons. They were fighting in the field with no one to separate them, and one struck the other and killed him.
One of the men saw him and informed Joab. He said, “I just saw Absalom hanging in an oak tree! ”
The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “There is still one man who can inquire of the LORD, but I hate him because he never prophesies good about me, but only disaster. He is Micaiah son of Imlah.”
“The king shouldn't say that,” Jehoshaphat replied.
When the seventh month arrived, and the Israelites were in their towns, the people gathered as one in Jerusalem.
All of the priests and Levites were ceremonially clean, because they had purified themselves. They killed the Passover lamb for themselves, their priestly brothers, and all the exiles.
Hanani, one of my brothers, arrived with men from Judah, and I questioned them about Jerusalem and the Jewish remnant that had survived the exile.
Each[fn] day, one ox, six choice sheep, and some fowl were prepared for me. An abundance of all kinds of wine was provided every ten days. But I didn't demand the food allotted to the governor, because the burden on the people was so heavy.
all the people gathered together at the square in front of the Water Gate. They asked the scribe Ezra to bring the book of the law of Moses that the LORD had given Israel.
There is a person without a companion,[fn] without even a son or brother, and though there is no end to all his struggles, his eyes are still not content with riches. “Who am I struggling for,” he asks, “and depriving myself of good things? ” This too is futile and a miserable task.
For if either falls, his companion can lift him up; but pity the one who falls without another to lift him up.
Also, if two lie down together, they can keep warm; but how can one person alone keep warm?
And if someone overpowers one person, two can resist him. A cord of three strands is not easily broken.
