“She quickly lowered her jug from her shoulder and said, ‘Drink, and I'll water your camels also.' So I drank, and she also watered the camels.

And Abimelech said to Isaac, “Leave us, for you are much too powerful for us.”[fn]

Isaac said to them, “Why have you come to me? You hated me and sent me away from you.”

So she took off her widow's clothes, veiled her face, covered herself, and sat at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the way to Timnah. For she saw that, though Shelah had grown up, she had not been given to him as a wife.

She got up and left, then removed her veil and put her widow's clothes back on.

But Moses replied to the LORD, “Please, Lord, I have never been eloquent ​— ​either in the past or recently or since you have been speaking to your servant ​— ​because my mouth and my tongue are sluggish.”[fn]

“Ever since I went in to Pharaoh to speak in your name he has caused trouble for this people, and you haven't rescued your people at all.”

“Tomorrow at this time I will rain down the worst hail that has ever occurred in Egypt from the day it was founded until now.

The hail, with lightning flashing through it, was so severe that nothing like it had occurred in the land of Egypt since it had become a nation.

“They will fill your houses, all your officials' houses, and the houses of all the Egyptians ​— ​something your fathers and grandfathers never saw since the time they occupied the land until today.” Then he turned and left Pharaoh's presence.

“You are to eat unleavened bread in the first month, from the evening of the fourteenth day of the month until the evening of the twenty-first day.

“Keep this statute at its appointed time from year to year.

“Serve the LORD your God, and he[fn] will bless your bread and your water. I will remove illnesses from you.

“In the tent of meeting outside the curtain that is in front of the testimony, Aaron and his sons are to tend the lamp from evening until morning before the LORD. This is to be a permanent statute for the Israelites throughout their generations.

“You must not follow the statutes of the nations I am driving out before you, for they did all these things, and I abhorred them.

“Those[fn] who survive in the lands of your enemies will waste away because of their iniquity; they will also waste away because of their ancestors' iniquities along with theirs.

“If the vow involves any of the unclean animals that may not be brought as an offering to the LORD, the animal must be presented before the priest.

Sometimes the cloud remained only from evening until morning; when the cloud lifted in the morning, they set out. Or if it remained a day and a night, they moved out when the cloud lifted.

The people then came to Moses and said, “We have sinned by speaking against the LORD and against you. Intercede with the LORD so that he will take the snakes away from us.” And Moses interceded for the people.

“Do not show partiality when deciding a case; listen to small and great alike. Do not be intimidated by anyone, for judgment belongs to God. Bring me any case too difficult for you, and I will hear it.

“Remember and do not forget how you provoked the LORD your God in the wilderness. You have been rebelling against the LORD from the day you left the land of Egypt until you reached this place.

“I will make my arrows drunk with blood

while my sword devours flesh —

the blood of the slain and the captives,

the heads of the enemy leaders.”[fn]

“Your territory will be from the wilderness and Lebanon to the great river, the Euphrates River ​— ​all the land of the Hittites ​— ​and west to the Mediterranean Sea.

They told Joshua, “The LORD has handed over the entire land to us. Everyone who lives in the land is also panicking because of us.”[fn]

“Now choose twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one man for each tribe.

“Choose twelve men from the people, one man for each tribe,

So Joshua summoned the twelve men he had selected from the Israelites, one man for each tribe,

The LORD then said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the disgrace of Egypt from you.” Therefore, that place is still called Gilgal[fn] today.

The Israelites struck down the following kings of the land and took possession of their land beyond the Jordan to the east and from the Arnon River to Mount Hermon, including all the Arabah eastward:

“As you see, the LORD has kept me alive these forty-five years as he promised, since the LORD spoke this word to Moses while Israel was journeying in the wilderness. Here I am today, eighty-five years old.

Jephthah replied to the elders of Gilead, “Didn't you hate me and drive me out of my father's family? Why then have you come to me now when you're in trouble? ”

They also said, “Look, there's an annual festival to the LORD in Shiloh, which is north of Bethel, east of the highway that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and south of Lebonah.”

They replied, “If you send the ark of Israel's God away, do not send it without an offering. Send back a guilt offering to him, and you will be healed. Then the reason his hand hasn't been removed from you will be revealed.”[fn]

“Make images of your tumors and of your mice that are destroying the land. Give glory to Israel's God, and perhaps he will stop oppressing you,[fn] your gods, and your land.

The people of Beth-shemesh asked, “Who is able to stand in the presence of the LORD this holy God? To whom should the ark go from here? ”

Time went by until twenty years had passed since the ark had been taken to Kiriath-jearim. Then the whole house of Israel longed for the LORD.

The Israelites said to Samuel, “Don't stop crying out to the LORD our God for us, so that he will save us from the Philistines.”

“They are doing the same thing to you that they have done to me,[fn] since the day I brought them out of Egypt until this day, abandoning me and worshiping other gods.

Then the Philistine commanders asked, “What are these Hebrews doing here? ”

Achish answered the Philistine commanders, “That is David, servant of King Saul of Israel. He has been with me a considerable period of time.[fn] From the day he defected until today, I've found no fault with him.”

So Achish summoned David and told him, “As the LORD lives, you are an honorable man. I think it is good[fn] to have you fighting[fn] in this unit with me, because I have found no fault in you from the day you came to me until today. But the leaders don't think you are reliable.

“But what have I done? ” David replied to Achish. “From the first day I entered your service until today, what have you found against your servant to keep me from going to fight against the enemies of my lord the king? ”

Jonathan's bow never retreated,

Saul's sword never returned unstained,[fn]

from the blood of the slain,

from the flesh[fn] of the mighty.

“From the time I brought the Israelites out of Egypt until today I have not dwelt in a house; instead, I have been moving around with a tent as my dwelling.

“But my faithful love will never leave him as it did when I removed it from Saul, whom I removed from before you.

“Since the day I brought my people Israel out of Egypt,

I have not chosen a city to build a temple in

among any of the tribes of Israel,

so that my name would be there.

But I have chosen David to rule my people Israel.”

The young men who had grown up with him told him, “This is what you should say to this people who said to you, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but you, make it lighter on us! ' This is what you should tell them: ‘My little finger is thicker than my father's waist!

One day Elisha went to Shunem. A prominent woman who lived there persuaded him to eat some food. So whenever he passed by, he stopped there to eat.

The sons of the prophets said to Elisha, “Please notice that the place where we live under your supervision[fn] is too small for us.

No such Passover had ever been observed from the time of the judges who judged Israel through the entire time of the kings of Israel and Judah.

“Then let's bring back the ark of our God, for we did not inquire of him[fn] in Saul's days.”

“ever since the day I ordered judges to be over my people Israel. I will also subdue all your enemies.

“ ‘Furthermore, I declare to you that the LORD himself will build a house for you.

All of Solomon's work was carried out from the day the foundation was laid for the LORD's temple until it was finished. So the LORD's temple was completed.

“It is in my heart now to make a covenant with the LORD, the God of Israel so that his burning anger may turn away from us.

“Don't become obstinate[fn] now like your ancestors did. Give your allegiance[fn] to the LORD, and come to his sanctuary that he has consecrated forever. Serve the LORD your God so that he may turn his burning anger away from you,

I issued a decree and a search was conducted. It was discovered that this city has had uprisings against kings since ancient times, and there have been rebellions and revolts in it.

As far as the east is from the west,

so far has he removed

our transgressions from us.

locusts have no king,

yet all of them march in ranks;

“When you spread out your hands in prayer,

I will refuse to look at you;

even if you offer countless prayers,

I will not listen.

Your hands are covered with blood.

“The LORD will bring on you, your people, and your father's house such a time as has never been since Ephraim separated from Judah: He will bring the king of Assyria.”

Aram from the east and Philistia from the west

have consumed Israel with open mouths.

In all this, his anger has not turned away,

and his hand is still raised to strike.

But they will swoop down

on the Philistine flank to the west.

Together they will plunder the people of the east.

They will extend their power over Edom and Moab,

and the Ammonites will be their subjects.

Even the cypresses and the cedars of Lebanon

rejoice over you:

“Since you have been laid low,

no lumberjack has come against us.”

“Get out of the way!

Leave the pathway.

Rid us of the Holy One of Israel.”

Each will be like a shelter from the wind,

a refuge from the rain,

like flowing streams in a dry land

and the shade of a massive rock in an arid land.

until the Spirit[fn] from on high is poured out on us.

Then the desert will become an orchard,

and the orchard will seem like a forest.

Listen! Their warriors cry loudly in the streets;

the messengers of peace weep bitterly.

“I have stirred up one from the north, and he has come,

one from the east who invokes my[fn] name.

He will march over rulers as if they were mud,

like a potter who treads the clay.

“Because you are precious in my sight

and honored, and I love you,

I will give people in exchange for you

and nations instead of your life.

Who, like me, can announce the future?

Let him say so and make a case before me,

since I have established an ancient people.

Let these gods declare[fn] the coming things,

and what will take place.

But your iniquities are separating you

from your God,

and your sins have hidden his face from you

so that he does not listen.

We all growl like bears

and moan like doves.

We hope for justice, but there is none;

for salvation, but it is far from us.

No one calls on your name,

striving to take hold of you.

For you have hidden your face from us

and made us melt because of[fn][fn] our iniquity.

Because of this, put on sackcloth;

mourn and wail,

for the LORD's burning anger

has not turned away from us.

“Your guilty acts have diverted these things from you.

Your sins have withheld my bounty from you,

“Since the day your ancestors came out of the land of Egypt until today, I have sent all my servants the prophets to you time and time again.[fn]

“Inquire of the LORD on our behalf, since King Nebuchadnezzar[fn] of Babylon is making war against us. Perhaps the LORD will perform for us something like all his past wondrous works so that Nebuchadnezzar will withdraw from us.”

“As for you, you are to prophesy all these things to them, and say to them:

The LORD roars from on high;

he makes his voice heard from his holy dwelling.

He roars loudly over his grazing land;

he calls out with a shout, like those who tread grapes,

against all the inhabitants of the earth.

“for this city has caused my wrath and fury from the day it was built until now. I will therefore remove it from my presence

“Take a scroll, and write on it all the words I have spoken to you concerning Israel, Judah, and all the nations from the time I first spoke to you during Josiah's reign until today.

“This is what the LORD says: Don't deceive yourselves by saying, “The Chaldeans will leave us for good,” for they will not leave.

“The officials may hear that I have spoken with you and come and demand of you, ‘Tell us what you said to the king; don't hide anything from us and we won't kill you. Also, what did the king say to you? '

So the prophet Jeremiah said to them, “I have heard. I will now pray to the LORD your God according to your words, and I will tell you every word that the LORD answers you; I won't withhold a word from you.”

The one who does

the LORD's business deceitfully[fn] is cursed,

and the one who withholds

his sword from bloodshed is cursed.

“Say to them, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says: On the day I chose Israel, I swore an oath[fn] to the descendants of Jacob's house and made myself known to them in the land of Egypt. I swore to them, saying, “I am the LORD your God.”

“Therefore, Oholibah, this is what the Lord GOD says: I am going to incite your lovers against you, those you turned away from in disgust. I will bring them against you from every side:

“For this is what the Lord GOD says: I am going to hand you over to those you hate, to those you turned away from in disgust.

“Son of man, write down today's date, this very day. The king of Babylon has laid siege to Jerusalem this very day.

“Now the coastlands tremble

on the day of your downfall;

the islands in the sea

are alarmed by your demise.' ”

“You were in Eden, the garden of God.

Every kind of precious stone covered you:

carnelian, topaz, and diamond,[fn]

beryl, onyx, and jasper,

lapis lazuli, turquoise[fn] and emerald.[fn]

Your mountings and settings were crafted in gold;

they were prepared on the day you were created.

“From the day you were created

you were blameless in your ways

until wickedness was found in you.

“Therefore the cedar became greater in height

than all the trees of the field.

Its branches multiplied,

and its boughs grew long

as it spread them out

because of the abundant water.

“I will cause many peoples to be appalled at you,

and their kings will shudder with fear because of you

when I brandish my sword in front of them.

On the day of your downfall

each of them will tremble

every moment for his life.

“I will slaughter all its cattle

that are beside many waters.

No human foot will churn them again,

and no cattle hooves will disturb them.

“After a long time you will be summoned. In the last years you will enter a land that has been restored from war[fn] and regathered from many peoples to the mountains of Israel, which had long been a ruin. They were brought out from the peoples, and all of them now live securely.

“The perimeter of the city will be six miles,[fn] and the name of the city from that day on will be The LORD Is There.”

“As for the command to leave the tree's stump with its roots, your kingdom will be restored[fn] to you as soon as you acknowledge that Heaven[fn] rules.

At that time

Michael, the great prince

who stands watch over your people, will rise up.

There will be a time of distress

such as never has occurred

since nations came into being until that time.

But at that time all your people

who are found written in the book will escape.

Israel, you have sinned

since the days of Gibeah;

they have taken their stand there.

Will not war against the unjust

overtake them in Gibeah?

Therefore, they will be like the morning mist,

like the early dew that vanishes,

like chaff blown from a threshing floor,

or like smoke from a window.

I will drive the northerner far from you

and banish him to a dry and desolate land,

his front ranks into the Dead Sea,

and his rear guard into the Mediterranean Sea.

His stench will rise;

yes, his rotten smell will rise,

for he has done astonishing things.

On the day you stood aloof,

on the day strangers captured his wealth,[fn]

while foreigners entered his city gate

and cast lots for Jerusalem,

you were just like one of them.

So they said to him, “What should we do to you so that the sea will calm down for us? ” For the sea was getting worse and worse.

When word reached the king of Nineveh, he got up from his throne, took off his royal robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.

The LORD of Armies says this: “Let your hands be strong, you who now hear these words that the prophets spoke when the foundations were laid for the rebuilding of the temple, the house of the LORD of Armies.
