and Jacob fathered Joseph the husband of Mary,
who gave birth to Jesus who is called the Messiah.
He replied to them, “Who among you, if he had a sheep that fell into a pit on the Sabbath, wouldn't take hold of it and lift it out?
“But you say, ‘Whoever tells his father or mother, “Whatever benefit you might have received from me is a gift committed to the temple,”
“What do you think? If someone has a hundred sheep, and one of them goes astray, won't he leave the ninety-nine on the hillside and go and search for the stray?
“What do you want? ” he asked her.
“Promise,”[fn] she said to him, “that these two sons of mine may sit, one on your right and the other on your left, in your kingdom.”
He told them, “You will indeed drink my cup,[fn] but to sit at my right and left is not mine to give; instead, it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.”
“Did John's baptism come from heaven, or was it of human origin? ”
They discussed it among themselves, “If we say, ‘From heaven,' he will say to us, ‘Then why didn't you believe him? '
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed[fn] and self-indulgence.
“This is why I am sending you prophets, sages, and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town.
“Then he will also say to those on the left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels!
Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks, he gave it to them and said, “Drink from it, all of you.
After a little while those standing there approached and said to Peter, “You really are one of them, since even your accent[fn] gives you away.”
They conferred together and bought the potter's field with it as a burial place for foreigners.
They twisted together a crown of thorns, put it on his head, and placed a staff in his right hand. And they knelt down before him and mocked him: “Hail, king of the Jews! ”
Then two criminals[fn] were crucified with him, one on the right and one on the left.
Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge, filled it with sour wine, put it on a stick, and offered him a drink.
There was a violent earthquake, because an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and approached the tomb. He rolled back the stone and was sitting on it.
And the unclean spirit threw him into convulsions, shouted with a loud voice, and came out of him.
Immediately Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched my clothes? ”
“But you say, ‘If anyone tells his father or mother: Whatever benefit you might have received from me is corban' ” (that is, an offering devoted to God),
When Jesus saw that a crowd was quickly gathering, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you: Come out of him and never enter him again.”
“But to sit at my right or left is not mine to give; instead, it is for those for whom it has been prepared.”
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.[fn]
“And to love him with all your heart, with all your understanding,[fn] and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself, is far more important than all the burnt offerings and sacrifices.”
While they were reclining and eating, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me — one who is eating with me.”
Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.
When the maidservant saw him again, she began to tell those standing nearby, “This man is one of them.”
But again he denied it. After a little while those standing there said to Peter again, “You certainly are one of them, since you're also a Galilean.”[fn]
After this, he appeared in a different form to two of them walking on their way into the country.
In the days of King Herod of Judea, there was a priest of Abijah's division named Zechariah. His wife was from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.
to a virgin engaged[fn] to a man named Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin's name was Mary.
Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family line of David,
and the Holy Spirit descended on him in a physical appearance like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well-pleased.”
But Jesus rebuked him and said, “Be silent and come out of him! ” And throwing him down before them, the demon came out of him without hurting him at all.
“For each tree is known by its own fruit. Figs aren't gathered from thornbushes, or grapes picked from a bramble bush.
“Remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they offer, for the worker is worthy of his wages. Don't move from house to house.
He answered, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,” and “your neighbor as yourself.”
He also said to them, “Suppose one of you[fn] has a friend and goes to him at midnight and says to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread,
“because a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I don't have anything to offer him.'
“If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him? ”
But some of them said, “He drives out demons by Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons.”
“Because of this, the wisdom of God said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and persecute,'
“Aren't five sparrows sold for two pennies?[fn] Yet not one of them is forgotten in God's sight.
“For which of you, wanting to build a tower, doesn't first sit down and calculate the cost to see if he has enough to complete it?
“In the same way, therefore, every one of you who does not renounce[fn] all his possessions cannot be my disciple.
“What man among you, who has a hundred sheep and loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open field[fn] and go after the lost one until he finds it?
“Which one of you having a servant tending sheep or plowing will say to him when he comes in from the field, ‘Come at once and sit down to eat'?
But one of them, seeing that he was healed, returned and, with a loud voice, gave glory to God.
“You will even be betrayed by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends. They will kill some of you.
“For I tell you, I will not eat it again[fn] until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”
So they began to argue among themselves which of them it could be who was going to do it.
After a little while, someone else saw him and said, “You're one of them too.”
“Man, I am not! ” Peter said.
Herod was very glad to see Jesus; for a long time he had wanted to see him because he had heard about him and was hoping to see some miracle[fn] performed by him.
When they arrived at the place called The Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals, one on the right and one on the left.
Now that same day two of them were on their way to a village called Emmaus, which was about seven miles[fn] from Jerusalem.
This was John's testimony when the Jews from Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him, “Who are you? ”
And John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and he rested on him.
Jesus answered, “Truly I tell you, unless someone is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
“You aren't greater than our father Jacob, are you? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and livestock.”
“This is the will of him who sent me: that I should lose none of those he has given me but should raise them up on the last day.
“This is the bread that comes down from heaven so that anyone may eat of it and not die.
“But there are some among you who don't believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning those who did not[fn] believe and the one who would betray him.)
“Didn't Moses give you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me? ”
Nicodemus — the one who came to him previously and who was one of them — said to them,
“Who among you can convict me of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don't you believe me?
Many of them were saying, “He has a demon and he's crazy. Why do you listen to him? ”
But some of them said, “Couldn't he who opened the blind man's eyes also have kept this man from dying? ”
One of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all!
“For I have not spoken on my own, but the Father himself who sent me has given me a command to say everything I have said.
When Jesus had said this, he was troubled in his spirit and testified, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.”
“But I have told you these things so that when their time[fn] comes you will remember I told them to you. I didn't tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you.
“But now I am going away to him who sent me, and not one of you asks me, ‘Where are you going? '
“While I was with them, I was protecting them by your name that you have given me. I guarded them and not one of them is lost, except the son of destruction,[fn] so that the Scripture may be fulfilled.
This was to fulfill the words he had said: “I have not lost one of those you have given me.”
The soldiers also twisted together a crown of thorns, put it on his head, and clothed him in a purple robe.
“to take the place[fn] in this apostolic ministry that Judas left to go where he belongs.”
“So in the present case, I tell you, stay away from these men and leave them alone. For if this plan or this work is of human origin, it will fail;
“Brothers and sisters, select from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and wisdom, whom we can appoint to this duty.
There he found a man named Aeneas, who was paralyzed and had been bedridden for eight years.
But there were some of them, men from Cyprus and Cyrene, who came to Antioch and began speaking to the Greeks[fn] also, proclaiming the good news about the Lord Jesus.
One of them, named Agabus, stood up and predicted by the Spirit that there would be a severe famine throughout the Roman world.[fn] This took place during the reign of Claudius.
After they had completed their relief mission, Barnabas and Saul returned to[fn] Jerusalem, taking along John who was called Mark.
“The God of this people Israel chose our ancestors, made the people prosper during their stay in the land of Egypt, and led them out of it with a mighty[fn] arm.
After Paul and Barnabas had engaged them in serious argument and debate, Paul and Barnabas and some others were appointed to go up to the apostles and elders in Jerusalem about this issue.
“Simeon[fn] has reported how God first intervened to take from the Gentiles a people for his name.
Then the apostles and the elders, with the whole church, decided to select men who were among them and to send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas: Judas, called Barsabbas, and Silas, both leading men among the brothers.
They wrote:
“From the apostles and the elders, your brothers,
To the brothers and sisters among the Gentiles in Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia:
Greetings.
“Since we have heard that some without our authorization went out from us and troubled you with their words and unsettled your hearts,[fn]
“that you abstain from food offered to idols, from blood, from eating anything that has been strangled, and from sexual immorality. You will do well if you keep yourselves from these things.
Farewell.”
Some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, including a large number of God-fearing Greeks, as well as a number of the leading women.
Consequently, many of them believed, including a number of the prominent Greek women as well as men.
“From one man[fn] he has made every nationality to live over the whole earth and has determined their appointed times and the boundaries of where they live.
“Men will rise up even from your own number and distort the truth to lure the disciples into following them.
“and saw him telling me, ‘Hurry and get out of Jerusalem quickly, because they will not accept your testimony about me.'
“Don't let them persuade you, because there are more than forty of them lying in ambush — men who have bound themselves under a curse not to eat or drink until they have killed him. Now they are ready, waiting for your consent.”
“that the Messiah would suffer, and that, as the first to rise from the dead, he would proclaim light to our people and to the Gentiles.”
“Now I urge you to take courage, because there will be no loss of any of your lives, but only of the ship.
After three days he called together the leaders of the Jews. When they had gathered he said to them, “Brothers, although I have done nothing against our people or the customs of our ancestors, I was delivered as a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.
and was appointed to be the powerful Son of God according to the Spirit of holiness[fn] by the resurrection of the dead.
but wrath and anger to those who are self-seeking and disobey the truth while obeying unrighteousness.
On the contrary, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly, and circumcision is of the heart — by the Spirit, not the letter.[fn] That person's praise is not from people but from God.
For no one will be justified[fn] in his sight by the works of the law, because the knowledge of sin comes through the law.
If Abraham was justified[fn] by works, he has something to boast about — but not before God.
And the gift is not like the one man's sin, because from one sin came the judgment, resulting in condemnation, but from many trespasses came the gift, resulting in justification.[fn]
Now it is not as though the word of God has failed, because not all who are descended from Israel are Israel.
For though her sons had not been born yet or done anything good or bad, so that God's purpose according to election might stand —
Why is that? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were by works.[fn] They stumbled over the stumbling stone.
So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the message about Christ.[fn]
For from him and through him
and to him are all things.
To him be the glory forever. Amen.
For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Do you want to be unafraid of the one in authority? Do what is good, and you will have its approval.
Besides this, since you know the time, it is already the hour for you[fn] to wake up from sleep, because now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed.
It is from him that you are in Christ Jesus, who became wisdom from God for us — our righteousness, sanctification, and redemption —
yet for us there is one God, the Father. All things are from him, and we exist for him. And there is one Lord, Jesus Christ. All things are through him, and we exist through him.
Then he appeared to over five hundred brothers and sisters at one time; most of them are still alive, but some have fallen asleep.
For if I cause you pain, then who will cheer me other than the one being hurt by me?[fn]
For we do not market the word of God for profit like so many.[fn] On the contrary, we speak with sincerity in Christ, as from God and before God.
Are we beginning to commend ourselves again? Or do we need, like some, letters of recommendation to you or from you?
It is not that we are competent in[fn] ourselves to claim anything as coming from ourselves, but our adequacy is from God.
Now we have this treasure in clay jars, so that this extraordinary power may be from God and not from us.
I now rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because your grief led to repentance. For you were grieved as God willed, so that you didn't experience any loss from us.
Now as you excel in everything — in faith, speech, knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love for us[fn] — excel also in this act of grace.
At the present time your surplus is available for their need, so that their abundance may in turn meet your need, in order that there may be equality.
For I know your eagerness, and I boast about you to the Macedonians, “Achaia has been ready since last year,” and your zeal has stirred up most of them.
Each person should do as he has decided in his heart — not reluctantly or out of compulsion, since God loves a cheerful giver.
On frequent journeys, I faced dangers from rivers, dangers from robbers, dangers from my own people, dangers from Gentiles, dangers in the city, dangers in the wilderness, dangers at sea, and dangers among false brothers;
For if I want to boast, I wouldn't be a fool, because I would be telling the truth. But I will spare you, so that no one can credit me with something beyond what he sees in me or hears from me,
For he was crucified in weakness, but he lives by the power of God. For we also are weak in him, but in dealing with you we will live with him by God's power.
But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, a curse be on him![fn]
and yet because we know that a person is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ,[fn] even we ourselves have believed in Christ Jesus. This was so that we might be justified by faith in Christ[fn] and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no human being will[fn] be justified.
I only want to learn this from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law or by believing what you heard?[fn]
So then, does God give you the Spirit and work miracles among you by your doing the works of the law? Or is it by believing what you heard —
For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, because it is written, Everyone who does not do everything written in the book of the law is cursed.
For if the inheritance is based on the law, it is no longer based on the promise; but God has graciously given it to Abraham through the promise.
For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God's gift —
From him the whole body, fitted and knit together by every supporting ligament, promotes the growth of the body for building itself up in love by the proper working of each individual part.
the others proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, thinking that they will cause me trouble in my imprisonment.
circumcised the eighth day; of the nation of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew born of Hebrews; regarding the law, a Pharisee;
Our citizenship is in heaven, and we eagerly wait for a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.
They don't hold on to the head, from whom the whole body, nourished and held together by its ligaments and tendons, grows with growth from God.
He is coming with Onesimus, a faithful and dearly loved brother, who is one of you. They will tell you about everything here.
Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ Jesus, sends you greetings. He is always wrestling for you in his prayers, so that you can stand mature and fully assured[fn] in everything God wills.
he is conceited and understands nothing, but has an unhealthy interest in disputes and arguments over words. From these come envy, quarreling, slander, evil suspicions,
One of their very own prophets said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.”
Your message is to be sound beyond reproach, so that any opponent will be ashamed, because he doesn't have anything bad to say about us.
he saved us — not by works of righteousness that we had done, but according to his mercy — through the washing of regeneration and renewal by the Holy Spirit.
For the one who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one Father.[fn] That is why Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters,
But encourage each other daily, while it is still called today, so that none of you is hardened by sin's deception.
For every high priest taken from among men is appointed in matters pertaining to God for the people, to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins.
But one without this[fn] lineage collected a tenth from Abraham and blessed the one who had the promises.
Now it is evident that our Lord came from Judah, and Moses said nothing about that tribe concerning priests.
Women received their dead, raised to life again. Other people were tortured, not accepting release, so that they might gain a better resurrection.
We have an altar from which those who worship at the tabernacle do not have a right to eat.
and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, stay warm, and be well fed,” but you don't give them what the body needs, what good is it?
In the same way, wasn't Rahab the prostitute also justified by works in receiving the messengers and sending them out by a different route?
If anyone speaks, let it be as one who speaks God's words; if anyone serves, let it be from the strength God provides, so that God may be glorified through Jesus Christ in everything. To him be the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.
We ourselves heard this voice when it came from heaven while we were with him on the holy mountain.
(for as that righteous man lived among them day by day, his righteous soul was tormented by the lawless deeds he saw and heard) —
They deliberately overlook this: By the word of God the heavens came into being long ago and the earth was brought about from water and through water.
They went out from us, but they did not belong to us; for if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us. However, they went out so that it might be made clear that none of them belongs to us.
If you know that he is righteous, you know this as well: Everyone who does what is right has been born of him.
Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father[fn] also loves the one born of him.
“Don't be afraid of what you are about to suffer. Look, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison to test you, and you will experience affliction for ten days. Be faithful to the point of death, and I will give you the crown[fn] of life.
Then I heard another voice from heaven:
Come out of her, my people,
so that you will not share in her sins
or receive any of her plagues.
Rejoice over her, heaven,
and you saints, apostles, and prophets,
because God has pronounced on her the judgment she passed on you!
