“I will pass through the land of Egypt on that night and strike every firstborn male in the land of Egypt, both people and animals. I am the LORD; I will execute judgments against all the gods of Egypt.
LORD, who is like you among the gods?
Who is like you, glorious in holiness,
revered with praises, performing wonders?
“Whoever sacrifices to any gods, except the LORD alone, is to be set apart for destruction.
“Do not bow in worship to their gods, and do not serve them. Do not imitate their practices. Instead, demolish them[fn] and smash their sacred pillars to pieces.
“They must not remain in your land, or else they will make you sin against me. If you serve their gods, it will be a snare for you.”
“Do not make a treaty with the inhabitants of the land, or else when they prostitute themselves with their gods and sacrifice to their gods, they will invite you, and you will eat their sacrifices.
Meanwhile, the Egyptians were burying every firstborn male the LORD had struck down among them, for the LORD had executed judgment against their gods.
“There you will worship man-made gods of wood and stone, which cannot see, hear, eat, or smell.
“because they will turn your sons away from me to worship other gods. Then the LORD's anger will burn against you, and he will swiftly destroy you.
“You must destroy all the peoples the LORD your God is delivering over to you and not look on them with pity. Do not worship their gods, for that will be a snare to you.
“Be careful that you are not enticed to turn aside, serve, and bow in worship to other gods.
“and a curse, if you do not obey the commands of the LORD your God and you turn aside from the path I command you today by following other gods you have not known.
“Destroy completely all the places where the nations that you are driving out worship their gods — on the high mountains, on the hills, and under every green tree.
“be careful not to be ensnared by their ways after they have been destroyed before you. Do not inquire about their gods, asking, ‘How did these nations worship their gods? I'll also do the same.'
“You must not do the same to the LORD your God, because they practice every detestable act, which the LORD hates, for their gods. They even burn their sons and daughters in the fire to their gods.
“and that sign or wonder he has promised you comes about, but he says, ‘Let's follow other gods,' which you have not known, ‘and let's worship them,'
“If your brother, the son of your mother,[fn] or your son or daughter, or the wife you embrace, or your closest friend secretly entices you, saying, ‘Let's go and worship other gods' — which neither you nor your ancestors have known,
“that wicked men have sprung up among you, led the inhabitants of their city astray, and said, ‘Let's go and worship other gods,' which you have not known,
“and has gone to serve other gods by bowing in worship to the sun, moon, or all the stars in the sky — which I have forbidden —
“so that they won't teach you to do all the detestable acts they do for their gods, and you sin against the LORD your God.
“The LORD will bring you and your king that you have appointed to a nation neither you nor your ancestors have known, and there you will worship other gods, of wood and stone.
“Then the LORD will scatter you among all peoples from one end of the earth to the other, and there you will worship other gods, of wood and stone, which neither you nor your ancestors have known.
“Be sure there is no man, woman, clan, or tribe among you today whose heart turns away from the LORD our God to go and worship the gods of those nations. Be sure there is no root among you bearing poisonous and bitter fruit.
“They began to serve other gods, bowing in worship to gods they had not known — gods that the LORD had not permitted them to worship.
“But if your heart turns away and you do not listen and you are led astray to bow in worship to other gods and serve them,
They sacrificed to demons, not God,
to gods they had not known,
new gods that had just arrived,
which your ancestors did not fear.
“If you break the covenant of the LORD your God, which he commanded you, and go and serve other gods, and bow in worship to them, the LORD's anger will burn against you, and you will quickly disappear from this good land he has given you.”
Joshua said to all the people, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Long ago your ancestors, including Terah, the father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the Euphrates River and worshiped other gods.
“But if it doesn't please you to worship the LORD, choose for yourselves today: Which will you worship — the gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living? As for me and my family, we will worship the LORD.”
“If you abandon the LORD and worship foreign gods, he will turn against you, harm you, and completely destroy you, after he has been good to you.”
“You are not to make a covenant with the inhabitants of this land. You are to tear down their altars. But you have not obeyed me. What have you done?
The Israelites took their daughters as wives for themselves, gave their own daughters to their sons, and worshiped their gods.
Then the Israelites again did what was evil in the sight of the LORD. They worshiped the Baals and the Ashtoreths, the gods of Aram, Sidon, and Moab, and the gods of the Ammonites and the Philistines. They abandoned the LORD and did not worship him.
“But you have abandoned me and worshiped other gods. Therefore, I will not deliver you again.
“They are doing the same thing to you that they have done to me,[fn] since the day I brought them out of Egypt until this day, abandoning me and worshiping other gods.
He said to David, “Am I a dog that you come against me with sticks? ”[fn] Then he cursed David by his gods.
“Now, may my lord the king please hear the words of his servant: If it is the LORD who has incited you against me, then may he accept an offering. But if it is people, may they be cursed in the presence of the LORD, for today they have banished me from sharing in the inheritance of the LORD, saying, ‘Go and worship other gods.'
If you or your sons turn away from following me and do not keep my commands — my statutes that I have set before you — and if you go and serve other gods and bow in worship to them,
Naaman responded, “If not, please let your servant be given as much soil as a pair of mules can carry, for your servant will no longer offer a burnt offering or a sacrifice to any other god but the LORD.
the Avvites made Nibhaz and Tartak, and the Sepharvites burned their children in the fire to Adrammelech and Anammelech, the gods of Sepharvaim.
They feared the LORD, but they also worshiped their own gods according to the practice of the nations from which they had been deported.
Who among all the gods of the lands has rescued his land from my power? So will the LORD rescue Jerusalem from my power? ' ”
“because they have abandoned me and burned incense to other gods in order to anger me with all the work of their hands. My wrath will be kindled against this place, and it will not be quenched.'
However, if you turn away and abandon my statutes and my commands that I have set before you and if you go and serve other gods and bow in worship to them,
He made high places in every city of Judah to offer incense to other gods, and he angered the LORD, the God of his ancestors.
“Who among all the gods of these nations that my predecessors completely destroyed was able to rescue his people from my power, that your God should be able to deliver you from my power?
“because they have abandoned me and burned incense to other gods so as to anger me with all the works of their hands. My wrath will be poured out on this place, and it will not be quenched.'
“I will pronounce my judgments against them for all the evil they did when they abandoned me to burn incense to other gods and to worship the works of their own hands.
Why should I forgive you?
Your children have abandoned me
and sworn by those who are not gods.
I satisfied their needs, yet they committed adultery;
they gashed themselves at the[fn] prostitute's house.
“When people ask, ‘For what offense has the LORD our God done all these things to us? ' You will respond to them, ‘Just as you abandoned me and served foreign gods in your land, so will you serve strangers in a land that is not yours.'
“The sons gather wood, the fathers light the fire, and the women knead dough to make cakes for the queen of heaven,[fn] and they pour out drink offerings to other gods so that they provoke me to anger.
“So I will hurl you from this land into a land that you and your ancestors have not known. There you will worship other gods both day and night, for I will not grant you grace.'[fn]
“because they have abandoned me and made this a foreign place. They have burned incense in it to other gods that they, their ancestors, and the kings of Judah have never known. They have filled this place with the blood of the innocent.
“The houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah will become impure like that place Topheth — all the houses on whose rooftops they have burned incense to all the stars in the sky and poured out drink offerings to other gods.' ”
“They will answer, ‘Because they abandoned the covenant of the LORD their God and bowed in worship to other gods and served them.' ”
“The Chaldeans who are fighting against this city will come and set this city on fire. They will burn it, including the houses where incense has been burned to Baal on their rooftops and where drink offerings have been poured out to other gods to anger me.
“because of the evil they committed to anger me, by going and burning incense to serve other gods that they, you, and your ancestors did not know.
“But they did not listen or pay attention; they did not turn from their evil or stop burning incense to other gods.
“You are angering me by the work of your hands. You are burning incense to other gods in the land of Egypt where you have gone to stay for a while. As a result, you will be cut off and become an example for cursing and insult among all the nations of earth.
However, all the men who knew that their wives were burning incense to other gods, all the women standing by — a great assembly — and all the people who were living in the land of Egypt at Pathros answered Jeremiah,
“In Moab, I will stop” — this is the LORD's declaration — “the one who offers sacrifices on the high place and burns incense to his gods.
“When I brought them into the land that I swore to give them and they saw any high hill or leafy tree, they offered their sacrifices and presented their offensive offerings there. They also sent up their pleasing aromas and poured out their drink offerings there.
“There are some Jews you have appointed to manage the province of Babylon: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. These men have ignored you, the king; they do not serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have set up.”
Nebuchadnezzar asked them, “Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, is it true that you don't serve my gods or worship the gold statue I have set up?
