Then John's disciples came to him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast? ”

As these men were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swaying in the wind?

“Truly I tell you, among those born of women no one greater than John the Baptist has appeared,[fn] but the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

Prompted by her mother, she answered, “Give me John the Baptist's head here on a platter.”

Then the disciples understood that he had spoken to them about John the Baptist.

“Did John's baptism come from heaven, or was it of human origin? ”

They discussed it among themselves, “If we say, ‘From heaven,' he will say to us, ‘Then why didn't you believe him? '

In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John.

As soon as they left the synagogue, they went into Simon and Andrew's house with James and John.

Now John's disciples and the Pharisees[fn] were fasting. People came and asked him, “Why do John's disciples and the Pharisees' disciples fast, but your disciples do not fast? ”

She went out and said to her mother, “What should I ask for? ”

“John the Baptist's head,” she said.

When the ten disciples heard this, they began to be indignant with James and John.

“Was John's baptism from heaven or of human origin? Answer me.”

Now the people were waiting expectantly, and all of them were questioning in their hearts whether John might be the Messiah.

Then they said to him, “John's disciples fast often and say prayers, and those of the Pharisees do the same, but yours eat and drink.”

After John's messengers left, he began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swaying in the wind?

“I tell you, among those born of women no one is greater than John,[fn] but the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”

“The Law and the Prophets were until John; since then, the good news of the kingdom of God has been proclaimed, and everyone is urgently invited to enter it.[fn]

“was the baptism of John from heaven or of human origin? ”

This was John's testimony when the Jews from Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him, “Who are you? ”

Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who heard John and followed him.

and he brought Simon to Jesus.

When Jesus saw him, he said, “You are Simon, son of John.[fn] You will be called Cephas” (which is translated “Peter”[fn]).

Then a dispute arose between John's disciples and a Jew[fn] about purification.

“But I have a greater testimony than John's because of the works that the Father has given me to accomplish. These very works I am doing testify about me that the Father has sent me.

When they had eaten breakfast, Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John,[fn] do you love me more than these? ”

“Yes, Lord,” he said to him, “you know that I love you.”

“Feed my lambs,” he told him.

“beginning from the baptism of John until the day he was taken up from us ​— ​from among these, it is necessary that one become a witness with us of his resurrection.”

When they observed the boldness of Peter and John and realized that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were amazed and recognized that they had been with Jesus.

and he executed James, John's brother, with the sword.

As soon as he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John who was called Mark, where many had assembled and were praying.

“Before his coming to public attention, John had previously proclaimed a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.

He had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit,[fn] he was speaking and teaching accurately about Jesus, although he knew only John's baptism.

“Into what then were you baptized? ” he asked them.

“Into John's baptism,” they replied.
