“Come, let's deal shrewdly with them; otherwise they will multiply further, and when war breaks out, they will join our enemies, fight against us, and leave the country.”
He said about Zebulun:

Joshua also set up twelve stones in the middle[fn] of the Jordan where the priests who carried the ark of the covenant were standing. The stones are still there today.

“Therefore, be strong[fn] and valiant, for though Saul your lord is dead, the house of Judah has anointed me king over them.”
“Stay here today also,” David said to Uriah, “and tomorrow I will send you back.” So Uriah stayed in Jerusalem that day and the next.
Then the men of the city came out and attacked Joab, and some of the men from David's soldiers fell in battle; Uriah the Hethite also died.
“However, the archers shot down on your servants from the top of the wall, and some of the king's servants died. Your servant Uriah the Hethite is also dead.”
“However, because you treated[fn] the LORD with such contempt in this matter, the son born to you will die.”
Just as he finished speaking, the king's sons entered and wept loudly. Then the king and all his servants also wept very bitterly.
“Your servant had two sons. They were fighting in the field with no one to separate them, and one struck the other and killed him.
“Now the whole clan has risen up against your servant and said, ‘Hand over the one who killed his brother so we may put him to death for the life of the brother he murdered. We will eliminate the heir! ' They would extinguish my one remaining ember by not preserving my husband's name or posterity on earth.”
“Besides, you only arrived yesterday; should I make you wander around with us today while I go wherever I can? Go back and take your brothers with you. May the LORD show you[fn] kindness and faithfulness.”
Zadok was also there, and all the Levites with him were carrying the ark of the covenant of God. They set the ark of God down, and Abiathar offered sacrifices[fn] until the people had finished marching past.
Now the advice Ahithophel gave in those days was like someone asking about a word from God — such was the regard that both David and Absalom had for Ahithophel's advice.
He then sent out the troops, a third under Joab, a third under Joab's brother Abishai son of Zeruiah, and a third under Ittai of Gath. The king said to the troops, “I must also march out with you.”
However, Ahimaaz son of Zadok persisted and said to Joab, “No matter what, please let me also run behind the Cushite! ”
Joab replied, “My son, why do you want to run since you won't get a reward? ”[fn]
The watchman said, “The way the first man runs looks to me like the way Ahimaaz son of Zadok runs.”
“This is a good man; he comes with good news,” the king commented.
The king went on to Gilgal, and Chimham went with him. All the troops of Judah and half of Israel's escorted the king.
The men of Israel answered the men of Judah, “We have ten shares in the king, so we have a greater claim to David than you. Why then do you despise us? Weren't we the first to speak of restoring our king? ” But the words of the men of Judah were harsher than those of the men of Israel.
But his father had never once infuriated him by asking, “Why did you do that? ” In addition, he was quite handsome and was born after Absalom.
“And the king went on to say this: ‘Blessed be the LORD God of Israel! Today he has provided one to sit on my throne, and I am a witness.' ”[fn]
“You also know what Joab son of Zeruiah did to me and what he did to the two commanders of Israel's army, Abner son of Ner and Amasa son of Jether. He murdered them in a time of peace to avenge blood shed in war. He spilled that blood on his own waistband and on the sandals of his feet.[fn]
“The LORD asked him, ‘How? '
“He said, ‘I will go and become a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.'
“Then he said, ‘You will certainly entice him and prevail. Go and do that.'
Then the sons of the prophets who were in Jericho came up to Elisha and said, “Do you know that the LORD will take your master away from you today? ”
He said, “Yes, I know. Be quiet.”
Elisha said to the woman whose son he had restored to life, “Get ready, you and your household, and go live as a resident alien wherever you can. For the LORD has announced a seven-year famine, and it has already come to the land.”
When King Ahaziah of Judah saw what was happening, he fled up the road toward Beth-haggan. Jehu pursued him, shouting, “Shoot him too! ” So they shot him in his chariot[fn] at Gur Pass near Ibleam, but he fled to Megiddo and died there.
Then Jehu brought all the people together and said to them, “Ahab served Baal a little, but Jehu will serve him a lot.
but they didn't turn away from the sins that the house of Jeroboam had caused Israel to commit. Jehoahaz continued them, and the Asherah pole also remained standing in Samaria.
but walked in the ways of the kings of Israel. He even sacrificed his son in the fire,[fn] imitating the detestable practices of the nations the LORD had dispossessed before the Israelites.
Even Judah did not keep the commands of the LORD their God but lived according to the customs Israel had practiced.
They feared the LORD but also served their idols. Still today, their children and grandchildren continue doing as their ancestors did.
“Since King Manasseh of Judah has committed all these detestable acts — worse evil than the Amorites who preceded him had done — and by means of his idols has also caused Judah to sin,
Manasseh also shed so much innocent blood that he filled Jerusalem with it from one end to another. This was in addition to his sin that he caused Judah to commit, so that they did what was evil in the LORD's sight.
“because your heart was tender and you humbled yourself before the LORD when you heard what I spoke against this place and against its inhabitants, that they would become a desolation and a curse, and because you have torn your clothes and wept before me, I myself have heard' — this is the LORD's declaration.
He even tore down the altar at Bethel and the high place that had been made by Jeroboam son of Nebat, who caused Israel to sin. He burned the high place, crushed it to dust, and burned the Asherah.
Josiah also removed all the shrines of the high places that were in the cities of Samaria, which the kings of Israel had made to anger the LORD. Josiah did the same things to them that he had done at Bethel.
In addition, Josiah eradicated the mediums, the spiritists, household idols, images, and all the abhorrent things that were seen in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem. He did this in order to carry out the words of the law that were written in the book that the priest Hilkiah found in the LORD's temple.
For the LORD had said, “I will also remove Judah from my presence just as I have removed Israel. I will reject this city Jerusalem, that I have chosen, and the temple about which I said, ‘My name will be there.' ”
and also because of all the innocent blood he had shed. He had filled Jerusalem with innocent blood, and the LORD was not willing to forgive.
When his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his own sword and died.
and when they come to their senses
in the land where they were deported
and repent and petition you in their captors' land,
saying, “We have sinned and done wrong;
we have been wicked,”
They also attacked the tents of the herdsmen and captured many sheep and camels. Then they returned to Jerusalem.
In the first year of King Cyrus of Persia, in order to fulfill the word of the LORD spoken through Jeremiah, the LORD roused the spirit of King Cyrus to issue a proclamation throughout his entire kingdom and to put it in writing:
The king sent a reply to his chief deputy Rehum, Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their colleagues living in Samaria and elsewhere in the region west of the Euphrates River:
Greetings.
There is no remembrance of those who[fn] came before;
and of those who will come after
there will also be no remembrance
by those who follow them.
I said to myself, “Go ahead, I will test you with pleasure; enjoy what is good.” But it turned out to be futile.
I acquired male and female servants and had slaves who were born in my house. I also owned livestock — large herds and flocks — more than all who were before me in Jerusalem.
So I became great and surpassed all who were before me in Jerusalem; my wisdom also remained with me.
The wise person has eyes in his head,
but the fool walks in darkness.
Yet I also knew that one fate comes to them both.
So I said to myself, “What happens to the fool will also happen to me. Why then have I been overly wise? ” And I said to myself that this is also futile.
And who knows whether he will be wise or a fool? Yet he will take over all my work that I labored at skillfully under the sun. This too is futile.
When there is a person whose work was done with wisdom, knowledge, and skill, and he must give his portion to a person who has not worked for it, this too is futile and a great wrong.
For all his days are filled with grief, and his occupation is sorrowful; even at night, his mind does not rest. This too is futile.
For to the person who is pleasing in his sight, he gives wisdom, knowledge, and joy; but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and accumulating in order to give to the one who is pleasing in God's sight. This too is futile and a pursuit of the wind.
I said to myself, “This happens so that God may test the children of Adam and they may see for themselves that they are like animals.”
I saw that all labor and all skillful work is due to one person's jealousy of another. This too is futile and a pursuit of the wind.[fn]
There is a person without a companion,[fn] without even a son or brother, and though there is no end to all his struggles, his eyes are still not content with riches. “Who am I struggling for,” he asks, “and depriving myself of good things? ” This too is futile and a miserable task.
Also, if two lie down together, they can keep warm; but how can one person alone keep warm?
There is no limit to all the people who were before them, yet those who come later will not rejoice in him. This too is futile and a pursuit of the wind.
The one who loves silver is never satisfied with silver, and whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with income. This too is futile.
This too is a sickening tragedy: exactly as he comes, so he will go. What does the one gain who struggles for the wind?
What is more, he eats in darkness all his days, with much frustration, sickness, and anger.
Furthermore, everyone to whom God has given riches and wealth, he has also allowed him to enjoy them, take his reward, and rejoice in his labor. This is a gift of God,
A man may father a hundred children and live many years. No matter how long he lives,[fn] if he is not satisfied by good things and does not even have a proper burial, I say that a stillborn child is better off than he.
Though a stillborn child does not see the sun and is not conscious, it has more rest than he.
Better what the eyes see than wandering desire. This too is futile and a pursuit of the wind.[fn]
for like the crackling of burning thorns under the pot,
so is the laughter of the fool.
This too is futile.
In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity, consider: God has made the one as well as the other, so that no one can discover anything that will come after him.
It is good that you grasp the one and do not let the other slip from your hand. For the one who fears God will end up with both of them.
Don't pay attention[fn] to everything people say, or you may hear your servant cursing you,
In such circumstances, I saw the wicked buried. They came and went from the holy place, and they were praised[fn] in the city where they did those things. This too is futile.
Although a sinner does evil a hundred times and prolongs his life, I also know that it will go well with God-fearing people, for they are reverent before him.
There is a futility that is done on the earth: there are righteous people who get what the actions of the wicked deserve, and there are wicked people who get what the actions of the righteous deserve. I say that this too is futile.
I observed all the work of God and concluded that a person is unable to discover the work that is done under the sun. Even though a person labors hard to explore it, he cannot find it; even if a wise person claims to know it, he is unable to discover it.
Indeed, I took all this to heart and explained it all: The righteous, the wise, and their works are in God's hands. People don't know whether to expect love or hate. Everything lies ahead of them.
This is an evil in all that is done under the sun: there is one fate for everyone. In addition, the hearts of people are full of evil, and madness is in their hearts while they live; after that they go to the dead.
Their love, their hate, and their envy have already disappeared, and there is no longer a portion for them in all that is done under the sun.
Again I saw under the sun that the race is not to the swift, or the battle to the strong, or bread to the wise, or riches to the discerning, or favor to the skillful; rather, time and chance happen to all of them.
For certainly no one knows his time: like fish caught in a cruel net or like birds caught in a trap, so people are trapped in an evil time as it suddenly falls on them.
Even when the fool walks along the road, his heart lacks sense,
and he shows everyone he is a fool.
Do not curse the king even in your thoughts,
and do not curse a rich person even in your bedroom,
for a bird of the sky may carry the message,
and a winged creature may report the matter.
Give a portion to seven or even to eight,
for you don't know what disaster may happen on earth.
Also, they are afraid of heights and dangers on the road;
the almond tree blossoms,
the grasshopper loses its spring,[fn]
and the caper berry has no effect;
for the mere mortal is headed to his eternal home,
and mourners will walk around in the street;
If only I could treat you like my brother,[fn]
one who nursed at my mother's breasts,
I would find you in public and kiss you,
and no one would scorn me.
These dogs have fierce appetites;
they never have enough.
And they are shepherds
who have no discernment;
all of them turn to their own way,
every last one for his own profit.
Jerusalem has sinned grievously;
therefore, she has become an object of scorn.[fn]
All who honored her now despise her,
for they have seen her nakedness.
She herself groans and turns away.
Zion's gates have fallen to the ground;
he has destroyed and shattered the bars on her gates.
Her king and her leaders live among the nations,
instruction[fn] is no more,
and even her prophets receive
no vision from the LORD.
Even jackals offer their breasts
to nurse their young,
but my dear people have become cruel
like ostriches in the wilderness.
“Stay away! Unclean! ” people shouted at them.
“Away, away! Don't touch us! ”
So they wandered aimlessly.
It was said among the nations,
“They can stay here no longer.”
So rejoice and be glad, Daughter Edom,
you resident of the land of Uz!
Yet the cup will pass to you as well;
you will get drunk and expose yourself.
“He will take even their gods captive to Egypt, with their metal images and their precious articles of silver and gold. For some years he will stay away from the king of the North,
“This is what the LORD of Armies says: If you walk in my ways and keep my mandates, you will both rule my house and take care of my courts; I will also grant you access among these who are standing here.
Then Absalom said, “Summon Hushai the Archite also. Let's hear what he has to say as well.”
“Then, even a brave man with the heart of a lion will lose heart[fn] because all Israel knows that your father and the valiant men with him are warriors.
“Then we will attack David wherever we find him, and we will descend on him like dew on the ground. Not even one will be left — neither he nor any of the men with him.
the watchman saw another man running. He called out to the gatekeeper, “Look! Another man is running alone! ”
“This one is also bringing good news,” said the king.
Mephibosheth said to the king, “Instead, since my lord the king has come to his palace safely, let Ziba take it all! ”
At Gath there was still another battle. A huge man was there with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot — twenty-four in all. He, too, was descended from the giant.
I applied my mind to know wisdom and knowledge, madness and folly; I learned that this too is a pursuit of the wind.
