Early in the morning Jacob took the stone that was near his head and set it up as a marker. He poured oil on top of it

The shepherds would roll the stone from the opening of the well and water the sheep when all the flocks[fn] were gathered there. Then they would return the stone to its place over the well's opening.

They will support you with their hands

so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.

The stone that the builders rejected

has become the cornerstone.

“My fruit is better than solid gold,

and my harvest than pure silver.

Giving honor to a fool

is like binding a stone in a sling.

The one who digs a pit will fall into it,

and whoever rolls a stone —

it will come back on him.

Therefore the Lord GOD said:

“Look, I have laid a stone in Zion,

a tested stone,

a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation;

the one who believes will be unshakable.[fn]

“Poor Jerusalem, storm-tossed, and not comforted,

I will set your stones in black mortar,[fn]

and lay your foundations in lapis lazuli.

“Indifferent to[fn] her prostitution, she defiled the land and committed adultery with stones and trees.

No one will be able to retrieve a cornerstone

or a foundation stone from you,

because you will become desolate forever.

This is the LORD's declaration.

“When you have finished reading this scroll, tie a stone to it and throw it into the middle of the Euphrates River.

They smothered my life in[fn] a pit

and threw stones on me.

“You were in Eden, the garden of God.

Every kind of precious stone covered you:

carnelian, topaz, and diamond,[fn]

beryl, onyx, and jasper,

lapis lazuli, turquoise[fn] and emerald.[fn]

Your mountings and settings were crafted in gold;

“This is Wickedness,” he said. He shoved her down into the basket and pushed the lead weight over its opening.

“On that day I will make Jerusalem a heavy stone for all the peoples; all who try to lift it will injure themselves severely when all the nations of the earth gather against her.
